To the Cromwell CommunityThe catch phrase “When the Jacarandas bloom, examinations loom” has been with University of Queensland students for decades. As I write, the Jacarandas are indeed in full bloom, Cromwell is in exam mode, and I wish all students well. What I have found so impressive about those who call Cromwell their second home, is their mature striking of balance and moderation across many facets of College life. Cromwell students know how to work hard, alongside many cultural, spiritual, social, and sporting opportunities. It has been a busy but very productive year.

Dean of StudentsLate in 2009, before I commenced as Principal, Rev. Dr Hugh Begbie explained to me that although Mr Denis Brosnan had been the Dean of Students, he was not going to continue in 2010. Hugh went on to say that as I was coming in new, he did not feel it appropriate that he appoint a permanent Dean, rather that I should do this when I got here and worked out what I wanted to do with the role. In the interim, Hugh asked Dr Dale Mason to assume the role as Dale was already in the College as Senior Tutor. Over the past five months, I have reviewed the Dean’s role and have subsequently advertised nationally for a permanent Dean of Students.

As from this month, the Dean of Students is Mr Nathan Croft. Mr Croft, at 35 years of age, brings youth, enthusiasm, drive and

COAT OF ARMSWhen the College was able to adopt its arms, it secured permission from the head of the Cromwell family to bear Oliver Cromwell’s personal arms, a lion argent rampant on a field of sable.

MOTTOVBI SPIRITUS IBI LIBERTAS - This motto comes from the Latin Version of the Second Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, Ch 3, Verse 17. “Now the Lord is Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Cromwell College SongCromwell is the greatest College,

Proved by every kind of test;

Seeking for the highest knowledge,

Aiming always for the best.

Generous when we have the victory,

Gracious if we know defeat,

This is Cromwells firm tradition;

Freeing Spirit, our heartbeat!

God’s own Spirit brings us freedom

Is the Mottos we profess;

It provides us inspiration,

Gives us strength in times of stress.

Hail or shine we stick together,

Whether near or far apart;

Ever caring, true and loyal,

We bear Cromwell in out heat.

The song is sung to the music of “Hymn to Joy”

(92 in the Australian Hymn Book).

commitment to this restructured role. He is seeking to advance his career to senior management level and is currently a highly successful middle manager within the schools sector. Mr Croft brings significant experience in residential work at Knox Grammar School (Sydney), along with experience in skillfully and apolitically managing large groups of diverse people in complex organisations. He is totally committed to assisting young adults to reach their potential.

Dean of Students Mr Nathan Croft

In addition to his significant management, interpersonal skills and ability to genuinely connect with young adults on their terms, Mr Croft is in his own right, an accomplished sportsman, primarily in Rugby and Triathlons. He was the coach of the NSW U17 Rugby Union team for five years. Mr Croft also has wide interests in cultural pursuits and plays the guitar. He will be fully involved and supportive across all College activities. He is married to Jo, with a son, Kai who is four. The Croft family, currently living in Campus Lodge, will make Steele Craik Lodge (upper) their new home once renovations are completed. They are looking forward to embracing all aspects of Cromwell life with the students.

Building ProgramThe new building is progressing well and it is on track to be completed by Orientation Week 2011. This will be

COCA News 2010 • Page 3

a very tight finish. The building design comprises three levels of corridors with four, four bedroom units along each. At the end of each corridor is a two bedroom apartment. Each of the four and two bedroom apartments have one shared bathroom and toilet area. There is a common room area at the end of each corridor. The three Resident Assistants in the new building, one per floor, will have one room in each of the two bedroom apartments. Below the accommodation floors is a large undercroft area, and below that, the new workshop. The old workshop beside Hancock, will be removed, the bike shed relocated, and additional car parking will be available where the current workshop shed stands. The tennis court will be given a facelift. Lockley, Cottage and Steel Craik Lodge (lower) will all be offered as deluxe rooms from 2011. The Lockley rooms are being refurbished in December, which will conclude the refurbishment process of student rooms that began several years ago.

This major building program has put the College into debt for the first time in many years. Although these new facilities are much needed, they do come at a financial cost. Donations to the Cromwell College Building Fund (fully tax deductible) would be greatly appreciated from those readers who feel able to do so, as donations will assist the College towards an early repayment of the loan, and thereby enable funds to be used for further developments to directly benefit the students. Donations can be made by contacting Anna East, Community Relations Manager on 07 3377 1232 or by completing the donation form on the back page, and returning to the Cromwell office.

Resident Assistants 2011The position of Senior Resident Assistant will be created in 2011. This role will serve to mentor the RA group and to provide valuable assistance to staff. I am pleased to announce that Jordan Herd (5th year 2011) has been appointed to this position. In addition, Mitchell Harwood (4th year 2011) is returning for a second year as an RA. It is encouraging to see students choosing to stay on at Cromwell beyond their late teen years.

On behalf of Jenny and myself, I would like to thank all members of the Cromwell College community for what has been a terrific year. I hope that the students have gained enormously from their experiences at Cromwell, and I wish those departing, every possible success for the future. Although Principal for only half of this year, I have come to feel that Cromwell is a very special place where life long friendships begin and are nurtured. I look forward to serving the Cromwell community again in 2011 and beyond. Jenny and I thank you all for your support and we both wish everyone a happy festive season and a prosperous new year.

Report from the Student PresidentWith the academic year almost over, Cromwell has been involved in a plethora of sporting, cultural and social events. Whether it is on the sporting field or on stage, Cromwell has continued to dominate the competition.

‘Crommie Tikker’ continued to pump through students’ veins for the last ICC showdown; Dancefest. With special thanks to Nathan Flett, Michael Krisanski and Caitin Vizcay-Wilson’s contribution to the choreography, the girls and guys hard work paid off, with Cromwell scoring 2nd place. On the social front, ball season has sadly come to an end. Students enjoyed a night of fine dining and attire at the Rydges in Southbank. The jazz band over dinner and breath taking views of the city were a big hit by all. It was the perfect way to end the 2010 social events that have been meticulously planned and executed by our Social Convenors, Jacob Landers and Nicholas Brook.

With the girls exceeding in AFL, they placed second in the overall ICC, unwavering support from Cromwellians saw the boys placed fourth and the girls placed sixth in the recent Athletics Carnival, that was held on September 11. Celebrations continued into the term as our men and women placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the Table Tennis competition and our male badminton team aimed high achieving a 2nd place. Without a doubt the greatest achievement for Cromwell was in receiving the coveted Weighted Men’s Shield! Much fun was had planning the 2010 Sportsman’s Dinner that was held on October 21. Hayley Canton was awarded the Spirit of Sports Award, alongside Daniel Beatty and Courtney Pointon who were named Cromwell’s sportsman and woman of the year.

In summary 2010 has been a blast. The unity and friendship that is shared by all the students reflect the great sense of spirit and community that exists in Cromwell. The year’s events would not have been so successful had it not been for the time and effort put in by our leaders and convenors. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside the Principal, other Exec members and the team of RAs. I wish the very best for the leaders of 2011, may they continue to contribute to the best college on campus.

2010 Australian Transplant GamesMontague Summers, Cromwell College third year student, Resident Assistant and Vice-President of the Cromwell Student Association approached Cromwell for assistance to attend the 2010 Australian Transplant Games held in Canberra from 6-10th October.

Attending and competing at the Transplant Games this year, was a way for Monty to finally run the race that he missed back in 2006 due to his diagnosis of and treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He dedicated his training and attendance at the games to his father, Charles Summers. Mr Summers had recently been hospitalised from a stroke and is now on a very long road to recovery.

Within the immediate Cromwell Community of staff and residents, more than $1000 was raised in just two weeks! This financial support provided Monty with the opportunity to participate at the Games in various track events including 400m, 800m, 1500m and the 4 x 400m relay.

Monty excelled, winning gold in all his events and smashing the world record times for the 400m, 800m, 1500m and the 4 x 400m relay (this one by 46 seconds!). Monty was also called on to race in the 4 x 100m relay in which they won gold!

Monty’s outstanding performance has secured his place to represent Australia at the 2011 World Transplant Games, to be held in Göteborg, Sweden from 17-24 June 2011. To assist in the costs associated with Monty’s upcoming trip to Sweden, please contact Monty direct by emailing [email protected] and pledge your support.

For more information about the 2011 Transplant Games, please visit www.wtg2011.com.

Chartered Accountants Student ChallengeEach year Chartered Accountants hold an Australia-wide finance/accounting competition for university students, The Chartered Accountants Student Challenge.

Cromwell resident, Colin Finke (B.Commerce/B.Laws) and his partner Amrith Dharmawardane (B.Commerce/B.Engineering) placed first in the State in the First Year Challenge, opened to first year undergraduate business, commerce and finance students.

The challenge involved examining a real-life business issue facing a corporation. Entries were judged on how effectively students approached the issue on three main criteria - technical knowledge, innovation and presentation.

2010 Cromwell College Academic Dinner

The 2010 Cromwell College Academic Dinner was held on Tuesday 24th August at the College.

Special guest speaker on the evening was Fred D’Agostino, Professor of Humanities and Associate Dean (Academic) Faculty of Arts, University of Queensland. A renowned philosopher and published author, Professor D’Agostino’s address presented the collegiality side of residence in College, drawing from his own experience as a former College resident himself, and his recent research on how to organise ourselves to be more effective in a group setting rather than how we might be as isolated individuals. His presentation was enlightening, relevant and very well received by over 200 Cromwell residents.

Cromwell, was pleased to announce the 2010 Academic Award winners recognising and honoring those students who, through diligence and hard work, have achieved noteworthy Academic results.

Cromwell wishes you all the very best for your future. Please keep in touch with us to let us know how you are going and what you get up to!

The following Special awards were also announced recognising outstanding contribution from Cromwell College residents.

Frederick North Memorial PrizeThe North Prize is given each year to encourage those with Faith – and to remind the whole community that the deep spiritual questions in life, and the person of Jesus should not be ignored; and that this was at the foundation of what Cromwell College stood for 60 years ago, stands for now in 2010 and will continue to be committed to in years to come.

This prize was awarded to Daniel Porep, a first year resident, who exemplifies the foundation commitment in his own deeply held Christian beliefs and demonstrated practice within the Christian Fellowship Group.

NC Duong Memorial PrizeThis prize is named in honour of a former Cromwell student ‘Mike’ Duong. It is to recognise residents who have made a notable contribution in highlighting awareness of wider society issues, and through their own dedicated participation, promote an understanding of those causes to others. The 2010 NC Duong Memorial prize was awarded to two worthy residents;

Victoria Flannery was the State Campaign Manager for the joint initiative of The Oaktree Foundation and the Global Poverty Project, ‘Live Below the Line’, aiming to empower young people around Australia and educate them about global poverty.

With Victoria’s involvement, they were able to raise awareness of the enormity of this international issue, reminding us all that over 1.4 billion people world-wide live below the poverty line. Over $1,500,000 was raised nationally for this campaign, with a substantial amount going to three Cambodian Schools.

COCA News 2010 • Page 13

Montague Summers, whose untiring energy and his drive in raising both awareness and funds, across a number of causes, has shown that he has exceeded his charity portfolio of projects aimed to engage and involve Cromwellians in fundraising ventures.

Notably, Montague organised the ‘Day of Days’ Touch Carnival at UQ, and encourgaged the Cromwell Community to take part in the annual Bridge to Brisbane with profits from both going to the AEIOU Foundation, an organisation supporting children with autism.

Montague also organised a ‘State of Origin’ event raising awareness and funds to help people beat depression, together with participation in the World’s Greatest Shave, raising over $3000 within the College community.

The Cromwell College MedalThe College Medal provides an opportunity to remind residents that Cromwell has a purpose. The College was established to provide an environment for young people, supportive of their university studies, and preparation for the transition into the world grounded in a vision informed and empowered by the Christian Faith.

The 2010 recipient, Jordan Herd, above everything is a Christian. He is a serious student of the Bible and a Christian witness who lives according to his Faith. In terms of personal characteristics, he is socially a most unselfish person, and one of those people who command respect simply by his consistent unselfishness combined with unfailing humility. As a Resident Assistant in 2010, Jordan has proven to be reliable and dutiful, providing outstanding pastoral care for younger students, leading through personal example.

Academically he has achieved a consistently high credit standing in a dual Degree in Commerce and Economics and has been a very capable and conscientious Tutor within the College Academic Program.

As a consistent and regular supporter of cultural activities, Jordan has always been there for others, to encourage and to extol their efforts.

Jordan is a true Cromwellian and wears the title as a badge of honour.

Congratulations to our award winners.

Cromwell was a very important part of my life during some of my most formative years, so I have a very fond affiliation to the place. Hugh Begbie was only a relatively new principal during my time there and both he and Helen were wonderfully supportive of me as a student.

Congratulations on your appointment of Principal at the college. I offer you and Jenny my most sincere wishes for the best in your new role.

Debra Horsten1984 - 1985

Debra was a student at Cromwell College in 1984 and 1985 (the first 2 years of her MBBS). Now living in the Northern Territory, Debra is unlikely to attend any get-togethers but would be interested in hearing what is happening and being in contact with previous students.

Sharon Grunwald 1982 - 1984

Currently living in NSW with her son Nicholas, born in 2001, Sharon is a management consultant focusing on change management / program delivery. Sharon’s memories of Cromwell include playing hockey in the area down the stairs from the dining area, at homes and balls, pranks - starting from days as a fresher and crashing off her bike going down anatomy hill!

Lorna Patricia LauwI should like to say “Thank You”, to all concerned with the 60th Anniversary Service and Lunch, especially the catering staff for a very healthy and delicious lunch.

We, my family, daughters fellow college residents and self, enjoyed the nostalgic journey via photographs and the tour around the complex. My family, Hong-Sian Lauw, Benjamin Dingle his partner Bronwyn and self all agreed that the day was a resounding success.

I wondered how many other families were represented by three generations? After all, if it wasn’t for Cromwell, I wouldn’t have a family.

Chit Chat Round Up

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. “I want to repay you,” said the nobleman. “You saved my son’s life.” “No, I can’t accept payment for what I did,” the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer.

At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door of the family hovel. “Is that your son?” the nobleman asked. “Yes,” the farmer replied proudly. “I’ll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he’ll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.” And that he did.

Farmer Fleming’s son attended the very best schools and in time, he graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin.

Years afterward, the same nobleman’s son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill.

His son’s name? Sir Winston Churchill.
