As we put the final touches on the October issue, the Coatings

World team is also busy making the final preparations to at-

tend CHINACOAT2015 November 18-20 at the Shanghai New

International Expo Center (SNIEC). This issue has several features dedi-

cated to the Chinese paint and coatings market.

Chinas EconomyContributing writer, Dan Watson examines the current state of the Chinese

economy in his article China A Maturing Economy. According to Watson

the emergence of China into the global market has been a remarkable trans-

formation of their society. Their continued double digit growth over the past

few decades has been the envy of the world. This is especially true since theyhave managed to keep internal inflation rates at very low levels. He con-

cludes by stating, Dont expect to see a mass exit of foreign investors from

China because of their economic slowing. Businesses and countries have all

become part of the future of China. China is still regarded by a number of

economists as an opportunity even though they may be approaching what

some regard as a maturing position.

Powder Coatings Market in ChinaChina correspondent Arnold Wangs article, Foreign Powder Coatings

Producers Slowing New Investments in China, takes a close look at the

powder coatings market in China. According to Wang, the powder coat-

ings market in China is still very fragmented and composed mainly of theproducts of domestic small- and middle-sized powder coatings producers.

But the high-end segment of the local powder coatings is still represented

by the products of foreign companies, such as DuPont, AkzoNobel, Nippon

    Paint, Tiger and PPG.

AkzoNobel to Invest inPerformance Coatings Activities in Vietnam

    AkzoNobel has announced plans to

    invest in its Performance Coatings

business in Vietnam. As well as

doubling capacity at its powder coatings

facility in Dong Nai, the company also in-

tends to open a new office for Performance

Coatings in Ho Chi Minh City.

The new production line in Dong Nai

will be ready in November and will be

supported by a 20 percent increase in

workforce. In addition to serving the lo-

cal market, the expanded plant will alsosupply customers across Southeast Asia,

    India, Australia and New Zealand.

Vietnam has proven to be strate-

gic market for AkzoNobel in Southeast

Asia and we are strongly committed

to expanding our position, said Alan

    Alex, business manager for AkzoNobels

    Powder Coatings business in Southern

Asia. With focused investment, we aim

to sustain our high double-digit growth

in the domestic market in Vietnam, as

well as Southern Asia overall.Commenting on the investment,

    Conrad Keijzer, AkzoNobels Executive

    Committee member responsible for

    Performance Coatings, added: Vietnam

is strongly emerging as a manufacturing

base in Asia, which continues to be an at-

    tractive growth market. These investments

ensure that we are well positioned to meet

    customer demand going forward.

AkzoNobel is the largest paints and

coatings company in Vietnam, with four

manufacturing locations producing bothdecorative paints and performance coat-

ings, and employing more than 800 people.

PPG Completes ColorfulCommunities Project inCieszyn, PolandPPG Industries has announced the

    completion of a Colorful Communities

    charitable-giving project near its paint-

    manufacturing plant in Cieszyn, Poland.

Mayor Ryszard Macura of Cieszyn and

Waldemar Goebiewski, director of thePPG plant, recently reopened a childrens

playground in the Park pod Waka after

    renovation, expansion and painting was

completed as part of PPGs global Colorful

    Communities initiative. Launched earlier

this year, the program expands PPGs cur-

rent investment in communities by com-

mitting $10 million over 10 years.

The playground, which was in need of

    restoration, is an important community

    resource offering residents of Cieszyn

and the surrounding area a place where

families can spend time outdoors. PPGdonated more than $14,000, along with

DEKORAL brand paints, to help reno-

vate and expand the playground with a

new swing set, carousel and safety mats.

    Nearly 30 volunteers, including employ-

ees from the PPG Polifarb Cieszyn facility

and their families, used the Dekoral prod-

    ucts to restore playground equipment

    and brighten the area.

PPG is committed to supporting the

communities where it has a presence and

beautifying important community resourc-es near our facilities, Goebiewski said.

Safety is also a priority of our company,

and we decided to extend the project by

constructing features that also help in-

crease the safety of the playground.

    Launched in May, PPGs Colorful

    Communities initiative aims to enhance,

    protect and beautify neighborhoods

    where the company operates. Together

with community partners and PPG em-

    ployee volunteers, the program supports

    projects that transform community assets

using donated PPG paint and coatings

products. Examples of other ColorfulCommunities projects have included a

    school classroom makeover, conservation

of a historical monument in a city center,

and painting over graffiti in important

    community spaces.

    The Colorful Communities program

is currently engaged with a number of

    communities and expects to complete

more than 14 projects in 2015 in North

    America, South America, Europe and

Asia. PPG has completed four other

Colorful Communities projects to date:one in the United States, one in Italy, one

in South Korea and one in China. CW

    Paint

PPG Industries recently held its first

    Colorful Communities activ-

ity in China at the Tianjin TEDA

Art Center. As part of the companys

    new global community-engagement

    initiative, nearly 70 volunteers from

    PPGs Tianjin plant helped decorate

interior walls and paint bright murals

    in the soon-to-open Color Classroom

of the art center. PPG also donated the

MASTERS MARK paint to the center

before the activity. As a responsible corporate citizen,

PPG is committed to supporting the

communities where it has a presence,

said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager,

    corporate and government affairs, Asia

    Pacific. By partnering with community

organizations such as the Tianjin TEDA

Art Center, PPG hopes to beautify and re-

vitalize community assets with our prod-

    ucts and our people.

On the morning of Sept. 12, PPG em-

ployees and their families, led by pro-fessional artists, volunteered to paint

decorative pictures on the walls of the art

    centers Color Classroom using Masters

Mark interior paints by PPG. The chil-

dren from the team also created a 5-me-

    ter-long picture entitled Colorful TEDA

and presented it to the Tianjin TEDA Art

Center as a gift, and volunteers assisted in

painting a mural to decorate the lobby of

    the art center.

We all had a fruitful day, said Kevin

Ni, PPG operations director for industrialcoatings in Asia Pacific. I would like to

thank our employees and their families

for volunteering to participate in this

    community-engagement activity. We look

forward to continuing to partner with

    organizations in neighboring communi-

ties to create brighter and more colorful

    environments.

In addition to PPGs global commu-

    nity-engagement efforts, the Colorful

    Communities program aims to en-

hance, protect and beautify the neigh-borhoods where PPG operates by

    donating coatings products, accompa-

nied by employee volunteerism, in sup-

    port of community-renewal projects.

The Tianjin TEDA Art Center, set to

open at the end of September, will be an

important place for TEDA culture and

art communication as well as an arts

training base for children in the com-munity. PPG has completed four other

    Colorful Communities projects to date:

one in the United States, two in Europe

and one in South Korea. The com-

pany expects to complete more than

    14 Colorful Communities projects this

year in North America, South America,

    Europe and Asia.

    The Colorful Communities program

is PPGs signature initiative for its com-

    munity engagement efforts. In 2014,

PPG and the PPG Industries Foundationdonated more than $5.7 million to

    hundreds of community organizations

across 24 countries around the world.

    These investments focused on: educa-

tion programs that teach young people

skills needed to succeed in studies and

    careers related to science, technology,

engineering and math, such as jobs in

    advanced manufacturing; revitalization

    programs for buildings and community

    spaces; and organizations important to

employees through grant and matching-funds programs.

Axalta IntroducingSustainability-BoostingCoating Technologies toChina Car MakersAxalta Coating Systems will showcase

    its Harmonized Coating Technologies, a

consolidated coating system, in China at

the SURCAR 2015 automotive body fin-

    ishing show in Shanghai.

Combining latest generation water-borne coatings with established high

    solid coatings, Axaltas Harmonized

Coating Technologies aim to meet the

emerging needs of light vehicle original

    equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to

achieve more sustainable and efficient car

    manufacturing.

At SURCAR Shanghai, Axalta will de-

but two new application systems for cus-

tomers in China under the Harmonized

    Coating Technologies umbrella: an up-

graded 3-Wet Waterborne system andHigh Solid 2-Wet Monocoat system. Each

    system responds to different customer

    needs for high-performance, quality and

flexibility. The systems share the ability

to reduce the number of bake/flash steps

needed for curing and are designed to

    deliver full-layer performance. As part

of the portfolio of Harmonized Coating

Technologies, the patented and patent-pending Eco-Concept primer-less coating

system is also presented at Axaltas booth,

representing one of the most advanced

    waterborne coating processes today.

Sustainability is at the core of

    Axaltas innovation and business devel-

opment, and sustainability is a key value

we share with customers, said Luke Lu,

Vice President of Axalta and President

of Axaltas operations in China. At

    Axalta, we believe Harmonized Coating

Technologies are a concrete example ofhow we are putting that philosophy into

practice to provide tangible benefits to

    customers here in China.

    Axaltas Eco-Concept process is de-

signed to reduce OEM investments and

operation expenses up to 20 percent

    when compared to conventional wa-

    ter-borne coating processes while also

lowering energy use and emissions. It is

    especially suitable for waterborne coat-

ing production lines and in shifting from

medium-solid solventborne productionlines to waterborne coating lines.

    The upgraded 3-Wet Waterborne

    system uses a specially developed

    water-based coating formulation that

enables successive coats to be applied on

top of prior coats while still wet or re-

quiring only an ambient (minimal flash)

dry step between coats. The process is

designed to further reduce the bake stepsand save energy.

The 2-Wet Monocoat system is de-

    signed to increase productivity with

reduced energy use and paint shop foot-

print. It combines the paint performance

    of a clearcoat-over-basecoat system with

the productivity of a monocoat process.

    With this advanced technology, coating

applications can be reduced from three to

two and the number of baking steps from

two to one. The monocoat appearance is

achieved with a hyper-branched acrylicpolymer formulated to provide high qual-

    ity appearance and durability. Advanced

    weathering tests conducted by Axalta

have shown that paint applied with this

2-wet technology retains as much as 90

percent of its gloss after four years.

Axalta has been operating in China

since 1984, and this experience enables

Axalta to maintain its leadership role in

    developing innovative, cutting-edge coat-

ing products. In addition to the recent-

ly-opened Jiading waterborne coatingsfacility, Axalta operates an adjacent plant

in Jiading, a plant in Changchun, six pow-

    der coating operations in collaboration

    Sika Opens Fourth

Production Site in RussiaSika is continuing to increase its produc-tion capacity in Russia through new and

    expansion investments. In Volgograd, in

southern Russia, a mortar factory and

a plant to produce concrete admixtures

are being opened. At the existing site in

Lobnya, 30 km north of Moscow, a new

    production facility, which will manufac-

    ture polymers for concrete admixtures,

is coming on stream. The investments

are aimed at strengthening Sikas posi-

tion as a market leader in Russia forconcrete admixtures.

Over the past three years Sika has

increased sales considerably in its target

markets in Russia, thus growing faster

than the market as a whole. In order to

cope with high demand and further in-

crease its market share, Sika is investing

in expanding its production capacity in

Russia, where it already has three plants

in St. Petersburg, Rzhev and Lobnya.

The existing plants will supply the

north-west of the country and centralRussia, while the plant in Volgograd will

supply product technology to the con-

struction industry in southern Russia. As

a result, transport times and costs for cus-

    tomers will be optimized.

    Paul Schuler, Sika Regional Manager

    EMEA, said: Despite cautious forecasts

for 2015, Sika is confident that there is

    long-term potential in Russias infrastruc-

    ture and industrial construction sectors.

The new production facilities will con-

tribute greatly to improving our coststructure in Russia, as transport costs

and import duties will be eliminated. This

means that Sika is very well positioned to

    consolidate its long-term market leader-

ship, in particular for concrete admix-

tures, and to gain further market share.

    priority through a five-year, $10 mil-

    lion wetlands conservation program

    with Ducks Unlimited.

We are excited and grateful to have

Axalta as DUs newest corporate partner,

said Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall. With their generous support, we can con-

tinue our goal to Rescue Our Wetlands.

Axalta and DU will both benefit

    from projects that conserve wetlands

    and natural resources, said Axalta

    Chairman and CEO Charlie Shaver.

Axalta is committed to engage in sus-

    tainable manufacturing and practices,

    and to provide environmentally respon-

    sible products and application systems

to our customers around the world,

including expanding the availability ofwaterborne coatings. With sustainability

and conservation at the forefront of our

business, we look forward to doing great

    work with Ducks Unlimited.

Axaltas colorful coatings can be seen

on cars and commercial vehicles ranging

from trucks and buses to ATVs and con-

    struction equipment, protecting against

corrosion, adding years to vehicle life

    and conserving resources. Sophisticated

engineering is used to produce coatings

in sustainable ways and also enablesAxaltas customers to save energy and re-

    duce CO2 and VOC emissions.

Coatings are found in less obvi-

ous places as well, helping to sustain

product life cycles. Coatings protect oil

    pipelines from corrosive underground

    environments. Building facades, lawn

    furniture and playground equipment

rely on coatings to protect them from

    harsh climates. Electric generators run

    more efficiently when coatings insulate

them from high temperatures. Now Axalta is helping to protect and

sustain North Americas wetlands as well.

    DU Chief Conservation Officer

Paul Schmidt said the partnership with

Axalta fits seamlessly with DUs Rescue

Our Wetlands campaign. We will start

with priority wetland projects under the

umbrella of the Rescue Our Wetlands

    campaign, focusing specifically on the

Gulf Coast and Great Lakes Initiatives,

he said. Our biologists and engineers

will deliver crucial restoration work inthese important breeding, migration,

and wintering areas which are near

some of Axaltas major U.S. manufac-

    turing facilities.

    Waterfowl wintering on the Gulf

Coast will also benefit from Axaltas

support. Through this partnership, morethan 15,000 acres of threatened coastal

prairie wetlands and marshes will be

targeted by DU for restoration, enhance-

    ment and maintenance.

    Helping sustain natural resources is

critical to Ducks Unlimited, Axalta and

the people we touch, said DU Chief

    Fundraising Officer Amy Batson. We

see this partnership growing and devel-

oping into a significant force for conti-

    nental conservation.

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business Trendsin 3Q15 vs. 3Q14

Each month, North Coast Research surveys a large sample of

paint retailers throughout the United States to get a sense for cur-

rent business trends. Please note that of the three primary archi-

tectural coatings channels (paint stores, home centers, and retail

distributors), this survey is primarily reflective of the distributor

    channel which tends to see volume growth less than the industry;

therefore, we view the results as a directional indicator more so

than absolute industry volumes. For inquiries regarding this report

please contact Kevin Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or [email protected].

    Architectural Coatings Sales

    Volumes Up 1.4% in 3Q15 vs. 3Q14

According to industry participants, average volumes increased

1.4% in 3Q15 compared to 3Q14. This represents a slight se-

quential moderation from our 2Q15 results and compares to vol-

    ume growth of 2.8% in 2Q15, 1.1% in 1Q15, and 1.6% in 4Q14.

We had anticipated pent up demand from lost painting days

in 1H15 to be made up in 3Q15 causing volumes to acceler-

ate, however this did not happen. With that said, the industry

is still experiencing year-over-year growth. We are encouragedwith the positive trends that have persisted through 3Q15 as

paint volumes continue to grow on a year-over-year basis and

we expect 2015 to be a solid year. Overall, 63% of respondents

witnessed an increase in paint volumes vs. only 17% that saw

volumes decline, averaging out to 1.4% year-over-year volume

growth and a net increase of 46%.

    Price of Paint from Suppliers

3Q15 Paint Prices Remain Positively Skewed

40% of contacts noted paint prices were higher in 3Q15 vs.

3Q14 as our paint price index rose 1.0% compared to average

increases of 0.5%-1.0% over the past year. Our research sug-gests that a little bit of price is sticking in the industry but only in

the independent dealer channel which is small in size and likely

in the low-single digit range. We currently do not believe the

store or big-box channels are realizing pricing; however, given

the raw material declines, we view the overall price/raws for

coatings manufacturers as favorable. We believe that we picked

up potential price increases in our 4Q14 survey where a mean-

ingful uptick in contacts were notified of a price increase from

manufacturers to take place in 2015. The majority or contacts

believed these attempts would be successful and we believe the

data we have discovered thus far in 2015 suggests that some de-

gree of pricing did in fact stick in the marketplace. Overall, 40%

of respondents witnessed an uptick in pricing vs. only 3% that

saw pricing decline, averaging out to a 1.0% increase in year-

over-year pricing with afnet increase of 37%.

    Raw Materials

Raw Materials Cant Seem to Find a Bottom

We continue to believe coatings manufacturers are poised to

benefit from favorable price/raws in 2015 due to the drop in ti-

tanium dioxide (TiO2) and raw materials derived from crude oil.

Propylene, of which many coatings based raws are derived, has

continued to decline and is averaging about $0.345/lb in 3Q15

which is down ~18% from 2Q15 and ~50% from 3Q14 levels

which averaged $0.681/lb. TiO2 started to drop in 4Q14 and has

seen further declines throughout 2015 and is likely down 15%+

year-over-year. Unfortunately, coatings manufacturers have notseen the level of raw material benefits we were anticipating

throughout 2015 as most of the major coatings players have in-

dicated the raw material basket is down only low-single digits in

1H15, however this may improve in 2H15 .

    3-Month Outlook

Outlooks Solid as We Enter the Fall Season

Our proprietary Coatings 3-Month Outlook Index reached 0.51

in 3Q15, which is a slight sequential moderation from our 2Q15

survey. Moving backwards, the 0.51 mark in 3Q15 compares to

0.84 in 2Q15 and a reading of 0.57 in 3Q14. The highest pos-

sible reading is +2 (indicating all contacts have a very positiveoutlook) and the lowest possible reading is -2 (indicating all con-

tacts have a very negative outlook). We believe this represents

healthy growth as our index tends to temper from 2Q into 3Q as

we enter the fall but is showing normal seasonality and healthy

    outlooks.

rior paint category and being Cradle to

Cradle Certified Silver earlier this year,

making Natura the most decorated paint

    by Benjamin Moore.

    Asthma and allergies affect more

than 370 million people worldwide, with 70 million in the United States

    alone. In 2006, AAFA collaborated

    with Allergy Standards Limited (ASL),

    an international physician-led certifica-

tion company, to establish a scientific

program to vet and identify consumer

products that are more suitable for peo-

    ple with asthma and allergies.

This is the latest step in our long

    history and commitment to manufactur-

ing green paints that are safer for your

family and the environment, said ChrisConnelly, director of brand management,

    Benjamin Moore. With zero emissions

and no harsh fumes, Natura truly is an

eco-friendly paint that delivers on perfor-

    mance and color integrity.

    The asthma & allergy friendlyTM

PPG Aerospace QualifiesBasecoat-Clearcoat ExteriorTopcoat Systems at AirbusBasecoat-clearcoat exterior topcoat sys-

tems by PPG Industries aerospace coat-

ings group have been qualified at Airbus

    that offer appearance, production, oper-

ating and maintenance benefits.High-solids DESOTHANE HD/

    CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat has been

qualified for application as a topcoat

system as well as with chromate-free

    DESOPRIME CF/CA 7049 primer that

Airbus has long used. Also qualified is

    the basecoat-clearcoat selectively strip-

    pable system with chromate-free F565

intermediate coat applied over the prim-

er that facilitates repainting without re-

    moval of the primer.

    Desothane HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat consists of a heavily pigment-

ed basecoat that provides color with

    less paint than conventional high-solids

paints and a clearcoat that extends service

life, improves buffability and achieves a

smoother, high-gloss surface that is easier

    to clean.

    PPG basecoat-clearcoat systems pro-

    vide superior aesthetics, while weight

savings improve fuel economy and the

enhanced color and gloss retention helps

reduce maintenance to benefit airlines, ac-cording to Dirk Thelen, PPG key account

director for Airbus programs and busi-

    ness manager, EMEA (Europe, Middle

    East and Africa) south region.

We worked closely with Airbus to

    demonstrate the productivity and appear-

ance advantages of the PPG basecoat-clearcoat system, Thelen said. Airbus

wanted to offer its customers advanced

    coatings technology that many airlines

already use in their own maintenance op-

erations. For airlines, having Airbus use

the same coatings system on new aircraft

that they use in maintenance is a signifi-

    cant benefit.

    In the selectively strippable coatings

    system with PPG basecoat-clearcoat,

F565 intermediate coating is applied over

the primer, and the basecoat-clearcoatand intermediate coating are easily re-

    moved during repainting, leaving the

    primer intact. Desothane HD/CA 9008

    basecoat-clearcoat and Desothane HD/

    CA 9008 ultraviolet-resistant external

    clearcoat also are qualified independently

    at Airbus.

    Desothane HD/CA 9008 basecoat-

clearcoat topcoat system used with or

    without Desoprime CF/CA 7049 prim-

er as well as the selectively strippable

basecoat-clearcoat system are qualifiedto AIMS 04-04-025, AIMS 04-04-033

    and AIMS 04-04-037. Desothane HD/CA

9008 clearcoat is qualified to AIMS 04-

    04-023 for independent application.

    Desothane HD/CA 9008 basecoat-

clearcoat is also part of a growing num-

    ber of PPG Aerospace chromate-free

    systems qualified to SAE Internationals

    Aerospace Material Specification 3095A

for airline exterior paint. Nearly 250 air-

craft have been successfully painted with

    PPG basecoat-clearcoat systems.
