A method of antiquing a pewter component comprising forming an oxide on the component by con- tacting with an oxidizing solution comprising an acid salt of copper, selenious acid, hydrochloric acid, and a surface activator; rinsing to stop the formation of the oxide; and buffing to form an antique finish.
