JEWISH EDUCATORS OF THE YE

AR

Tziporah (Tzipi ) Altman-Shafer is a Milwaukee native who graduated from Nicolet High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison before earning a Masters of Jewish Education degree from Siegal College.

Tzipi served as a family educator in Cleveland and for three years was the Director of the Bureau of Jewish Education in Chattanooga. She was also Director of Education at Congregation Beth El in Phoenix.

In Milwaukee Tzipi has provided 12 years of exemplary instruction to the children of the Milwaukee Jewish Day School. She has taught Jewish Studies, Hebrew and prayer to virtually all grades. Rainbow Day Camp and several synagogue schools have profited from her inspired efforts on behalf of Milwaukee’s Jewish children. In her spare time, Tzipi finds time for the CJL Board, Mitzvah Corp and an array of activities sponsored by Lubavitch of Wisconsin. She also finds time for her husband and three children.

Her nominator wrote: “She loves Judaism not because she must in order to authenticate her teaching; rather her teaching is an extension of her Jewish life and her love of Judaism.”

Karen Torem was born in Cincinnati and taught at the Alexander Gross School in Miami for five years. She received her Masters Degree in Jewish Education from the ground breaking distance learning Milwaukee Masters in Education Program sponsored by the Milwaukee Association for Jewish Education (MAJE).

Karen currently teaches the fifth grade girls at YES, but is most famous for teach-ing kindergarten. She taught kindergarten at Hillel Academy for ten years and at Yeshiva Elementary School for the past 25.

Mrs. Torem has had a major community-wide impact on Jewish education in Milwaukee. She has been a devoted member of the Chevra Kadisha and active as a member of many boards. Karen was Chair of the Milwaukee Association for Jewish education and helped establish CJL. For the past ten years she has served as CJL’s Professional Development Coordinator with an emphasis on giving support and leadership to the congregational school initiative.

A colleague noted that she had often witnessed “her incredible sensitivity” and “intuitiveness”. Her nominator wrote: “She has a great capacity to inspire students and make them feel like they are important and capable”. All who know her would agree that she is a role model and exemplifies an Eshet Chayil.

These are new awards introduced by the Coalition for Jewish Learning’s Educator Recognition Committee during the 2013-2014 school year. The recipients of these awards were chosen by each school.

The Teacher Impact Award is given to a teacher who has made a special impact. This is not a “best teacher” award but rather recognition of a teacher who has made special contributions in an area such as mentoring, innovating or helping others.

The School Support Award is given to a non-teacher (administrator, volunteer, high school aide) who has provided something special to their school.

The Coalition for Jewish Learning expresses its appreciation for the extraordinary support that these individuals give to Jewish education.

MILWAUKEE JEWISH DAY SCHOOL

Roberta Schaalman: Teacher Impact Award Having served MJDS for 30 years, Roberta was one of the first teachers at MJDS and helped build the school.

Kathy Stange: School Support Award As the face of MJDS for many, many years Kathy has taken care of more than 600 students in her role as receptionist, nurse, medicine dispenser, question answerer and comforter.

TORAH ACADEMY OF MILWAUKEEMrs. Lauren Anton (of blessed memory): Teacher Impact Award Mrs. Anton’s classes were not just about “covering ground” although we did learn everything that we were supposed to learn! They were about life. Real life. They were lessons that were woven with anecdotes that portrayed how to live a life of Torah and proper hashkafa perspective. As a high school student it seemed as though Mrs. Anton just enjoyed engaging us in her class and therefore told us stories, however, in retrospect, I realize that those stories carried so much meaning as they were true lessons of themselves. Mrs. Anton was a true role model for us. (TAM graduate 2000)

Trudy Farber: School Support Award Ms. Trudy Farber, a name synonymous with Torah Academy of Milwaukee, is the school’s capable, accomplished and dedicated administrator. No job is too big or too small for Ms. Farber to tackle. She ably handles the multi-faceted needs of the school, from preparing the budget and deftly running the finances, to fixing the plumbing, to lovingly tending to the headaches and stomach aches of the students. Her supreme competence has enabled the school to successfully function as a stalwart model of an efficiently run institution.

YESHIVA ELEMENTARY SCHOOLChaya Brenner: Teacher Impact AwardMrs. Chaya Brenner is our K-4 Judaic teacher, she is the foundation of our children’s education, which she does in such a creative and exciting way. Children in K-4 can be seen marching through the building following behind their beloved teacher, singing the songs that are teaching them the lessons of the day. She has such a magical effect on the young children that everyone of them loves to come to school to learn from her. We are proud to recognize her remarkable contribution to our school.

Joshua Richman: School Support AwardMr. Josh Richman is a man who is talented in so many ways. His energy and excitement about music and the art add a dimension to our school and community that could never be replicated.

Teacher Impact and School Support Awards 2014

Thank you Teachers & School Support!

YES was so excited when Mr. Richman offered the opportunity to become a partner to RUACH, not only for the opportunity it represented to our students, but also because we would have Mr. Richman involved with the programming of the program as well.

YESHIVAS Ohr Yechezkel Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study The Harri Hoffmann Family High SchoolRabbi Yitzchak Shapiro: Teacher Impact AwardRabbi Yitzchak Shapiro has been Assistant Principal and Talmud instructor for 24 years. One of the greatest deficiencies in the world of Jewish education is the dearth of super qualified educators. Much of our Jewish culture encourages the “best and the brightest” to pursue financially substantive and societally admired professions. How fortunate are the students at WITS to have a Torah scholar of such magnitude to challenge and inspire them to strive for great levels of academic achievement. Rabbi Shapiro’s classes are admired by each and every student. In a day and age when we have difficulty attracting the broader teenage community to authentic Jewish study, Rabbi Shapiro’s students actually look forward to every class. The Torah presented is so captivating that students develop a longing to be Torah scholars themselves. How fortunate that the Milwaukee community has such a Torah Scholar/Teacher in their midst.

Bruce Glaser: School Support AwardMr. Bruce Glaser has chaired the Finance committee for WITS for more than a decade. A usually low key committee took on great prominence as the Yeshiva navigated its dealing with the banks to secure our mortgage and our capital campaign bonds. The professionalism of Bruce’s efforts, the integrity of his financial oversight and the congenial manner of his presentations allowed for a very positive, supportive relationship with all our banking partners. What is so meaningful to us is that congeniality and integrity are values which we attempt to instill within our students. It is so important to the education of our students, when staff, students and our lay leaders share a common value as ordained by our Torah.

Gill Incentive For Teachers (GIFT) Award

The Gill Incentive For Teachers (GIFT) is an award designed to stimulate and encourage teachers to translate their unique educational ideas and initiatives into effective classroom projects. This award is for a project completed during the current school year in one of these areas: • school/classroom environment • teaching/learning materials • enrichment activities, including special one-time class/school projects

Roger CarpGill Incentive for Teachers (GIFT) Award

Roger Carp is proud to receive his fourth Gill Incentive For Teaching Award and thanks the students in his elective at Congregation Shalom for their outstanding work in realizing the goals of his winning project, “The Perfect Apology.” A native of Los Angeles where he was inspired by his teachers at Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Roger began teaching Judaica while pursuing his doctorate in American history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Two years

of teaching fourth grade at Judea Reform Congregation in Durham, N.C., served as the foundation for more than 20 years of teaching every grade from fifth through Confirmation at Congregation Shalom. Roger, who earned a Master’s degree in Jewish Studies from Spertus Institute in Chicago, is grateful for the support and insights provided by the directors of education and his fellow teachers at Shalom, along with the encourage-ment and recognition given by the Coalition for Jewish Learning.

Morah Torem, how can I expressThe way you made K-5 the very best? It’s so hard to list everything I remember,For there was so much we learned between June and September.

Yes, there were treats and projects so fun,But when you think back and all’s said and done,The main result was our love and joy for the TorahWhich we couldn’t have received without our dear Morah.

You labored and made sure we really were growing,With all sorts of tricks which now are really showing,That when you invest, the fruits turn out stunningL’Fum Tzara Agra, it’s now after Mitzvos we’re running.

The excitement, warmth, and chein in our direction you showered,In all sorts of activities like making a menorah and edible Bavel towers. The succah, and taivah, palace, and more,Made Yiddishkeit in the classroom not a bore.

Footprints in paint, weddings, songs, and birthdays,With hugs throughout, you reached out to us in plenty of ways.Who can attest to the time you put forth, with my K5 teachers Morah Chaya and Sammy, Mrs. Lieberman and Mrs. Borth,To make my year with you be filled with delight,As we enthusiastically learned about H-shem’s might.

Apple Holler, the farm, and Zaidy’s Esrog (shop) Store,Were all great opportunities to learn, that’s for sure. You instilled Midos tovos and helped me climb stepsKriyah, Davening, and Parsha were just the right future prep,For now out of high school I’ll soon be heading,And landing in all sorts of unfamiliar settings,And soon I’ll be having B’Ezras H-shem my own children to raise,if I didn’t have you as a role model, it would all be a maze.

My skills and knowledge have their foundations in the lessons you taught meIt’s unbelievable what superb patience you had, yes truly. The love in your lesson plans really show you have a knackFor chinuch habanim, as I fondly look back.

Thank you Morah Torem for all that you are,The award fits you just right because you’re a starAt giving young children skills and love for Yiddishkeit,H-shem should give you the Beracha that you can continue doing this for 120 years of life.
