Local Legend receives RFU Lifetime Achievement Award for Coaching Excellence

Lynn Evans or Evo as he is fondly known, is widely respected throughout the game and is one of the first coaches to receive this award, which was only instituted last year. In addition to coaching the Dark Blues between 1981 and 1995, Lynn has held posts at Littlemore, Oxford and Chinnor RFU clubs. In recent years he has spread the gospel by visiting more than 20 countries – including Malaysia and China where he has run courses for players and coaches. At present, he is a coaching advisor and mentor to the RFU and also looks after Oxford University Under 21s

John Peel, Chair of the Oxfordshire CB coaching sub-committee, said: "Lynn Evans is an inspirational coach and teacher. His knowledge and enthusiasm, love for the game and commitment to the development of children through sport has been staggering. He has inspired countless young people to play the sport all over the world”

How did you get into coaching?

I started coaching in 1962 when I joined Littlemore GS as PE teacher. I went on my first coaching course organised by the RFU in 1964 at Lilleshall. Mostly teachers in school hols.

There were no awards in those days, we just attended appropriate “in service” type courses to pick up things. We also watched some of the best coaches operating so we could pick their brains. I was (after 20 years) invited to become a Senior Coach with the RFU

and soon after I became a Staff Coach delivering the new RFU award courses.

Who inspired you?

A number of people some not in rugby like Tom McNab and Frank Dick both involved with athletics – it was clear they had great all round knowledge but also the ability to inspire whoever they were working with. They connected with whoever they worked with through their planning, enthusiasm and drive. They were also prepared to share their knowledge. The rugby coaches – two especially, Chalky White (Leicester and Midlands) who became an informal mentor who challenged, supported and provided a great vision of how to coach. And a visionary Frenchman, Pierre Villepreux who showed a coaching methodology that changed my whole outlook to coaching. He was using a game (tactical) centred approach over 30 years ago. I have spent the last 30 years working it all out! He was inspirational.

What is your Coaching Philosophy?

I suppose it is to help players take more responsibility for their own decisions within their sport. To question them, challenge them but not always tell them. Also to support all the players I coach especially the ones who need the most help to improve. We lose too many from sport from the desire to use the pyramid selection as one of our main coaching tools. We should be able to care for the enthusiast as well as the gifted. In games we should try and coach more through the medium of ‘the game’ and then the technique rather than the other way around.

What is your Top Tip?

I think the good coaches go out and find ways to make themselves the best coach they can be. Do not wait for others to keep providing the information you want. Share your knowledge! That’s two tips isn’t it……..?

Premier League coaches help develop the skills of community coaches, and now referees, all over the world; whilst a separate initiative produced learning materials based on Premier League football to help enhance people’s language skills.

The project has been breaking new ground all over the world during the past year. The first phase of Premier Skills is now complete, taking in 22 projects in 15 countries across Africa, China, India and South East Asia. New Central Venue for Netball in Oxford

The £2.1m community sports arena has been completed at Oxford City Football Club, and is already home to 1,000 sports enthusiasts.

The centre at Court Place Farm in Marston includes a full-sized artificial grass pitch, pavilion and six floodlit netball courts.

Oxford City chairman Brian Cox said: "Quite frankly, this is now the finest facility in Oxford of its type. There's nothing like it, it's entirely there for the community so anyone who wants to do any sport can come along and it's there for them”

Oxfordshire Netball Secretary Kate Hopcroft said: "The Oxfordshire League commenced matches on 9 January and we have received very positive feed-back. Netball as a team-game thrives in a multi-court environment when teams can absorb good practice and officials can be supported and mentored in a way which is more sustainable for the long- term future.

Our junior leagues will recommence the second half of their season at the new centre in February, and we look forward to developing new initiatives this year such as the Corporate League, new Back to Netball sessions, as well as MLD-Disability Netball."

The centre was funded with £900,000 from the Football Foundation, with grants from England Netball, Sport England, Oxford Sports Council and Oxford City Council. In addition local netball clubs and Oxfordshire Netball raised £90,000.

Well done to Sue Blackshaw who has been the driving force behind the concept of a Central venue for Netball.

Minimum Standards for Deployment

Criminal records regime scaled back to common sense levels

Plans are on track to restore common sense to employment vetting processes while ensuring public protection. A full response was published at the beginning of the month to a review of the criminal records regime by Sunita Mason, the government’s independent advisor on criminality information management.

The response sets out which of the recommendations from the first part of the review are now before parliament in the protection of freedoms bill. These changes will improve the proportionality and efficiency of employment vetting by overhauling the work of the criminal records bureau (CRB). The government also set out how it will respond to the second part of Mrs Mason's review, which addresses what defines a criminal record, how records are managed, and the international exchange of information.

The protection of freedoms bill contains a number of proposals aimed at making significant improvements to the processes of the CRB, including:

ensuring that only relevant and accurate personal information will ever be disclosed by the police

stopping checks on under 16s the opportunity for applicants to review and, if appropriate, dispute any information held about

them by the police prior to it being disclosed to an employer online status checks, enabling certificates to be reused for different employers across the

same sector, instead of requesting a new certificate every time they apply for a new role substantially reducing the scope of 'regulated activity' from which people can be barred.

Although Mrs Mason recommended a significant reduction in those that are eligible for checks, the government believes it is important to retain the capacity to apply for criminal records checks in relation to a broader set of sensitive roles.

Coaches Code of Practice

Coaches play a crucial role in the development of any sport and in the lives of the performers they coach. Good coaches ensure participants in sport have positive experiences and are therefore more likely to continue in their sport and achieve their potential. Coaching, as an emerging profession, must demonstrate a high degree of honesty, integrity and competence at all levels. The need for coaches to understand and act upon their responsibilities is of critical importance to sport, as is the need to protect the key concept of participation for fun and enjoyment as well as achievement. This is implicit within good coaching practice and promotes a professional image of the good practitioner. This Code of Practice defines all that is best in good coaching practice.
