The ABCA takes to the West Coast for its 64th Annual Convention as the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina and San Diego Convention Center will play host to 3,500 baseball coaches Jan. 2-5. Committee and divisional meetings, as well as exhibits, officially open the con-vention on Friday, Jan. 2.

Clinic sessions begin Saturday, Jan. 3. ABCA Second Vice-President Joe Rob-erts has arranged a great lineup of speakers including Mike Batesole, Fres-no State University; Pete Dunn, Stetson University; Danny Hall, Georgia Tech; Michael Josephson, Josephson Institute of Ethics; Mike Scioscia, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; Jerry Weinstein, Colorado Rockies; and many more of the finest baseball people in the world.

In the exhibit hall, 300 companies are expected to display state-of-the-art equipment including new coaching aids, apparel, and batting and pitch-ing machines, as well as numerous new products being displayed for the first time. Other convention highlights include the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m. and the Honors Luncheon on Sun-day, Jan. 4, at 12:15 p.m.

Mark Johnson Receives Inaugural Ethics AwardMark Johnson, Head Coach at Sam Houston State University and one of baseball’s most respected coaches and leaders, is the recipient of the inaugural ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award. The ABCA believes that the highest call-ing of a baseball coach is to teach life’s lessons and model the character traits of honesty, integrity, respect, and per-sonal responsibility, and that a coach’s moral and ethical conduct—on and off the field —deeply influences players. The ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award Committee, chaired by Tom O’Connell, believes that Coach Johnson best rep-resents these principles.

Johnson became the sixth head coach in Sam Houston State’s modern base-ball history on July 16, 2006. In his first

season at Sam Houston State, the Bear-kats had one of the three best turn-around seasons in NCAA Division I baseball in 2007. The Kat baseball team rolled up a 40-24 record, an improve-

ment of 17 victories over SHSU’s 23-31 record in 2006. The 40 victories were the most by a Sam Hous-ton State team since 1987 when the Kats won 44. The Bear-kats’ fourth place South-land Confer-ence regular

season finish earned SHSU its first SLC playoff berth since 2000 and was the team’s best league finish since 1997.

Sam Houston rolled undefeated through the 2007 Southland Confer-ence postseason tournament to earn its first Division I national playoff berth since 1996. With thrilling come-from-behind victories over Troy University and the University of Southern Missis-sippi, Sam Houston reached the NCAA regional finals for the first time in its four Division I playoff appearances. The Bearkats broke or tied 16 school records in 2007 including highest sea-son batting average (.321).

In 2008, Coach Johnson again led his squad to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Division I playoff spot. In his two years, Johnson has posted 77 victories, representing the most wins by a Bear-kat team in consecutive seasons since 1987. He now owns a collegiate coach-ing record of 953-484-3 in 23 years.

For 21 years, Johnson was Head Coach at Texas A&M University, where he directed the Aggies to two College World Series appearances and a record of 876-433-3 from 1986 to 2005. He won Southwest Conference champion-ships in 1986, 1989, and 1993 and Big

12 league titles in 1998 and 1999. His teams competed in the NCAA play-offs 13 times and reached the College World Series in 1993 and 1999.

He was Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and Southwest Confer-ence Coach of the Year in 1986, 1989, and 1993. His teams at Texas A&M were ranked no. 1 in the nation for 11 weeks in 1989, six weeks in 1993, and three times in 1999. During his time at Texas A&M, 108 players were selected in the Major League Baseball draft.

Johnson was Sporting News Nation-al Coach of the Year in 1993 and is a member of both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Texas Baseball Halls of Fame. He also served as Head Coach for Team USA in the summer of 1999.

Johnson is a graduate of the University of New Mexico, where he received his bachelor’s degree in science and physi-cal education in 1967 and his master’s degree in recreation and physical edu-cation in 1971. He earned all-confer-ence honors as a member of the Lobos’ baseball team in 1965, 1966, and 1967 and was NCAA All-Region in 1967. Johnson was inducted into the Universi-ty of New Mexico Athletic Hall of Honor during the fall of 2007.

After playing professional baseball in the Mets organization from 1967 to 1969, Johnson served as an assistant coach at New Mexico (1969-1971), the University of Arizona (1971-1976), and Mississippi State University (1976-1982) before joining Tom Chandler’s staff at Texas A&M in 1982.

At the 2004 Convention, the ABCA launched an effort to have a keynote speaker at each convention talking on coaching ethics. A home run was hit with the first such address presented by Michael Josephson, President and CEO of the Josephson Institute of Eth-ics. Since that time, the ABCA has continued to have outstanding speak-ers on this most important coaching requirement: Bruce Brown (2005 and 2006), Pat Williams (2007), and Jerry Kindall (2008).

college teams had won six conference championships, and he had received five coach of the year honors. Though the first 19 years of his college coach-ing career were at non-scholarship pro-grams, he had four players drafted, one as high as the seventh round. However, he believes his most significant accom-plishment as a college baseball coach for 35 years is that every player that played four years for him also gradu-ated from college.

Altopp’s coaching career reached its pinnacle at Lee University. His last five teams at Lee won more than 40 games each with three consecutive conference championships from 2003 to 2005. The 2005 team went 55-16, reached the NAIA World Series, and was sixth in final regular season national rankings.

During this span, Altopp earned two conference coach of the year awards and was twice named the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association NAIA Coach of the Year. His overall college coaching record was 807-786, and he is a member of four other Halls of Fame: Greenville College, Lee University, the NAIA, and the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association.

Altopp attended his first ABCA Con-vention in Houston in 1971 and could never have envisioned what his role within the organization would become. He has served on several ABCA com-mittees and spent seven years on the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association Executive Committee, including two as its President. Named the NAIA repre-sentative to the ABCA Executive Com-mittee in 1992, he moved from that position when he was elected by the ABCA membership as the 1999 Fourth Vice-President, leading to his serving as the 2003 President. He currently serves on the Board of Directors.

Altopp has traveled extensively over-seas primarily doing missions work through baseball. He is currently the National Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Baseball Minis-try. He has written numerous articles and authored one book, entitled Coach Quotes for Baseball.

Jack Dunn was the gold standard in Oregon high school and college base-ball for 39 years. He retired in 1994 after 20 straight winning seasons at Portland State University with a record of 630-439. PSU won conference cham-

Josephson will speak at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, with Johnson receiv-ing the ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award from O’Connell just prior to the presen-tation. Over 3,500 coaches will be in attendance.

The ABCA and its 6,000 coaching mem-bers congratulate Mark Johnson upon his outstanding and most deserving honor.

Hall of Fame Welcomes Seven, Plus FoundersThe American Baseball Coaches Asso-ciation welcomes seven more individu-als into its Hall of Fame this year, along with its first group induction. The 2009 inductees are David Altopp, Lee Univer-sity; Jack Dunn, Portland State Universi-ty; Larry Geracioti, Georgetown Univer-sity; Dusty Rhodes, University of North Florida; Bob Todd, The Ohio State Uni-versity; Jack Vallely, Curry College; Jerry Weinstein, Sacramento City College; and the Founding Fathers of the ABCA.

Biographies of the seven individual inductees follow. A special look at the group of coaches who formed what was then called the American Associa-tion of College Baseball Coaches is on page 11.

David Altopp spent his entire 35 years as a head college baseball coach at NAIA institutions. His longest tenure (16

years) was at his alma mater, Green-ville College, where he fol-lowed the legendary Robert “Ish” Smith, his col-lege coach, and the man most respon-sible for Altopp pursu-ing a coaching career. Follow-ing a three-

year stint at Marion College (now Indi-ana Wesleyan University) and six years at Trevecca Nazarene University, Altopp completed his final 10 years of coach-ing baseball at Lee University, where he retired after the 2006 season. Altopp began his baseball coaching career at Phoenix (Ariz.) Christian High School where he won the state Class B champi-onship in his first year.

Before arriving at Lee, where he began the baseball program from scratch dur-ing the 1996-97 school year, Altopp’s

Dunn was previously inducted into the State of Oregon Hall of Fame, Oregon High School Coaches Hall of Fame,

Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame, Cleveland High School Hall of Fame, and Portland State University Hall of Fame. He also received the Dis-tinguished Career Award from The Ore-gonian, the state’s major newspaper.

team advanced to the NCAA Regional at Arizona State University.

His two high school programs, Cleve-land and Wilson, were the class of the Portland City League for 19 years, and his American Legion summer teams were even better. He was selected State of Oregon Coach of the Year in 1973 after his team placed third in the American Legion World Series. During

Dunn also chaired the committee that organized the Oregon State High School Baseball Coaches Association, served as its President, and directed numerous baseball clinics for its membership.

Dunn writes regularly for Collegiate Baseball and Jugs Pitching Machine Monthly and has just authored a book, From the Third Base Coaches Box, in which he shares four decades of coach-ing knowledge. He continues to con-duct a Little League summer baseball camp as he has for 40 years.

Former Georgetown University Base-ball Coach Larry Geracioti, one of the nation’s winningest coaches, has enjoyed a long and successful career as an administrator and educator. “I think I’m most pleased at the end of a long career with my former players tell-ing me that they came to me as boys and left as men,” Geracioti says. “It has been a great privilege to teach young people as they progressed toward maturity. I treasure the time I have spent coaching.”

At Georgetown, Geracioti amassed 110 wins from 1986-1993, fourth most

in school history. In his first year, he helped guide the Hoyas to their sec-ond consecutive Big East Championship

appearance by going 12-6 in the confer-ence. He also managed the last GU team to finish a season above .500 as the 1986 team ended the year at 23-22.

Prior to Georgetown, Geracioti (USAF Cap-

tain, retired), a decorated World War II veteran of both the European and Pacific theaters of operations (Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters), accumulated a 245-45 record over 10 seasons at New York University, including a third-place finish at the 1969 College World Series, the same year he won NCAA District II Coach of the Year honors. While at NYU,

he was also Chairman of the Television Committee for the College World Series.

After graduating from Missouri State in 1950, Geracioti was recalled to mili-tary service during the Korean War. He began his coaching career at the Uni-versity of New Mexico in 1952, where he served as an Assistant Football Coach and Basketball Coach, as well as the Head of the Physical Training Department and an Instructor in the Health and Physical Education Depart-ment. From 1953 to 1958, he held simi-lar positions at Boston University, where he earned his master’s in education. During the 1958-59 academic year, he served as a Professor in the Physical Education Department and Intramural Director at Columbia University.

Geracioti moved to New York University in 1959 and remained there until 1974. While at NYU, he served as Assistant Director of Athletics, Chairman of the Physical Education Department, Head Football Coach, and Assistant Basket-ball Coach while establishing himself as one of the nation’s finest collegiate baseball coaches.

In 1974, Geracioti left NYU to become the Athletic Director and Chairman of the Physical Education Department at Wagner College. He remained there until 1978 when he became Director of Athletics at the University of Detroit. In 1981, he became the Director of Admin-istration at Spour, Behrins, Campbell and Young, Inc., specializing in corporate business activities and personal financial planning for sports personalities.

Geracioti’s baseball coaching career was not limited to college play, as he coached the USA Deaf National Team and the USA Native American Team and took several other teams overseas. After retiring from Georgetown, Gera-cioti continued to teach, creating a cer-tificate program in sports management and was most recently the Director of Community Relations and Youth Sports Programs for the International Bowl.

In nearly 40 years as a college coach, Dusty Rhodes has taught countless number of student-athletes how to win and get the job done. In 29 seasons as a collegiate head coach at the Univer-sity of North Florida and Palm Beach Junior College, Rhodes has compiled a 1,159-507 record.

He has guided UNF to 16 postseason appearances, including five World Series appearances, four NAIA district cham-pionships, and six conference cham-pionships in NCAA Division II. He has

also coached players to 24 All-America selections, 67 all-conference selections, and 49 all-region selec-tions.

Rhodes has been named his confer-ence’s coach of the year eight times as well as earn-ing regional

coach of the year award three times. His 827 victories are the most by any UNF head coach, and he ranks 12th all-time among Division II coaches with a .694 winning percentage. Under Rho-des, the Ospreys have been ranked no. 1 seven times—three times in NAIA and four times in NCAA Division II.

Rhodes built the UNF program from the ground floor, raising funds to build UNF’s on-campus facility, Harmon Stadi-um. In 1988, Rhodes’ and the Jackson-ville community’s dream came true with UNF’s first year of competition. From the very beginning, the Ospreys were winners. In just the first two seasons, UNF compiled 100 wins, which was the first time a beginning baseball program at any level had put together that many wins in two years. In 1989, Rhodes guided the Ospreys to an appearance in the NAIA World Series.

In addition to the magic he has worked with the Ospreys during his 20 years at the helm, Rhodes has also become an acclaimed international and professional coach. The pinnacle of that experience occurred when Rhodes was selected as the Head Coach of the Greek Olym-pic Team at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. Rhodes returned to serve as the Head Coach of the Greek National Team in the 2005 European Champi-onships. He was also an assistant for Greece in 2002 and 2003 and also served as an assistant coach for the 1996 Australian Olympic Team. In 1993,

Rhodes was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. During his eight years at Palm Beach, Rhodes compiled a record of 303-118, leading the school to a no. 1 national junior college ranking in 1979. From 1982 to 1987, Rhodes was an Assistant Coach at the University of Florida before being selected to begin the UNF baseball program.

Rhodes received an associate of arts degree from PBJC in 1966, a bache-lor’s degree in physical education from Florida Southern College in 1969, and a master’s degree in education from Flori-da Atlantic University in 1973.

The 2008 baseball campaign marked the 21st season at The Ohio State Uni-versity for Bob Todd. Since becom-ing the 10th head coach in Ohio State history in 1988, Todd has guided the Buckeyes to an 831-435-2 (.656) record. Under his guidance, the program set the school record with 52 victories in 1991 and reached the 50-win plateau again in 1999. His teams have never

had a losing season, have won at least 40 games 10 times in his 20-year ten-ure, and have never won fewer than 30

games. Every student-ath-lete who has played four years at Ohio State has won either a Big Ten regular season crown or tourna-ment champi-onship.

During his tenure, Ohio State has won six Big Ten

regular season championships and eight Big Ten tournament championships. He has led the program to 12 NCAA regional appearances (1991-1995, 1997, 1999, 2001-2003, 2005, 2007), including two second-place finishes and one third-place finish in the NCAA regionals. Since 1999, Todd has guided the Buckeyes to two regional championships and berths into super regionals in 1999 and 2003.

No program in the Big Ten has won more games than Ohio State since 1988, Todd’s first season in Colum-bus. Todd is one of only two confer-ence coaches to win more than 300 Big Ten games, and he reached that mark quicker than any coach in league his-tory. He is 384-217 (.639) against Big Ten opposition. He has won 20 or more conference games six times and has twice won 25 games, the conference record. His teams have played in the Big Ten tournament 19 times, missing only once, and have played in the tour-nament the last 11 seasons, which is the longest current streak by any team in the league.

Before his arrival at Ohio State, Todd was the Head Baseball Coach at Kent State, where he guided the Golden Flashes to a 124-82 (.602) record in four seasons. He began his collegiate coach-ing career at his alma mater, the Univer-sity of Missouri, where he served as an assistant coach from 1973-1983. Todd also has twice served as an assistant coach for Team USA in 1994 and 2001. He was recognized as the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1994, 1999, and

2001, becoming the first coach to be so named four times. He was nominated for national coach of the year honors in 1991, 1994, 1999, and 2003, and was chosen National Coach of the Year in 1994 by the Columbus Touchdown Club.

Jack Vallely is truly a legend among collegiate baseball mentors. He began his coaching career at Curry College in

1948, when the college was located on Com-monwealth Avenue in Boston’s Back Bay. Val-lely amassed incredible records, many of which may remain forev-er. Vallely was the longest active col-lege baseball

coach in the nation, and in 51 years of coaching, he never missed a game or practice. His career record of 726-278-4 (.727) places him among the elite in the college coaching ranks.

Vallely also earned 397 wins in 16 sea-sons as the Colonels’ basketball coach, making his combined career record 1,113-340-4 (.763).

Vallely received the NEIBA Andy Bay-lock Distinguished Service Award in 1978. In 1998, after 51 years of service to Curry College, he received a well-deserved recognition when the Curry College Baseball Diamond was dedicat-ed to him on Homecoming Weekend. In the same year, Collegiate Baseball

named Vallely one of the NCAA Divi-sion III Coaches of the Century.

Vallely was honored once again at Spring Sports Weekend in 2000. The event was designed to encourage sup-port for the Colonels’ baseball, softball, men’s tennis, men’s lacrosse and wom-en’s lacrosse programs. Curry used this event to further recognize his outstand-ing contributions to Curry athletics and particularly baseball.

Jerry Weinstein is a graduate of UCLA where he played for ABCA Hall of Fame coach Art Reichle. He received his BA, MS, and teaching credential at UCLA where he also spent two years coaching the freshman team.

After a year at Pioneer High School in Whittier, three years at Santa Monica High School, and three years at Los

Angeles Val-ley College, Weinstein spent 23 years at Sacramen-to City Col-lege. There he compiled an 831-208 record (.800) with 16 cham-pionships, two co-champi-onships, two state titles, and a National Championship

in 1998. Sac City was voted the Commu-nity College program for the decade of the 1990s by Collegiate Baseball.

While Weinstein was at Sac City, the Panthers produced 26 major league

players and had 213 players drafted. He was an assistant to Ron Fraser at the University of Miami in 1984, where they finished fourth in Omaha, and spent five years as an assistant at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with Larry Lee.

Weinstein has been active in inter-national baseball as Head Coach of the USA team in the 1970 University Games, and Assistant Coach of the USA team in the 1989 Pan Am Games, the 1992 Olympic Team, the 1996 Olympic Team (bronze medal). He was Head Coach of the 2004 USA Macca-biah Team (gold medal). He has spo-ken at clinics in Italy, Amsterdam, Rot-terdam, and Germany.

In professional baseball, Weinstein has been the Brewers Catching Coordina-tor, managed for the Expos and Cubs, and is currently managing for the Rock-ies in the California League. He was also Catching Coordinator and Director of Player Development for the Dodgers.

Weinstein is a member of the Califor-nia Community College Baseball Hall of Fame and the Sacramento City Col-lege Athletic Hall of Fame. A member of the ABCA for 39 years, Weinstein has written numerous articles, three books, and chapters for two others, plus he has produced various instruc-tional videos.

Honoring Those Who Started It AllIn 1945, a group of college baseball coaches gathered in New York City to formulate ideas for the promotion and improvement of the collegiate game.

The first meeting was held at the New York Athletic Club on June 29, 1945. Twenty-seven coaches were in atten-dance. Presentations were made urg-ing college coaches to organize so they could better promote the game, help gather national statistics, and cooperate with professional baseball.

It was also stated at this meeting that coaching ethics were of utmost impor-tance. It was determined that a consti-tution would be written and the new organization was to be named the American Association of College Base-ball Coaches. In 1983, the organiza-tion changed its name to the Ameri-can Baseball Coaches Association. At that time, the original group of coach-es probably did not realize that what they started would grow to over 6,000 coaching members representing every state and 27 countries.

Cheff Wins Prestigious Lefty Gomez AwardThe Lefty Gomez Award is one of the most prestigious awards in all of amateur baseball. Named after the great Lefty Gomez, this award is pre-sented by the American Baseball Coaches Association each year to an individual who has distinguished him-self amongst his peers and has con-tributed significantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally, and inter-nationally. This year’s recipient is Ed

Cheff, Head Coach at Lewis-Clark State College.

Cheff is entering his 33rd season at Lewis-Clark State College. He has built one of the most impressive col-

legiate ath-letic teams in the nation at any level, as the Warriors have won 16 national titles in the past 25 years.

From 1982 to 1992, the Warriors played in 11 consecu-tive national championship games and

won eight. Five of these titles were earned in the 1980s, five more in the 1990s, and five in the new millennium, including the last two. The Warriors’ overall win-loss record under Cheff is a remarkable 1,617-410.

More than 100 of Cheff’s former War-rior players have gone on to play pro-fessional baseball and several have played in the major leagues. His teams have been consistently recognized by peers and professional scouts as being well prepared and aggressive.

Cheff has not only built successful col-legiate baseball teams but he has also worked to instill a sense of pride and work ethic in each Warrior that has come through his program. Warrior baseball is valued by the local community for its dedication to active involvement with local events, fundraisers, and volunteer programs. The impact of the program is noteworthy both on and off the field.

Cheff has been named NAIA Coach of the Year eight times and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1994 and the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2006. He has addressed the ABCA on six occasions.

Away from Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field, Cheff has coached the Alaska League’s Anchorage Bucs and Fairbanks Gold Panners. Cheff also coached Team USA in 1994 as its hitting and third base coach.

On May 11, 1996, Cheff captured his 1,000th career victory with a double-header sweep over Central Washington, becoming only the third coach in NAIA baseball history to win 1,000 games. He became only the fourth coach at any level to win 1,500 games during the 2006 NAIA World Series.

Honors LuncheonEach year, the Honors Luncheon is one of the convention highlights since it allows the ABCA to pay tribute to some very special people. This year is no exception.

Larry Templeton, Judy Scarafile, and Ken Ravizza will be receiving ABCA Meritorious Service Awards. The recipients of the Meritorious Ser-vice Awards are selected by the ABCA Hall of Fame Com-mittee and approved by the Board of Directors. The award goes to individuals who

Due to the unique 3-wheel design, you can see the ball clearly all the way through the feeding motion, acceleration and release, just like a live pitcher.

The hitter sees when to stride and the angle of release, giving him an actual live-arm sense of timing and location.

Using 3 wheels, the Hack Attack throws all pitches - from major league fastball to right and left handed breaking pitches - all with a simple and immediate speed dial adjustment (No awkward or time consuming moving of the throwing head).

Extremely mobile; on and off the field with ease.

As proven by our extensive customer list of the top programs in the country, in a very short time the Hack Attack’s “complete-vision design” has made it the most valuable training tool on the market today.

Wind Weighted® baseball tarps are virtu-ally windproof. These rain covers for the mound, home plate, and the bullpens

have steel chain in their edge hem, so wind can-

not get under them. They stay down in high winds without stakes or sandbags. They’re also easy to install, remove, and store. The tough, waterproof vinyl-polyester fabric is treated for UV rays and mildew. These patented tarps are pro-tected by a three-year factory warranty, and they’re widely used by high schools, colleges, and even Major League teams.

ball. The Power Bag allows the hitter to power through contact and finish the swing. Use good point-of-contact mechanics and the bag will swing high-er (visual reward). Use lazy hips, rolled wrists, or swing around the ball and the bag will not move nearly as much.

American Baseball Coaches Association MembershipIn 1945, a group of college baseball coaches gathered in New York City to formulate ideas for the promotion and improve-

ment of collegiate baseball. That group founded what is known today as the American Baseball Coaches Association. Over the past 60 years, the association has grown to include membership in every division of amateur baseball and is

recognized as the world’s largest baseball association.

The main objective of the ABCA is educational in nature, helping to improve the level of coaching. The ABCA helps to promote rapport among the coaches and the divisions within baseball and recognizes deserving players and coaches through

several sponsorship/award programs.

Membership for the ABCA is only $30 per year for US residents (plus $3 handling fee), $35 for Canadian members (plus $3 handling fee), and $40 for international members (plus $3 handling fee). All memberships must be paid in US funds. The ABCA does not accept purchase orders.

Company Q&A

Reebok Baseball has introduced the Vector O Series of baseball bats in -3 (adult), -8.5 (senior league), and -11 (youth) weight-to-length ratios. The new O-Technology, which can enhance the efficiency of a hitter’s swing, launched for retail on Nov. 1, 2008.

What is the O-Technology used in Reebok’s newest baseball bats?

Each Vector O baseball bat consists of O-Technology, a pure aerodynamics concept that is very simple, yet tech-nologically advanced, and never before thought possible in a baseball bat. Engineered into the composite handle section are three strategically placed O-Ports, which can reduce drag when the bat is swung.

How can this technology help hitters?

With the Vector O, hitters can experience a faster swing speed because they are

able to get their hands through the hitting zone

quickly, which is a critical par t of hitting. Maximizing the efficiency of a hitter’s swing can determine how far the ball travels.

What kind of aerodynamic testing has been done to show that the O-Ports can reduce drag on a hitter’s swing?

Through testing and computer modeling at an independent laboratory, we can see the reduction in drag (as shown in the diagram at left) through significant air flow lines that are visible around the bat shaft. In a comparison chart, our Vector O-Bat was tested against the leading competitor’s bat—note how thick the air flow lines are around the competitor’s bat handle versus the Vector O handle. In addition, note the

lack of turbulence behind the Vector O, which shows the bat handle cutting through the air more efficiently than the competitor’s bat handle.

Why do you believe this product will be successful?

Three reasons: First, this bat has vis-ible technology that the consumer can relate to. It’s not “my alloy is stronger than yours” or “my sweet spot is bigger than yours,” which the typical consumer cannot see, test for easily, or under-stand completely. The three O-Ports are real, and aerodynamics is a simple concept to grasp.

Second, the O-Technology is patent-pending and protected

by law. No other bat manufacturer can employ this technology. It totally differentiates us from everyone else and is not a one-hit wonder, as several platforms off this basic design are being developed for many years of new introductions.

Third, it’s a technology that really can work to enhance the efficiency of a hitter’s swing. It’s not just smoke and mirrors like other bat marketing stories that you hear year in and year out.

Where did the technology originate?

Reebok has partnered with Prince Sports, Inc., headquartered in Bordentown, N.J., to bring this technol-ogy to baseball bats, hockey sticks, and lacrosse handles. Prince first intro-duced the O-Technology in tennis rack-ets and now has a full line of tennis rackets engineered with this technology.
