President’s Letter
by Steve Freeborn
Do you ever ask yourself, "Why do
I continue to swim?", "How
important is swimming to my life?".
I suspect that for almost
everyone of us who swims with
BWAQ, or any other Masters club
for that matter, swimming
continues to play a very important
part in each of our lives, and as
we get older, maybe even more
so. Some of us still like the
continued adrenalin rush that
comes with competition, but I
suspect that every one of us, more
than anything, enjoys the
continued health benefits, that
feeling of family, and that sense of
belonging that comes from being a
part of BWAQ. So, what if one
day, you could no longer swim.
What would you do? How would it
impact your life?
Unfortunately, life can some
times throw us a curve ball. At
some point in our lives, even just
starting out after college, or after
years of employment some of us
may find ourselves without a job
or experiencing limited finances...
for any number of reasons;
certainly far more than I could
begin to list here. When we
experience that level of stress that
comes with financial uncertainty,

Spring is in the air and it’s also
the season for PNA CHAMPS/NW
Zone Championships. It’s also the
one time of year you may feel a
squeeze of pressure to enter and/
or volunteer for an event. If we
can’t coerce you into swimming the
meet, we may even use the big G
(guilt) tactic. We want you to swim!
PNA Champs is a meet that
Blue Wave has hosted my many
years (I don’t even know the exact
number), even back when we were
FW Masters.
The meet is a time for our
awesome swim community to pull
together our brute forces and swim
for fun, volunteerism, relays and
some best times of this season.
The funds raised from this swim
meet go back into our annual
budget and helps off set our
annual expenses.
The meet is about participation
and getting as many of the Blue
Wave Family under KCAC’s roof at
one time and to be united with as
many teammates we can on the
weekend of April 8 and 9. Please
consider slowing down on life and
committing one day or even the
weekend to PNA Champs, you
won’t regret it.
If you are saying, I would enter

Swim Around Lido Key
by Zena Courtney
One wonders what motivates a
person to swim 7 miles in open
water on the other side of the
country. If you ask me, the reason
is because it is there! (www.SwimWithoutLimits.com). There are so many swims and so
little time in life. Julie Montiel’s
sudden passing has made me a
little more attune to life’s fleeting
offerings. What better way to whip
me out of my melancholy than to
target a new and challenging
event. I have been steadily
increasing my Sunday continuous
swim times by 15 minutes beyond
the 1 hour swim workout since the
end of January; today was 1.5
hours more. It is recommended
that one complete a 3 hour swim
as minimum training. I am hoping
to avoid injury by slowly increasing
by only 15 minutes each week, so
far so good. My chances of
winning the female division or even
the Masters female division are
slim to none, so why do it? Like I
said, because it is there and, as a
Race Director myself, I am also
curious about how other open
water races are conducted in order
to improve our current events. I will
also conveniently be on the correct
coast to celebrate my in-laws 50th
wedding anniversary the following
weekend. So yes, I am passing up
SCY USMS Nationals in Sunny
Riverside, California for this
adventure. Wish me luck!

USMS Leadership Summit
by Zena Courtney
Many of you have no doubt heard of
USMS or United States Masters
Swimming. The national membership-
operated nonprofit organization that
provides membership benefits to nearly
60,000 Masters swimmers across the
country. Underneath the umbrella of
USMS, the U.S. is divided into 52 Local
Masters Swimming Committees (we are
Pacific Northwest/PN) and 5 Zones (we
are Northwest) that help USMS manage
their direct support to more than 1,500
Masters Swimming Clubs and Workout
Groups (we are Club BWAQ). I also serve
as the Vice President of the PN LMSC
better know as the PNA. USMS paid to
send a leader from each of the 52 LMSC
to a summit to the LMSC spread the
message of health, fun and fitness for
adults thru swimming (see USMS strategy
infographic on next page) .
I was selected from the PNA Board to
meet with other LMSC chairs from all over
the U.S. to share valuable information on
how to best serve our swimmer
population. Here are some statistics/ideas
I learned that I’d like to share. Did you
know that 70% of the entire USMS
membership never competes? Seems like
the PNA’s main focus has been swim
meets as long as I have been a member.
Hmmm, makes you wonder what the
others are getting out of their USMS
membership. The USMS website does
however, offer an entire Fitness and
Training section with free fitness log and
online workouts. But the best thing the
PNA can be doing for our membership is
to share our awesome PNA coaches
through free or discounted clinics. Do you
agree? What are your ideas? Let me
know at [email protected].
Last Saturday at the Board
meeting the topic of newsletter
articles came up. As usual I was very
quiet and not really paying attention.
Next thing I knew, I was the guinea
pig to write the first Spotlight Article
introducing myself to BWAQ.
For those of you who don't know
me, my name is Scott W. Matthews. If
you ever forget my name, just look at
my towel. The name is proudly
printed right in the middle of it for
everyone to see. I was born 55 years
ago in Spokane Washington, an Air
Force baby. My parents moved home
to Kent In 1962 and have lived in the
same house since 1964. My 2 sisters
and I were raised by good, caring,
devoted and loving parents. We were
blessed with grandparents who lived
about a mile away with property on
Lake Meridian. Virtually all family
activities happened at that house and
at that lake. From as far back as I
can remember Lake Meridian was the
center point of our family’s life. I can
tell you all, I literally have been
swimming in Lake Meridian for more
than 50 years. The first time I swam
across Lake Meridian was in 1969, I
was 8 years old! I took swim lessens
at the Lake Meridian County Park.
(continued on page 7)
Editor’s NoteWe will be featuring a member
of our BWAQ family every
month until we run out of
members! Let me know who
you want to hear about next!

I was a lifeguard in high school at that
same park. Around 1968 the Kent
Meridian High School Pool opened. My
parents put me on the swim team
where I stayed as a team member of
the "Kent Dolphin Swim Team" until I
graduated High School in 1980. From
9th grade on I also swam on the
Kentridge High School Swim Team. A
team I remember very well. The Team
Captain was our very own Mike
Murphy. Even back then, I was never a
sprinter. I always did the distance
events. I guess I have never really
liked making my heart beat fast.
After High School I joined the
Navy. I got Married a year after that
and had my son the year after Jill and I
were married. Our daughter waited for
3 more years before she decided to join
our happy little family. With the Navy
the 4 of us moved between Memphis
Tennessee and Whidbey Island
Washington a couple time over a 10
year span. A short 4 year tour in
Southern California and then finely we
were able to settle in the house we now
live in, 22 years ago.

Column

Coaches Column, continued
I can’t or haven’t done a dive in 20
years: Ask your coach. We will do
dive options during and at the end
of practice. All you need to do is
ask and it will be done if it’s not
being offered. We’d love to teach
you how to dive with your goggles
staying on and without splatting
OR you can strart in the water
from a push!
I don’t have any times: Ask
your coach. We can help we’re
good at guesstimating where
you’re at.. DON”T be the bozo that
enters with a NT just because you
literally don’t have a time because
it’s been a while. ASK YOUR
COACH
Don’t know what to swim? Ask
your coach. We are here for you
and want to see you succeed. Try
something new, try something
risky because you never know
what it’s going to be like until you
create your experience.
What will workouts be
looking like? It’s time to get the
lead out of our fanny and out of
our comfort zone. Sets will be
focusing on higher tempo drills,
emphasis on skills and kicking
and speed work. All of this
combined increases endurance
assuming you’re doing what we
ask of you:) You have to be willing
to really dig deep and get your
speed up even if it’s only 25’s. If
you’re doing this and don’t like the
extra rest, there’s a good chance
your not pushing hard enough. It’s
ok to hang on the wall for an extra
minute or take a face up 50 because
you WANT air. These behaviors are a
coaches dream and are a lot of fun if
you can see that doing something
different can give you awesome
results.
Here’s an example: If you want to
go a fast time in the 50 free; during
25’s at practice, you should be holding
no slower than 90% of max HR (max
HR for 60 sec = 220-age, usually)
when doing them on :40 or even 1:00.
Want to really bump up the intensity
hold that pace to the feet (w/flip turn).
If you want to be at pace for
something you should be at 80% of
max HR during the main set. We get a
little distracted by how things feel like I
exerted myself 80% vs literally being
at 80% of your max HR. If you’re
looking at longer events, knowing what
your goal per 100 is, is a necessity so
you know what to hold and if you’re on
track during your workouts.
These examples are
generalizations and can be tailored a
bit based on what you’re doing. The
point of these examples are the fact if
we have expectations and or goal
times we need to be realistic and start
focusing on our goals on the daily
during our workouts now to get the
results we want.
Swimming a lot of yards gets you
good at swimming a lot of yards. If you
want to be able to race and not feel
like a Mac truck hit you and get decent
times you have to focus on being a
little uncomfortable at workout daily.
Not just a week before the meet.

President’s

that is when the sense of family
and that sense of belonging is
most important. It is at these
times that we need to stay in the
water and stay involved. I also
find that at times like this, people,
rather than look for help, tend to
withdraw. They are embarrassed
or afraid, for any number of
reasons, to share what is going
on in their lives.
If you are one of these
people, or know someone who is
experiencing financial difficulties,
but loves swimming and would
like to keep swimming as a part
of their lives, BWAQ is here to
help and to keep you a part of
our "family".
For many years now, BWAQ
has had a scholarship fund,
where we help swimmers who
might be experiencing financial
difficulties. We, as a club, have
not really publicized this program
as much as we should, but
recent circumstances have
changed that.
In January of this year, we
lost a very integral, and much
loved, member of our BWAQ
family.... Julie Montiel. She
defined, what I believe, to be the
epitome of masters swimming,
and in particular, to be a member

On a personal note, I have
been involved as the meet co-
President’s Letter, continued director or director of the PNA
Championship since the Aquatic Center
opened in 1990, and even before that
when the meet was held elsewhere (I
am dating myself) . In all those years,
one of the more difficult jobs was always
getting someone to do hospitality. Then
Julie stepped in and agreed to handle
this aspect of the meet. For many years,
not only did she do the job, but she did it
WELL.....beyond "well". Whether it was
PNA Champs, Swim Defiance, Last
Gasp, or any other club event, Julie was
always there and could always be
counted on.
For this reason, the BWAQ Board
chose to rededicate the BWAQ
scholarship fund in the name of Julie
Montiel; hence forth it will be called the
"Julie Montiel Scholarship Fund". As
Julie was always there for the club and
its members, we want those who are
experiencing some level of financial
need, to know that the Julie Montiel
Scholarship Fund is there to help them.
For those who find themselves in
some kind of need, please know that the
fund is there to help and that it is
confidential information for the Board
members alone. If you find yourself in
some need, please do not hesitate to
approach any one of the board. It is
important, not only to you, but to all of
us, that you stay active with the club. In
exchange for financial support, you will
be expected to simply offer some
volunteer time at any of the number of
events that BWAQ hosts over the course
of the year. The volunteer time is not all
consuming and it gives you the

a while, the 25's turned into 50's and
