Calgary really comes alive in the summer; it’s the season
that offers something for everyone.
If you are a person who enjoys a peaceful, backyard
barbeque with a few close friends or someone who prefers
fireworks and festivals surrounded by many, you can enjoy
both in Calgary and we have plenty of suggestions for you
and your family. See Events on page 4.
If you are staying in town with the kids this summer, you will
want to plan a day trip, pack a picnic and head down to the new
Calgary Co-op Kids Zone at the Calgary Zoo. The entire family
is sure to enjoy watching the menagerie of colourful animals
passing by on the new children’s carousel. Pictures on page 5.
Barbeque in the backyard or picnic in the park, whichever you
choose this summer, Calgary Co-op has everything you need to
make your summer delicious! From marinated meats to perfectly
ripened fruits, it’s all in store for you today. See page 6 for some

Summer ContentsCo-op NewsSummer – the
season of freshness!
Our Vision To be the premier shopping destination in the communities we serve.
Our Mission To provide outstanding service, quality products, superior facilities
and exceptional value.
Our Values Integrity, Respect, Commitment, Leadership, Community
Production Teams
During September and October, your Calgary
Co-op board of directors will be hosting
our annual Meet Your Directors events in all
Calgary Co-op food centres.
This event gives you, our member-owners,
an opportunity to talk with us and to ask
questions about your Calgary Co-op. We
always welcome the opportunity to speak
with our member-owners and look forward to
seeing you when you stop by to visit with us
during these events.
Planning is also underway for our 54th annual
general meeting to be held on March 9, 2011, as
well as for the director election. This year, we
are seeking qualified candidates for three board
positions, all for three year terms. We encourage
any member who is considering standing for
election for the board of directors to obtain a
copy of the 2011 Director Election Handbook,
which will be available in Calgary Co-op food
centres and on www.calgarycoop.com
starting mid-September. The handbook
provides important information about the
role of a director, eligibility, the nomination
process, important deadlines for the election,
and other important dates. Information will
also be published in the fall and winter editions
of Co-op News.
Your board also looks forward to seeing many
of our senior members at our annual Seniors’
Day event at Heritage Park on August 24. See
page 5 for event and ticket information.
On behalf of the Board of Directors
Stuart Cantrill, Board Chair
It’s one thing to talk about doing our best to
provide our member-owners with outstanding
service, quality products, superior facilities
and exceptional value, but we also deliver on
this promise.
We take pride in our employees and the
excellent customer service they provide
every day, so it is no surprise that two of our
employees, Carmela Russo and Kirstie Davies,
recently won White Hat awards. Carmela was
honoured with the Mayor’s White Hat Award,
an achievement over and above all categories,
while Kirstie received a coveted White Hat
Award for Retail Service Excellence. We
congratulate them on their achievements and
also extend congratulations to all of our other
employees who were nominated for a White
Hat Award this year (see page 10).
In addition to providing excellent customer
service, we recognize that our member-owners
expect us to provide great quality products
at a great price and to support Canadian
growers at every opportunity, which we do
well. For example, naturally grown and ripened
tomatoes are delivered to our stores within 24
hours of being picked at Paradise Hill Farm in
Nanton. Being locally owned allows us to seek
out the freshest products for delivery to our
stores as soon as they become available.
We are also committed to providing you with
the best fresh quality products and grocery
variety at a competitive price. The weekly price
checks we conduct of our main competitors
confirms that our prices are the same and, in
many cases, better than their prices. See page
9 for a summary of our weekly price checks
during June. When you shop at Calgary Co-op,
you not only support a locally owned company,
you are assured of getting fresh quality
products at a great price!

A Hole in One!Calgary Co-op hosted its 17th Annual Charity Golf Classic on June 9th at
Heritage Pointe Golf and Country Club. The Fan 960’s Mike Richards and
team got the morning started by broadcasting their morning show, live
from Heritage Pointe. This year’s tournament began with dark skies and
high wind warnings. Within a couple of hours it was really raining hard,
but the torrential rain and raging wind couldn’t dampen the spirits of our
dedicated golf teams. Many golfers braved all 18 holes! Thank you to
Fan 960 and our golfers for making this day a success.
Our tournament raised over $230,000 bringing the grand total raised
since 1993 to over $3.3 million! This year’s recipients are the Calgary
Zoological Society for the new Calgary Co-op Kids Zone and the Alberta
Children’s Hospital for their Bring in the Clowns program.
On behalf of everyone at Calgary Co-op, we extend a special thank you to
all of the sponsors who made this event possible. Without their help and
continuing support, we simply would not be able to raise the outstanding
amount of funds we do for deserving local charities. Thank you as well
to the professional staff at Heritage Pointe, and to our hardworking Golf
Classic Committee and other volunteers for putting on such a fun and
worthwhile event.
Calgary Co-op Whole Health ChallengeCongratulations to all of the participants in this year’s Calgary Co-op
Whole Health Challenge! Over 1,400 members signed up for the 12 week
challenge with goals of making healthy lifestyle choices to improve their
overall health and fitness levels. The successes and achievements of
the participants were incredible! Each participant completed six mini-
challenges, and many attended motivational seminars on goal setting
such as exercise, running, walking and smoking cessation. Our pharmacies
worked with participants to chart their progress and to keep everyone
motivated. Our Grand Finale was held at the Olympic Oval on May 8th
with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in both the men and women
categories along with some fantastic prizes. A medal was also awarded
to the winner of the Calgary Co-op Employee category.
Thank you to all of our participants and partners in the Calgary Co-op Whole
Health Challenge, including the Calgary Weight Management Centre, The
Running Room, Calgary Flames, CrossFit Calgary, Optimum Performance
Training, Allegro Cheese, Pfizer, Olympic Oval, University of Calgary, Team
Tri Life, Calgary Herald, Westjet, Healthwave Diagnostechs, XL 103 FM,
Resorts of the Canadian Rockies and CTV.
Be sure to watch for the next Calgary Co-op Whole Health Challenge,
which promises to be bigger and better in 2011!

Draft Horse Town Calgary Co-op was a major sponsor of the new Draft Horse Town at the
Stampede grounds this year, which included a “Calgary Co-op General Store”.
Thousands of visitors took advantage of the opportunity to visit Draft
Horse Town and met Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons and Shires; the
mighty horses that helped build the West. We also sponsored the
winning team in the Draft Horse Competition!
This was a great opportunity to develop a new partnership with The
Calgary Stampede and to show support for our community. Thanks for
coming out!

fast, so tickets are limited to a maximum of two tickets per senior member.
The event goes ahead sun, rain or otherwise! Watch for posters in our food

For those of you requiring Calgary Transit, there will be a bus traveling

how properly inflated tires can increase fuel efficiency – something of
interest to all of us!
CRAZ volunteers will be visiting 16 Calgary Co-op gas bars over three weeks
beginning July 28th to talk with our members and customers about how
to check tire pressure and other maintenance tips that can help save you
money! Visit www.calgarycoop.com for dates and gas bar locations.

Just Add FruitThere is nothing better on a hot summer day than grazing on the multitude
of fresh fruit that is available only during these warm months. At Calgary
Co-op, we realize that the quality of your summer fruit is paramount, so we’re
bringing the fruit stand to you! Our fruit stand houses delectable cherries,
juicy peaches and sweet nectarines, just to name a few. And while these
beauties are more than appetizing on their own, try the following recipe with
stone fruit fresh from Calgary Co-op.

Wines & Spirits StoresRenovations at our Taradale Wines & Spirits location are now complete.
Customers will enjoy this larger facility, the new interior décor, walk-in beer
cooler and expanded product selection. Planning for renovations to our
Beddington Wines & Spirits location is currently taking place and will see some
of the same changes incorporated. We’ve also recently opened our 5,000
square foot Kingsland Wines & Spirits Store at 6709 Macleod Trail SW.
Residents around our Crowfoot location will be glad to hear that our new
Wines & Spirits store is currently under construction. When complete, the
location will include all the products and services you’ve come to know and
trust. At the same time, the Oakridge Wines & Spirits location will be moving
from inside our Oakridge Centre mall to its own stand alone location across
the parking lot from the centre. Watch for both of these locations to open
this fall!
Gas Bar and Car WashesOur Crowfoot and Shawnessy gas bars have begun work on major underground
fuel storage upgrades. These upgrades will increase the fuel storage capabilities
at these locations and will add a diesel offering to all fuel pumps at Crowfoot.
We appreciate your patience while we make these necessary upgrades.
Planning continues for our new stand alone gas bar in the northwest community
of Panorama Hills. The site is located on the corner of 14th Street and Panatella
Boulevard NW. Watch for updates in future issues of Co-op News.
Food Stores and Pharmacy NewsRenovations are now complete at North Hill, Brentwood and Village Square
centre pharmacies. All three centres now offer new prescription pick up and
drop off areas. Brentwood and Village Square also have a private consultation
room available where our pharmacists can talk with their customers about
health matters.
Planning continues for our new site in High River. The site is located on the
south side of town at the corner of 12th Avenue SE and 1st Street SE in the new
Montrose housing and commercial subdivision being constructed by Dundee
Developments. Our gas bar is slated to open in early 2011, with the food centre
opening in late 2012.

Did you know that in 1947, Bill Herron, a local
oilman, and his family wore white hats to the
Calgary Stampede Parade? His family won “best
dressed” that year and the demand for white
hats exploded.
Don Mackay, who was then the mayor of Calgary
and a fan of cowboy hats himself, decided to
present the white hats as gifts to visiting dignitaries.
Sixty years later, Smithbilt Hats continues to
make the famous white hats that are used
each year at the Honorary White Hat Awards
to recognize individuals and organizations that
have shown a long-term commitment to the
hospitality and tourism industry, and have
strengthened Calgary’s reputation as a world-
