Co-op Newsletter
March 2018
A late rain in February has certainly lifted the spirits of many of our members. Hopefully we get some good follow up rains in March to set us up for decent autumn break.
This newsletter concentrates on the main commodities we sell in autumn; calving season goods, autumn fertiliser applications, cattle drenches and pasture seeds.

News from the Board
Directors are focusing on two major activities in March. In early March we are working with a mainland consultant Patten Bridge to investigate how we as a Co-op can expand the ways we deliver value to our members in the coming years. We will keep members informed on the outcomes of this work in the coming months.
On the 20th of March Directors will be attending the Gallagher evening at Tall Timbers in Smithton. Members are strongly encouraged to attend this free dinner and hear Mark Harris; Global Marketing Manager for Gallagher speak about the challenges facing farmers in New Zealand. The evening marks the first anniversary of our store in Smithton and it’s an opportunity for Directors and staff to meet the increasing number of our members in the Circular Head region.
I’m delighted that three of our current Directors, Gavin Pearce, Simon Elphinstone and Rob Sadler have volunteered to undertake two postgraduate level courses through the University of Newcastle on Co-operative Management and Co-op Law and Governance. While the course is funded through the national Farming Together program, it’s still a significant commitment in effort and time by these three Directors. It’s also a wonderful example of the commitment and professionalism we seek from Directors of our Co-op. Rod Rylah
Autumn Topdressing Pastures – Top up your Nutrients now!!
Autumn is the ideal time to top up your nutrients ready for winter and more importantly the spring, it is essential to ensure adequate nutrient levels are available to maximize the spring growing conditions and to maximize pasture growth for Silage and Hay conservation.
Nutrients removed (kg/ha)
Nitrogen Phosphorus Potassium Sulphur
Pasture Silage
(3T/DM/ha) 120 12 60 11
Pasture Hay
(4T/DM/ha) 160 16 80 15
The table indicates the approximate amount of N, P, K & S removed in pasture silage and hay production,
and these amounts may vary due to factors such as yield, soil type, soil fertility and seasonal conditions.
Single Super (SSP) and Potassium blends such as 0-7-10-9, 0-7-13-8 and 0-6-17-7 will address this nutrient removal. Trace elements can also be added to these blends if required, Sodium Molybdate can be added if not applied in the last 3 - 5 years, if pH (water) is less than 6 and if the clover content in the pasture is less than adequate, also check soil test results for Zinc & Copper levels.
There are no issues in applying autumn topdressing blends to dry pastures. Get in early and beat the rush to avoid delays such as contractor’s availability and to limit damage to pastures with drier conditions. Soil testing will help determine if your soil nutrient levels are Low, Adequate or High. Providing you with the information needed to set a fertiliser plan. Now is the best time to get the soils tests and a recommendation done.
