Introduction
Cigarette paper plays a critical role in CO diffusion during the
smoking process.
CO diffusion through cigarette paper is critical in controlling CO in
mainstream smoke.
Introducing bands with low diffusion to meet LIP regulations
increase CO level in mainstream smoke.
Understanding CO diffusion around the LIP paper in situ around
and in the band may provide further mechanistic understanding on
CO diffusion during smoking.
There are no available tests to measure CO diffusion at specific
locations in cigarette paper during the smoking process.
This presentation will report on preliminary measurements of CO
diffusion through the band and base paper during the smoking
process.

Experimental Setup
Upon SWM request Arista Lab developed a technique
to measure CO diffusion at specific locations along the
cigarette tobacco column.
A ring that goes around the tobacco column is attached
to a tube connected to a CO analyzer.
The CO analyzer produces a signal corresponding to
CO level diffusing through the paper.
Signal in volts was changed to mg/puff after calibration
to known flows.
ISO smoking regime was used.

Summary
A new technique was developed to measure in situ CO
diffusion through cigarette paper at specific locations
during puffing.
Overall CO diffusion through the paper is 30% higher
than diffusion through the bands.
CO diffusion through paper between the bands is ~50%
higher than through the bands.
Trend shows higher CO diffusion through bands with
higher diffusion capacity.
