time in American History. Beginning in the 1920’s, Harlem’s artists wrote poetry, painted, played music (swing and blues) and danced. Some famous artists were Langston Hughes, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and more. The Black people who lived in Harlem created a new culture of art, music, food and relationships.

Langston Hughes was born in Missouri where he was raised by his grandmother. She told him stories of African history and gave him a sense of black pride. She took good care of him, kept him out of trouble and encouraged him and his writing. He moved to Harlem and became one of the most important African American poets of his time.
