CMPC LOGOSAnnual GenOn Youth Summit Trip

The youth of CMPC are looking forward to another year of the LOGOS Summer Youth Conference (now called the GenOn Youth Summit)! It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore, experience, and deepen our Christian faith as we play together, eat together, study the Bible together, and worship together. We’ll be on the campus of the University of Scranton (PA) July 21st-27th. One day is devoted to mission work!

(This word collage just about sums up our week!)

To pay for the trip, we rely on the family of each youth attending to contribute a portion of the cost. We then partner with friends and extended family to raise the rest (that’s you!).

We have already raised $950 (THANK YOU!) to help another church get to the youth summit –Concordia Lutheran Church in Worcester, Massachusetts. Now we need your help to get us there! We hope to reach our goal ($3,000.00) by June 15th!

There are several ways for you to help us in our fundraising efforts: **Make a flat donation of any amount **Purchase Giant Food gift cards available after worship services at CMPC most Sundays (5% goes toward helping to fund our leaders’ attendance) **Attend our Musical “Treats & Sweets” Night on Sunday, June 9th (7 p.m.) and make a donation, bid on auction items, or donate a special auctioned item (vacation home, sports tickets, restaurant gift card, meal in your home) for others to bid on.

Thank you for your support and prayers! Attending the summit this summer are:

Lindsay Albright Ashley Imus Rebecca Pfeiffer Liz Perraud (adult) Joshua Aslam Jacklyn Meyers Shannon Weathers Don Wade (adult)Brad Bruce Zach Meyers Laura Yawney Ian Holderman Kelsey Mills Bill Gretsch (adult) Tim Holzberg Meghan Phillips Alfreda Gill (adult)

Spring has definitely arrived! April was a very busy month at Christ Memorial Christian Preschool as we continued our curriculum theme, “God and my World,” through the exploration of animals, insects, and their habitats.

After we returned from our Easter break we began learning about animals that live in the air and water. The children made fish, crabs, and birds. We visited Robinson’s Nature Center and learned about animals that live in Maryland. The following week we concentrated on animals that live in the zoo and on a farm. Our art and craft projects revolved around these animals. We visited Sharp’s Farm to see farm animals, go on a hay ride, and learn about plants. Our month culminated in learning about pets and insects. Each class has a Butterfly Habitat. We are learning patience as we watch and wait for the caterpillars to turn into Monarch butterflies. Pet Day was at the end of the month. On this day each child was encouraged to bring in either a favorite stuffed animal or a live pet for Show and Tell. At the end of the day we gathered outside to visit with the larger live pets.

As part of our participation as a Healthy Howard County childcare site, many of our children and their families participated in Screen free Week. During this week they went without TV, DVDs, and video games.

The Bible stories in April centered on Christ’s life on earth, after He rose from the dead, and the spreading of the Good News.

Registration for the 2013/14 school year is ongoing. Please let your family and friends know about us. Our classes and tuition rates are as follows:

2-day class ~ ($130) this class is on Tuesdays & Thursdays (9 a.m. to noon) and is for children who turn age three before September 30th. 3-day class ~ ($190) this Monday, Wednesday, Friday class (9 a.m. to noon) is for children who turn age four before September 30th. 5-day class ~ ($300) this class meets everyday (9 a.m. to noon), and is for children who will attend Kindergarten the following school year.

News from Christian Education

Sunday SchoolSunday School will continue through Sunday, May 19th and then we will break for summer. Come and join us at 9:15 a.m. in Fellowship Hall! We start with an opening activity led by Pastor Hoffman; then at 9:30 a.m. we have Sunday School for everyone – preschool through adult.

Annette Hinkle is teaching the final adult series for this program year. Each of these classes stands alone – you don’t have to attend all of the classes in the series. Come to as many as possible.

For our children, we have a class for preschoolers, for grades K – 2, and for grades 3 - 5. Middle schoolers meet as one class as do our high school students. We also have a nursery for our little ones (babies through age three) during Sunday School.

Sunday School ends promptly at 10:15 a.m. in time for everyone to attend the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

Please thank the following people for teaching our Sunday School classes this year: Adult Sunday School: Bill Anderson, Annette Hinkle, Steve Pettit, Jennifer Seinfield, and Jim Wade. Preschools: Michelle Farmer, Laura Yawney, and Debbie O’Neal. Grades K-2: Markita Garner and Sarah Trodden. Grades 3-5: Alfreda Gill and Rachel Wade. Middle School: Steve Kappes and Hyiwot Teshome. High School: Liz Perraud and Ryan Thomas.

Watch the August Herald for details about our fall program.

Sunday ExperienceSunday School does NOT replace the Sunday Experience – this program offers children an alternative to our worship service. Sunday Experience is designed for children in kindergarten through grade three. During Sunday Experience, children learn age appropriate worship skills that mirror what the adults are doing in worship. Children are dismissed for Sunday Experience following the Moment with Children in our worship service. Sunday Experience wil continue during the summer.

Please thank the following people for teaching Sunday Experience this year: Linda Johnson, Kathleen Hong, Donna Ueckermann, Carrie Jenkins, Becky Bruce, Laura Weisinger, and Missy Sullivan. And very special thanks to Brianna Ashman who was there throughout the program year witnessing to our children with music.

See you on Sunday, Debbie O’Neal

CMPC Missions: Habitat For HumanityEach month we will highlight the work of one of our many mission partners. This month we turn the spotlight on Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity was formed in 1976 by Millard Fuller to provide low cost affordable housing for low income families. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake (HFHC) was formed in 1982 to serve Baltimore City. In 2009 they merged with Anne Arundel County HFH, and in 2011 with Howard County HFH.

In 2001, CMPC joined United Churches, which was founded by Timonium United Methodist Church in 1998, to mobilize volunteer and financial resources to sponsor a house renovation with HFHC each year. As material costs increased and churches’ financial resources decreased, United Churches was unable to continue sponsoring houses. Instead, beginning in 2012, United Churches in consultation with HFHC, decided to pool available resources to improve a particular neighborhood instead of individual houses.

HFH homebuyers who move into renovated homes receive a zero-interest Habitat Mortgage. To qualify they must have the ability to pay a monthly mortgage but not be able to qualify for a bank loan, are in need of decent housing, are living in overcrowded or in deteriorating conditions, and are willing to put in 200 hours of “sweat equity” for a single adult family or 300 hours for a two adult family. Also, they are required to put in 50 hours of financial and homebuyer education.

A new HFHC sponsored ReStore will open on May 18th at 8909 McGaw ct. in Columbia. The mission of the ReStore is: •togenerateincomethatenablesHabitatforHumanityoftheChesapeaketocreateaffordable homeownership opportunities in Baltimore, Anne Arundel County, and Howard County •toservethecommunitybyprovidingqualityproductsataffordableprices •topreserveourenvironmentbykeepingreusableitemsoutofourlandfills

The ReStore accepts donations of furniture, appliances, building supplies, and tools which are re-sold to the general public. To make donations call 410-633-0506 and or make an arrangement for pickup.

HFH is a faith-based organization composed of different faiths (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and others). Through a New Spiritual Community established by HFHC, all faiths will join together to support the community in prayer. Starting April 18th, every two weeks, a list of names to include in your prayers will be sent via email. Initially it will be Habitat focused; that is, new home owners, volunteers, etc. Other names can be added later. Anyone interested in receiving this list or adding names may email [email protected].

HFHC needs volunteers for construction work, to work in the ReStore, prepare low-income families to become homeowners, plan construction work, promote and publicize HFH’s work, fundraise, maintain relationships with volunteers and donors, and manage HFH finances.

Address all Habitat questions to BJ Walworth at [email protected], (410) 300-0242.

For detailed information on HFH visit the following websites:http://habitatchesapeake.org/ http://chesapeakerestore.org/

We are proud to continue our financial support of HFH and encourage all to consider giving of your time and talents to this important ministry as well.

New Ad Hoc Facilities CommitteeAt its meeting on Monday, April 15th the session approved the formation of an Ad Hoc Facilities committee to evaluate our current and expected needs as a congregation and how our facilities do and do not meet those needs. This group will work diligently over the next number of months to develop a plan for addressing those needs. Members of the committee are as follows: Lauren Anderson, Kirsten Aquino, Katie Kinzie, Linda Lange, Jim Pierce, Jeff Seymour, Jerry Ueckermann, and Chip Yawney. Please keep these brothers and sisters in your prayers as they go about this very important work.

New HymnalsWhat is purple, rectangular, contains more than 800 hymns, and is coming to CMPC this fall? The new Presbyterian hymnal! It has been 23 years since the blue hymnals in our pew racks were published. The 217th General Assembly of the PC(USA)(2006) authorized the Presbyterian Publishing Company to create a new denominational hymnal. The result of PPC’s work is the 8th Presbyterian hymnal, titled “Glory to God,” to be published this fall. Four hundred copies of the hymnal will arrive in October. To celebrate this event, we are kicking off a new hymnal dedication drive. Order forms are available in the church office and will also be inserted in the Sunday bulletins. Orders should either be placed in the offering plate at worship or you can give them to Ariel in the church office during the week. For more information, please call Ariel at (410) 997-8011 or email [email protected].

Flowers for WorshipIf you would like to sponsor fresh flowers for a Sunday worship service in 2013 in memory or honor of someone or a special event please contact Ariel Wickham in the church office (410-997-8011 or [email protected]) to check availability.

Window On The Word

Christ Memorial Presbyterian ChurchMay 2013 Herald 13

Remember the story of Lot’s wife?(Gen 19: 26). Lot had moved into Sodom and became a respected citizen, sitting in the gate. We are not told anything about his wife, not even her name, but she apparently was a resident of Sodom when Lot married her.

When God decided to destroy Sodom, He sent two angels into Sodom to save Lot and his family. Although there is an interesting story about that, we must stay focused on “the Pillar.” When Lot couldn’t persuade the fiancés of his two daughters to believe him that Sodom would be destroyed, he returned home. In the morning, the angels ordered him to haste, but when he hesitated, the angels took his hands and the hands of his wife and two daughters and led them safely out. The angels then ordered them to flee to the mountains so they would not be endangered by the destruction on the plains. When he feared going to the mountains, he persuaded the angels to permit him to go to the “little village” close by, but they warned him to not look back. On their way to the village, Lot’s wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.

Now, did this really happen? What does this matter to us? Paul tells the Corinthians that these stories in the OT were written as examples for us to learn by. (1 Corinthians 10: 1-6)

Read Luke 17: 22-37. Jesus is teaching his disciples on the coming Kingdom. “For when the Son of Man returns, you will know it beyond all doubt. It will be as evident as the lightning that flashes across the sky.” (Luke 17: 24) He continues telling the last days will be as in the days of Noah- parties and weddings. Then He continues:

Pillar of Salt – True or False?By Leta Renich

Proverb of the MonthThe fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.- Proverbs 1: 7 NKJV

“And the world will be as it was in the days of Lot. People went about their daily business--eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and building-- until the morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and burning sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.” (Luke 17: 28-29) (Jesus confirms the stories of Noah and Lot, both.)

Then Jesus warns that it will be “business as usual” right up to the hour He comes. (It was in both the times of Noah and Lot.) “On that day a person outside the house must not go into the house to pack. A person in the field must not return to town. Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! Whoever clings to this life will lose it, and whoever loses this life will save it. (Luke 17: 31-33) This recognizes that the story of Lot’s wife looking back – desiring to hang on to her past rather than obeying the Lord - is told so that we may learn when we are warned not to look back.

Matthew and Luke both recorded much of Jesus speaking of His death and of future returns – first – resurrection and second – Second Advent. The Act and many Epistles speak of the second Advent. There is so much material we could spend months studying it, but that will have to wait. In the meantime, watch for His Second Coming which could be at any time. When it happens, don’t look back for anything. Just choose the Lord and look to Him. Maranatha. Let Him come!

“Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.” (Revelation 3: 22 NLT)
