What is CM-Path?

• Severe decline in the number of clinical academic pathologists over the past 15 years compared with other

clinical academic specialties

• Increasing need for molecular testing within the NHS

- New technologies

- New skills required

- Pathology capacity

• Disconnect between pathology research, clinical practice and industry

The ambition:

A UK-wide network of CM-Path ‘badged’ pathology centres

The purpose/objectives:

• Help establish UK-wide best practice for molecular

testing across the UK

• Support pathology centres to engage in research-based

activities: biobanking, clinical trials, tissue-based

research

• Support academic training and development

(Molecular

Diagnostics)

1. The future of modern medicine will be dictated by technical advancement, management advancements, and

advancements in molecular medicine – stratified medicine

2. Molecular Diagnostics in the fastest growing area in modern medicine

Changing the way we handle human tissues

• Optimal fixation for immunohistochemistry

• Routine handling of fresh tissue

• Optimal tissue selection for molecular analysis

• Better regional/ national standardisation

• Biobanking – a focus on tissue quality

• Engagement with industrial partners

100,000 Genomes Project

Transformational project

• Rare genetic diseases

• Cancer samples

• Fresh samples 5 x 5 x 5mm

• Cellularity score (EQA)

• Consent by Genomic staff

• HRA/HTA statement April 2017

Handling the tissues

• WGS - formalin fragments the DNA

• Eliminating formalin from theatres

• Small diagnostic biopsies best in 10% NBF

• Training staff to sample fresh tissue

• Fresh tissue can be stored at 4oC for ? *

• Maintenance at 4oC during transport

• Recording time of removal and arrival

* Currently under discussion

CM-Path Network: An Inclusive NetworkNetwork

CM-Path Network Requirements

• Named CM-Path representative in each department

• Best practice guidelines for molecular testing

• SOPs for tissue processing re genomics (fixation times etc.)

• Judging tumour content/quality

• Pathway for frozen tissue analysis/collection

CM-Path Network Aspirations

• Research/ training activities

• SOP for releasing tissues for research

• Accessing diagnostic archives for research – creating research biobanks

• Training/research opportunities – workshops, meetings, grants, directory

What will you get for signing up to the CM-Path NetworkNetwork

• Add your name to the pathology directory – become involved in research

• contact departments/fellow pathologists for advice

• Advice on obtaining research funding

• Check out information on training courses, workshops, funding opportunities and

more

• See case studies from fellow pathologists

• Check out our academic roadmap and advice on training

• Download and utilise our SOPs for best practice guidelines for molecular testing,

tissue processing re genomics (fixation times etc.), judging tumour content/quality,

pathway for frozen tissue analysis/collection

• Routinely updated SOPs based on changes in pathology practice

• Quarterly newsletter – linking you to CM-Path activity, opinion pieces, workshops,

training, opportunities to input into calls for information

• Opportunity to advertise specific projects

CM-Pathologists (The Pathology Directory)Network

I'm a pathologist, what will I get out of being on the directory

• Tell us your name, email, area of interest, what you might be interested in getting involved in an we can match

you up to various opportunities/you may be contacted by various people to get involved with projects or

scientific review committees

• Easily link up with fellow pathologists interested in research or trainees looking for projects to get involved in

I'm a research funding organisation what will I get out of using the directory:

• CM-Path encourages funding organisations that award research grants to incorporate a pathology review

• The pathology directory will help you to identify pathologists across the country that might be interested in

joining a funding committee. You will be able to see their speciality and any previous experience they might

have

I'm part of an industrial organisation or a researcher what will I get out of using the directory:

• Want to involve a pathologist in your work or need help developing a research proposal, use the directory to

more easily link yourself up to pathologists who want to be involved in research.
