•Why are you using the technology?•Does it enhance learning?•Does it move your students forward in their learning journey?•Could you do this without the technology? Even new technology can be used in old ways.•Bells, whistles and aesthetically pleasing does not mean the content is outstanding or accurate. Embedding It Within Your Classroom Programme


•Start with the topic not the technology. Having said that, sometimes the technology prompts an idea for classroom integration.

•Identify your achievement objectives and learning intentions.

•How might you meet these? - Now is the time to think about the ways you could include ICT.

•Consider - have the children got the necessary skills to use the technology for the purpose you intend? Will they be able to pick up the necessary skills quickly through just in time learning, or will the demands of the technology interfere with meeting your learning intentions?

Embedding It Within Your Classroom Programme


•Integrate/infuse it within your planning.

•Have a back up plan

Just for starters consider these…

•Podcasting - oral language, critical thinking, written language, reading, cooperating, collaborating, planning, risk taking & mistake making, social studies, science, reflection…

•Blogging - visual language, oral language, critical thinking, written language, reading, cooperating, collaborating, planning, risk taking & mistake making, social studies, science, reflection…

•Travel Buddies - social studies, written language - add a blog or podcast and it becomes even more integrated.

The Serious Stuff


Copyright - 50 years after death of creator in NZ, 70 years in US

• Be aware that the kids work is subject to copyright

•Make sure you and your children respect the copyright of others

•Plan to educate your children about copyright

•Creative Commons - this is a special type of copyright that allows people to copy, distribute (and in some cases make alterations to) a particular work as long as certain rules are followed. Often for non commercial use.

•Public Domain - No permission required to use . Can include things like Shakespeare as he wrote before copyright existed.

Privacy - Consider your digital footprint…this applies to adults as well as kids, once it’s there it stays there, especially social networking.

•Hectors World a good way to share this with kids

•Use pseudonyms or nicknames

•First names only

•Avatars

•No personal info

•Teacher moderation of comments

•Protected communities for educational use.

The Serious Stuff


School Policy - Be familiar with your School’s policy on ICT and internet usage

• Let people know what you are doing

•Ask

•Be clear about why you want to use a technology tool and how it will benefit your learners.

•Make sure you have permission from parents - does the current agreement cover what you want to do?

•A thought - with the rate at which the net is evolving can school policies keep up?

Ensuring It’s A Success


•Have a back up plan - servers crash, computers freeze, COWs run out of power.

•Don’t do too much or you’ll crash and burn. It’s better to decide to focus on one thing and do it well.

•Remember: new year, new class - you might need to go back to square one.

•Sometimes you can use more than one tool at a time e.g. embed mp3 files, video, PowerPoint slides, mouse drawn pictures,etc within your blog.

•Pay it forward - show others how to do what you do, you might start a trend.

Ensuring It’s A Success


•Don’t over plan - allow for serendipity.

•Do be organised.

•Embed it within your programme.

•Never stop learning and playing

•Find someone to share your highs and lows (Try blogging or twitter).

•Have fun and enjoy the ride.
