MPPA GRADUATES: ACHIEVING SUCCESSThe MPPA program’s quality is evi-

denced by the success of its graduates,

working in leadership positions across

California and beyond. In the public

sector, they can be found working as

city managers, public safety admin-

istrators, lobbyists, human resource

managers, policy analysts, recreation

directors, mental health directors,

school administrators, and as manag-

ers in federal, state and city offices.

In the private and nonprofit sec-

tor, CLU graduates serve as public

relations officers, college professors,

insurance executives and nonprofit

managers. Across the nation, MPPA

graduates are achieving heightened

levels of success every day as financial

administrators, museum directors, fed-

eral law enforcement officers, military

officers and judicial administrators.

EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT: PERSONAL AND PRACTICALDeveloping the talents to succeed

in today’s dynamic and global

economy takes more than a simple

understanding of business theory. It

takes applied experience and guid-

ance in a stimulating environment. At

CLU, you will find optimal class sizes

(capped at just 20 students) where

you will receive personal attention in a

dynamic classroom setting. Students’

life and professional experience is

integrated into classroom discussions,

making the learning environment

more dynamic for all. And, you can

choose to do a research project, in

lieu of the comprehensive exam or

thesis, at the end of the program.

ACCELERATED PROGRAMS: FLEXIBILITY & CONVENIENCEDesigned for working professionals

like you, CLU’s MPPA offers accelerated

programs with rolling terms so you

can begin any time and complete your

degree at your own pace. For added

convenience, courses are offered at

the Thousand Oaks main campus, as

well as our state-of-the art graduate

center in Oxnard.

to CLU’s technology network, wireless

campus and extensive research data-

bases. You can simply log on through

the MyCLU portal, our centralized Web

classes, view transcripts and grades,

and search our online library.

FAST-TRACK MPPAIf you are a current CLU undergradu-

ate student, you can earn your Master

of Public Policy and Administration

in an accelerated, fast-track format

by investing one year of additional

full-time study. At the graduate level,

full-time study is three classes per

term. You also have the option to

work and take classes on a part-time

basis, and graduate within two years.

Undergraduate students typically

apply during the fall semester of their

senior year. Once pre-admitted to

graduate study, you can enroll concur-

rently in one or two graduate classes

in the winter or spring terms while

finishing your undergraduate degree.

If you take graduate classes while

concurrently enrolled as a CLU under-

graduate, the cost of your graduate

classes can be included in your under-

graduate tuition (if you are under the

34 credits normally covered by the full

academic year tuition). MPPA classes

are offered in 11-week terms rather

than the undergraduate 15-week

semester length.

After earning your bachelor’s

degree in May, you would be fully

admitted to graduate standing—and

have a head start on your master’s!

PUBLICPOLICY andADMINISTRATION GRADUATE PROGRAMS

CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY

ARCHER CANELLA“The experience at CLU has exposed me to the daily routines of people I would not otherwise have met, and it gave me insight to their struggles to do good work whether in the public or private sector. Listening to the stories and ideas of other students allows my perspective to be more informed and the conclusions I draw to be more credible. So I take the time now to appreciate and understand the many sides of a story, and that gets me closer to seeing the bigger picture.”HOMETOWN: Mission Viejo, Calif.

PROFESSIONAL POSITION: Contracts Compliance Advisor

FAVORITE CLU CLASS: All of the courses had something unique to offer, but the course that always comes to mind as a favorite is Dr. Loh’s Health Care course. The course was a great example of the real-world experience that CLU offers.

MOST CHALLENGING ASSIGNMENT: Since each of his reading assignments represented a different angle on things, keeping up with all of Dr. Harwick’s assignments in his Ethics course was challenging but fruitful.

KEY TO KEEPING BALANCE IN LIFE: Being as much in the moment as pos-sible, without worrying or thinking about the many tasks that lie ahead.

HOBBIES: Family outings, playing guitar

THESIS: Healthcare Policy

LINDSEY WORKMANHOMETOWN: Simi Valley, Calif.

PROFESSIONAL POSITION: Law student and legal intern at Oklahoma City District Attorney’s Office in White Collar Crime

FAVORITE CLU CLASS: Law and Public Policy

“The MPPA classes effectively balanced the theoretical aspects of public policy and public administration with real-world application. The result was an education that gives me another analytical framework to approach difficult situations that I see every day in law school.”MOST CHALLENGING ASSIGNMENT: Drafting a California ballot initiative. We were required to think about the California ballot initiative process, the policy implications of our initiative, and how to present our initiative to the voters in the media. The assignment required me to synthesize the topics we read about in class and apply them to a topic I was passionate about.

KEY TO KEEPING BALANCE IN LIFE: Set aside an hour in the evening to decompress

HOBBIES: Basketball and moot court

FINANCIAL AIDAlthough the cost of a private college

education may seem higher, CLU’s

tuition is competitive with the California

State University system and lower than

most private universities. Even so, we

understand that paying for higher edu-

cation may seem prohibitive. For this

reason CLU offers a variety of financial

aid options, including scholarships,

grants, loans, veteran’s benefits and

on-campus employment opportuni-

ties. The majority of our students

take advantage of state and federal

resources, such as California grants,

Federal Pell grants and Federal Stafford

loans. Earning an advanced degree can

be one of the biggest investments you

make in yourself—and one that will

last a lifetime.

RESIDENCE HALLS: HOUSING FOR ADULTSIn this vibrant academic community,

graduate students find that CLU resi-

dential options fit their lives—embracing

each student’s privacy, independence

and commitment to learning. And the

value of living on campus extends far

beyond the monthly savings. You will

enjoy easy access to the many campus

amenities including a state-of-the-art

fitness center, Olympic-size swimming

pool, tennis courts, campus lectures,

concerts and sporting events, as well

as nearby hiking trails.

Campus housing options for

graduate students include Grace Hall.

Grace Hall features apartment-style

living in suites that include a kitchen,

common area, bathroom and several

one-person bedrooms. It also includes

study and conference rooms, a central

lounge and exterior patio. All units are

fully furnished and the price includes

utilities, cable, high speed wireless

Internet and phone.

Applications must be submitted

45 days prior to the term start. For
