Unit 128 25
Unit 128 territory includes all red areas on the
map plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
UNIT128
President's MessageI would like to welcome Charlene Predmest to the Unit 128 Board of Governors. Charlene will replace Linda Perlman, who resigned from the board, and finish out Linda's term (through the end of 2014.)
The board thanks Linda for her many years of service. Charlene will represent Area Two of Unit 128 (Glades, Highlands, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie Counties.).
The most important issue for Unit 128 to come before the board at the Phoenix NABC National Board meetings in November 2013 was Item 133-81: New Unit Formation, Shell Coast of Florida.
Motion moved that: The area along the Gulf Coast of Florida encompassing Venice in the north to Marco Island in the south to include Sarasota County not in Unit 102, Charlotte County, Lee County and Hendry and Collier counties west of CR29 be formed into a new Unit.
(At the Atlanta NABC National Board Meetings in July 2013, this item was deferred to the Phoenix Meetings with an Action Item as follows).
“Management will poll the members of the affected area through electronic balloting to those who have email. This poll will ask the members if they wish to form a new Unit and the results of this poll will be reported to the Governance Committee. This poll will allow tabulation by postal zip code.”
Results of the Straw Poll:
In September 2013, the ACBL conducted a straw poll via email of Members living within the identified area in the original motion. This poll was sent to a total of 2,087 members. (2,910 members are living in the affected areas). A total of 571 members responded. Of those who responded, 185 voted against the formation of a new Unit, 342 voted for the formation of a new Unit and 44 responded with no preference.
The National Board voted as follows: 1 in favor, 20 not in favor, and 4 abstaining.
A New Petition can be requested in 6 months from the date of the board meeting. The petition must include a beginning date for the first circulation of the petition. All signatures on the petition must be obtained within six months of this beginning date.
Action Item for the Dallas NABC 2014 Board meeting.
The Rules and Regulations pertaining to Unit Transfers and Boundary Changes will be reviewed with clearer rules pertaining to the actual petition in order to protect the integrity of the petition system and these amendments will be presented to the National Board for approval.

A CLASS OF 88!
Kathy Smith passing along her bridge enthusiasm to the 80 EasyBridge! players that showed up that particular Friday, with a little help from student Elaine Nevin
Sue Batt, consulting with a player during the mini-game they played in week three.
Sun City Center is a retirement area south of Tampa and north of Bradenton and Sarasota. Two bridge clubs thrive there. They run a successful sectional every year. Who knew that 88 active seniors would attend bridge classes at 8:30 am on Friday mornings? Well, Sue Batt and Kathy Smith, ACBL members for about five years, decided to offer Easybridge! at the Sun City Center Rec. Center and that's 22 tables of bridge players who truly do appear to have been bitten by the bridge-playing bug. Kathy is a recent Life Master, and by the time you read this, Sue will probably also attain LM status. They are two truly enthusiastic bridge players -- the first requirement for successful bridge teachers.
CLASS OF '16Matthew Weingarten learned bridge from pediatrician Mark Goldschmidt at the Clearwater Duplicate Bridge Club about eight years ago. At the Clearwater club's recent sectional, Matthew gave the I/N lectures! Matthew has been working hard at running a student bridge club at U. of Florida, also. Matthew is a sophomore majoring in computer science.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HAPPY GOLD-POINT DIGGINGUnit 128 is pleased to give you, for your playing enjoyment, the schedule for our 2014 regionals.
The Southeasterns are moving to a new location. We think you’ll like it! In fact, it’s an old location, but improved in several ways. The Bahia Mar, which is now a Doubletree by Hilton, is “directly on Ft. Lauderdale Beach”. Parking will be discounted and the big news is they have more playing space for us now. April 28-May 4
We join again with District 9 to play bridge two miles away from Busch Gardens Tampa. This time the play begins on Memorial Day. May 26-June 1
Celebrate July 4th with us. We’ll be at the Jacksonville Marriott, now with all their meeting space for our playing pleasure. June 30-July 6
Tried and true location, new dates. Play at the Palm Beach Gardens PGA Resort and Spa. August 18-24
Did you know that the Naples Regional is held at a Waldorf Astoria? This tournament boasts the shortest walk from your room to the elevator and shorter yet from the elevator to most of the playing space. The walk to the beach? Well, that’s much longer! September 15-21
Our final tournament of the year will feature elections for the Board of Governors. If you are interested, you have plenty of time to think about it between now and the deadline to file your candidacy, which is May 20th. Daytona Beach, if you’ve never seen it, you really should join us! November 3-9
