From Our Golf Pro...

Upon returning, you will find that Mike and his crew have been hard at work, and that the golf course is getting better and better every day. We are all looking forward to a great season. You will also see some new golf staff: Brevard native Sabrina Smith will be joining the Pro Shop staff, and Andy Bowden will be joining Bruce’s staff.

We have some new items in the golf shop this year, including Marc Joseph dress shoes for both men and women. Also be sure to check out our LTCC Pro Shop Webstore. This partnership with Full Turn Direct allows you to purchase products that are not available in the golf shop. If there is a particular article of clothing you like, or a particular size, you can order that item and it can be shipped to you directly. You can navigate to the webstore through our LTCC website.

Our Men’s Member-Member Tournament will be held on June 4 and 5, followed by our Men’s Toxaway Cup Matches on June 25 and 26. Sign-up sheets for both events will be posted in the hallway. This year’s Taylor-Made Demo Day will be held on Saturday, June 21 from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Ladies, be sure to sign up for our 18-Hole Partner Ringer Tournament on June 16 and 17 and our 9-Hole Member-Member Tournament on June 17. Coming up in July is the Ladies Member-Guest Tournament, with a theme of “Golf in the Wild.” Chairpersons Marcia Veit and Cynthia Kausch have been organizing a great event that is sure to be “wild” so find a partner and come join the fun! There will be a practice round on Monday, July 14 for you and your guest, followed by an after-round party in the Toxaway Room.

We are initiating a new net Match Play tournament with process of elimination for both men and women. Matches will start in mid-June, and each match will have a time period of two weeks to be completed. Sign up in the Pro Shop if you wish to participate: the men’s division will consist of the first 32 players to sign up, and the women’s division will be the first 16 players.

Golf Course Superintendent Update

The weather has certainly been a challenge the past few weeks. Just a month ago we had low temperatures in the low 20s followed by highs in the 80s with 20 mph winds just two weeks later. The turf has been a little confused, but it has definitely had a surge of growth in recent weeks.

Greens

The greens are finally starting to recover from the frigid temperatures that we received following aeration. The cold really shuts down any growth and the grass requires a couple of weeks of warm conditions to get growing again. Typically, we aggressively fertilize following aeration to encourage faster recovery, so there is always a growth surge that we have to deal with once the temperatures get warm enough. This growth surge can leave the greens looking and putting like they haven’t been mowed. We can combat this surge of growth with the application of growth regulators.

Unfortunately the cold days that we experienced April 15-17 shut down the growth and left the recovery several weeks behind. The holes have not been healed enough to start regulating the growth. The good news is that the greens have benefitted from the warmer than normal conditions and we can now start getting cutting heights down and growth under control. Everyone should start to see a big difference in greens speeds and firmness.

Tees, Fairways, and Roughs

Our initial soil test results performed last fall showed an extremely low pH (our pH was 5.5 or lower and a correct pH is around 6.2) and various areas of the golf course were low in both potassium and phosphorous. Phosphorous and potassium are essential to a healthy root system, and a low pH can tie up essential nutrients in the soil and make them unavailable to the plant.

We decided to take an aggressive approach towards correcting these deficiencies and thus improving the quality and performance of the turf. We applied over 100 tons of lime, as well as over 7 tons of phosphorous and 5 tons of potassium to resolve these issues.

Correcting the pH has made these nutrients available and created an incredible surge in growth and color on the tees, fairways, and roughs. We are working to get this growth under control, but are limited on the holes that had drainage performed as growth regulators can inhibit root growth in sod and these holes have a lot of sod.

We will also be making herbicide applications to the annual bluegrass in the fairways, so there may be some minor discoloration.

New for 2014: Divot Replacement

The golf course maintenance staff will be handling all sand replacement to divots on tees and #1 and #9 fairways. We will do this daily. Please make every effort to replace and fill your divots on the rest of the holes.

Please do not hesitate to email or call me with any questions or suggestions: [email protected] or (828) 966-9613

June is here and I can’t wait to see everyone having fun on the tennis courts!

Please sign up ASAP for our June socials. You don’t want to miss our Tennis Mixer/Cookout/Pro Doubles Exhibition on June 10 or our Friday Friends Doubles on June 27. Our annual Ladies Member-Guest Tournament will be held on June 21. This fun event for all levels will fill quickly, so sign up soon. If you need a partner, let us know and we will do our best to find one for you.

We have tennis clinics planned for all ages and all abilities, from Tiny Tots to a Tournament Team. We will have King of the Hill Doubles for levels 3.5 and up on Saturday afternoons, with 2 hours of doubles play in a “king of the hill” format. We will offer Cardio Tennis, which is a great workout, on Thursday and Saturday mornings, and our Ladies Day Clinic will be on Wednesday mornings. See our complete clinic schedule on the right.

I will return to Lake Toxaway in early June, and I will be ready and the best I’ve ever been. I needed to make a life-saving change, and I appreciate everyone’s kind words and support. I want to thank my best friend in the world, Ivo Dentchev, for all his help and support of both me and the Lake Toxaway Tennis Program. Ivo will be missed by the Lake Toxaway and Brevard communities in more ways than he can imagine, and I am truly blessed to have a friend as special as Ivo. We wish him well as he takes a new job in Florida.

I can’t wait to have the best season in my 20 years with all of my Lake Toxaway family. See you soon!

Don’t forget that June 9 is our first Feast with Friends, featuring Ron and Marilyn Follman’s son-in-law, Harry Farthing, who will share his adventures ascending Mount Everest. Please make your reservations and remember the “Friends” portion of the dinner. You inviting guests is what makes our CROQUETNUTS ranks grow. Our dinners have always been attended by more than 100 club members, so let’s keep the tradition going and growing.

The lawn will be closed until noon on Mondays for court maintenance. The courts will be configured for four ¾ courts on Monday and Tuesday and one full court and two ¾ courts on other days. (Things obviously change for tournament play during the season.) Please work hard to use the club reservation system any time you can.

Our first Golf Croquet Singles play of the season will begin on June 1. Join your fellow CROQUETNUTS each Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm for this enjoyable version of the game.

Susie Dickman said we still need people to sign up for snacks for Wine & Wickets; there will be a sign-up sheet at every Monday gathering.

If you have not already paid your 2014 dues, please do so. It is $25 for a family and $15 for an individual, and Fred Caswell is responsible for collecting the dues.

See you all on the courts. May your mallets be slow and low, and your swings follow through, and then the wickets will fly!

CROQUETCroquet Update...

Lake Toxaway is beginning to be covered in white again, and it is not snow: it is the annual influx of CROQUETNUTS flocking to our beautiful home.

The season got off to a rousing start with our first Wine & Wickets on May 19. Almost 30 players showed up, and Pam Weekes and Patty McDonough took home the prizes. Many continued on to the club for drinks, dinner, and answering the season-old question of “what did you do over the winter?”

Ted Mullett successfully put together our first Interclub with Wildcat Cliffs, and fun was had by all. Our only casualty was this “not so wise” writer who went to the wrong court not realizing it was a home match. Thank you to Les Avera for filling in until I was able to race back. The lunch at the club was enjoyed by all participants. Our next match is an away event at Highland Falls on June 26. Ted would love it if some of you would sign up for this match and/or any of the remaining two Interclubs.

From Our Fitness Director...Welcome to the summer of fitness! I believe we have one of the best line-ups of trainers, instructors, and fitness activities ever this year. I am honored to have several new staff join our team this year, and I am excited for you as members to benefit from their enthusiasm and expertise.

Gina Stano is one of our two new personal and group exercise trainers. She specializes in senior, baby boomer and orthopedic exercise and possesses an exuberance for group training. Gina comes to us with more than 18 years of experience in the fitness industry. She began making

some positive and dramatic changes in 1996 by losing 70 pounds through a diet and exercise program. She took her experience and became certified for personal and group exercise training. She currently trains at the St. Andrews Club in Boca Raton, FL, and owns and operates her own private training business. Gina will be teaching a brand-new class this year that you won’t want to miss: “Jitterbug, Core, and More!” This moving and grooving class has 20 minutes of aerobic dance exercise (with the Jitterbug, Swing, Charleston, and more), 20 minutes of Pilates-inspired strength and conditioning using bands, balls, and dumbbells, and 20 minutes of yoga-style core and flexibility training. Come try out a class on Wednesday, June 4 at 9:00am.

Group and personal trainer Adam Callis joins the team with a strong background in fitness and athleticism. Adam genuinely loves heath and fitness and cares about each client’s progress, goals and results. He describes himself as energetic and determined, executing his duties

punctually, ethically, morally, and humbly, as he aspires to help people make positive changes in their lives. Adam’s personal goal in fitness is to continually educate himself, and he is pursuing additional certifications with a desire to be a flexible and well-

FITNESS

rounded trainer. Adam hopes to earn his bachelor’s degree in exercise science, and his dream job is to train at the University of Georgia. He will be available for training on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7:00am and 11:00am as well as on some Saturdays.

Yoga instructor Noelle Platt has always been driven by enthusiasm to take chances and live in the now. She has experienced many occupations that range from dancing professionally to working with a district attorney’s office and owning a cafe. Her passion is to create a

strong sense of community and promote healing and happiness through yoga. Noelle has completed her 230-hour Yoga Teacher Training; she has studied at Asheville Yoga Center and has also spent time studying classical yoga and working at yoga ashrams and retreats in California and Colorado. Her training covered all types of yoga and encouraged her to teach an exploratory practice. Noelle currently teaches yoga in Cashiers and Brevard, and will be teaching her own speciality style of flow yoga at the Fitness Center through June.

Certified yoga instructor Terri Cooney is registered with the Yoga Alliance with 200 hours in Vinyasa Flow. Terri has been practicing yoga for eight years and has been instructing beginners through experienced patrons in asanas (postures) for three years, helping students deepen their

yoga practice through breath, self-awareness, and self-acceptance. Her professional background includes working as an orthopedic physician’s assistant for nearly 20 years. Her expertise is in holistic health and wellness, emphasizing the importance of taking time to calm the mind and body, and maintaining individual spiritual health. Terri loves biking, hiking, traveling, and walking her three baby girls (dogs) with her husband. Terri will be teaching our yoga classes from the end of June and through mid-August.

Please remember to make your reservations in our Main Dining Room for Twilight Buffet on Thursdays, a la carte dining on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, and brunch on Sundays.

If you haven’t been to the Greystone Inn’s Lakeside Dining Room lately, I want to encourage you to call the inn at (828) 966-4700 to make a reservation and enjoy a great dining experience there with its warm ambiance and beautiful view of the lake. Some of you have already met our summer intern, Zack Crum. Zack is a senior studying hospitality and tourism at Western Carolina University, where he is the student chapter president for the Club Managers Association of America.

“Lake Toxaway Country Club offers incredible opportunities for me to build my knowledge and gain experience in the daily operations of a large private country club. Under the outstanding leadership and guidance here, I will be receiving a hands-on education that will help me to achieve my goal of becoming a certified

general manager in the country club industry,” Zach said. “I look forward to continuing to meet and serve the outstanding members of Lake Toxaway Country Club, as well scoring more birdies and less bogies on the golf course!”

Please take a moment to welcome Zack to Lake Toxaway.
