Objects of the Club To promote ownership and appreciation of American motor vehicles.

To promote and provide owners and admirers with car shows, car rally’s and social events.

Hi Members.

I am hoping that the rain has now gone for the rest of the year and we can get on with planned events in fine weather. A couple of weekends I am hoping will be fine are for the Nitro cars at Springmount on Saturday the 6th and the following weekend for the swap meet.

Everything is ready for the swap meet and all the clubs involved are ready to go. At the last meeting we decided that we will show our cars in a club display similar to what TOTS do. The Restorers Club have also organised their members to show as a club as well. This means that when you go to park seek out the area assigned to the club. We have been unable to get the services of the musicians we have had in the past as they are now that popular that they will be on tour out of town. When they are really famous we will be able to say ‘yeah, they are the guys that started out at the swap meet in Cairns’. Fortunately, we have been able to engage the services of Cherry Divine and Two Jam Deadly who we are sure will be most entertaining. Many of you will know Cherry from the gig she did at the Kurrimine Beach Hop a few years back.

We had a really good turnout for out July 4th cruise, at one stage there were over 40 cars in the park. It was a great night for a cruise around town. Some members even got there early and had an American style car park cook up.

Members who attended the last meeting and stayed for the sports events had a fun day. Unfortunately, we are not that sporty and TOTS were overall winners on the day.

Our next meeting is on Sunday 31st July, usual place and time followed by a cruise down to South Cairns Sports Club (cnr Bicentennial Rd and Roberts Rd) Bentley Park for lunch.

See you there.

Bruce

Giggling Gertie’s Gut-busting Jokes! Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions stating

that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send

an inspector to interview them.

On the appointed day, the inspector turned up.

"Tell me about your staff," he asked Paddy.

"Well," said Paddy, "there's the farm hand, I pay him £240 a week, and he has a free cottage.

Then there's the housekeeper. She gets £190 a week, along with free board and lodging.

There's also the half-wit. He works a 16 hour day, does 90% of the work, earns about £25 a week along

with a bottle of whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife."

“That's disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit.”

"That'll be me then," said Paddy

At full time Paddy gets up to go home but finds that it is pelting down with rain.

"Stay the night here Paddy." says Mick.

"I'll go and make up a bed for you."

When Mick comes back down the stairs he finds Paddy drenched to the bone.

"What the hell happened to you?" Mick asks.

Paddy replies - "I went home for my pyjamas."

A New York attorney representing a wealthy art collector called and asked to speak to his

client, "Saul, I have some good news and, I have some bad news."

The art collector replied, "I've had an awful day; let's hear the good news first."

The lawyer said, "Well, I had a meeting with your wife today, and she informed me that

she invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15-20

million. I think she could be right."

Saul replied enthusiastically, "Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You've

just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?"

The lawyer replied, "The pictures are of you with your secretary."

AWESOME!

Now we know how they made all those aircraft Plexiglas 'domes' and windshields, etc. They use the same stuff to replace missing or damaged parts on B-17s and such today. Like where the bombardier sat, top and bottom turrets, etc.. Amazing for its day.

An extraordinary transparent car is set to fetch as much as USD$475,000 when it goes up for auction. The motor, dubbed the 'Ghost Car', is a Pontiac Deluxe Six which, bizarrely, has been covered in the see-through material Plexiglas.

Built in 1939 by General Motors and chemical company Rohm and Haas at a cost of $25,000, it was the first transparent full-sized car to be made in America.

Innovative: General Motors and chemical company Rohm and Haas built the vehicle for $25,000 - an astronomical price during the 1930s. Billed as a vision of the future, it was made for the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, where it became a sensation at General Motors' 'Highways and Horizons' pavilion; and it continues to cause a stir today. Just two were ever made and this model, which has a three-speed manual transmission, and is thought to be the last of its kind. It has clocked up just 86 miles in its lifetime; and now its set to go on sale for the first time since the early 1980s. It last sold for an undisclosed amount. American auctioneers RM expect it to sell for between $275,000 and $475,000 when it goes under the hammer on July 30.

One of a kind: The 1939 motor is a Pontiac Deluxe Six which has been covered in Plexiglas, developed just a few years earlier.

A BRIEF HISTORY ON THE PIONEERING PLEXIGLAS PONTIAC:

The collaboration between GM and Rohm & Haas was made for the 1930-1940 World's Fair in San Francisco.

At a cost of $25,000, it was the first transparent full-sized car to be made in America Two Ghost Cars were made but the 1939-1940 Pontiac Deluxe Six is the only won known

to survive. It toured the nation's dealerships and went on display at the Smithsonian until 1947,

and was subsequently owned by a series of Pennsylvania Pontiac dealers. This model has a three-speed transmission, a six-cylinder engine, coil spring

independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.

The car has clocked up just 86 miles in its lifetime.
