PRESIDENT’S REPORTPaul Di Iulio
Although the club didn’t have the on-field success that we were all looking for, I believe there were a lot of positives that can be taken out of 2019 which should hold us in good stead going forward. There were several significant changes both on and off the field throughout the year which brought about some challenges, however, also a number of opportunities.
WOLF BLASS COMMUNITY CENTRE
There is no doubt the most exciting project that is happening off-field is the construction of the Wolf Blass Community Centre. This new facility will be our home, our heart and our fortress. It’s been a long time coming, however, as you can see from the work that has occurred so far, it will be an amazing facility and one that we will all be very proud to call our own.
After years of procrastination and delays beyond our control the construction is well and truly underway with a completion date expected by the end of May 2020. The vision of creating a clubroom facility overlooking the ground is no longer a dream it’s becoming a reality. As the League is contracting in several areas this investment in our future will ensure that the Norwood Football Club will be at the forefront of all things football in South Australia.
Construction has taken a little longer than expected, however, as they say ‘good things come to those who wait’ and from a recent inspection of the works with The Premier, Steven Marshall and the man himself, Wolf Blass, there is no doubt we are creating something very special for many generations to come. There will be no better place to have a Coopers beer or a Barossa Boy wine and watch our beloved Redlegs than in the Wolf Blass Community Centre.
The actual construction works is far more than simply the new clubrooms, it incorporates a new Premiers Bar with direct access to the oval, new administration offices, a merchandise area, new home change rooms that are fully compliant for women’s football and new visitors change rooms under the western stand at the northern end of the ground. The project has extensively grown from initially being our new clubroom facility to ensuring that our future is secure at Coopers Stadium for at least the next 50 plus years providing our playing group with the best possible facilities to deliver the ultimate success.
There is no doubt Norwood Football Club and Coopers Stadium are iconic in the South Australian landscape, however, when we speak of iconic South Australians, there probably is none bigger than Wolf Blass. I would like to thank Wolf again for his significant personal financial contribution to the new clubrooms. As has been well publicised Wolf has donated $1 million to the build and in recognition of his very generous support the new facility will be named the

Wolf Blass Community Centre. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the other people who have assisted in raising funds for the new build to date and especially acknowledge and thank those that have donated significant amounts towards the new facility.
ON-FIELD
As a football club we had another successful season coming runner-up in the Stanley H. Lewis Memorial Trophy, awarded to the best performing club in the League, Reserves and Under 18 competition throughout the SANFL minor round.
The League team, although showing glimpses of its 2018 form, never reached their full potential in 2019 and bowed out of the finals race in the first semi-final. At the start of the year our expectations were high, however, after starting well we were never able to emulate the feats of the previous year, although I know it wasn’t for a lack of trying. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our head coach Jarrod Cotton. There is no doubt his commitment, dedication and love for Norwood has transcended throughout the entire club and ensured that we are one club with one vision of being the best we can be with the clear mandate of giving ourselves the best chance to win the premiership each and every year.
The Reserves team finished minor premiers and went on to win their grand final in magnificent fashion which was a fantastic reward for a very talented young group of players who will become very good league players over the next couple of years. I would like to congratulate Jed Spence on winning the Reserves Magarey Medal. Jed’s ability to continually win the football and create opportunities was one of the reasons the team had an amazingly successful year. I would also like to acknowledge Gavin Hughes and his assistant coaches on another successful year and congratulate him on winning the ultimate prize, the Reserves Grade premiership. This is a very close group of players who just really enjoy playing for the Norwood Football Club.
The Women’s team had another successful year finishing minor premiers and then suffered two narrow losses in their finals campaign. The Women’s team were so successful that at the SANFLW Best & Fairest award, Najwa Allen was crowned the best and fairest player in the League closely followed by her team-mates Monique Hollick and Hannah Dunn. I would like to congratulate all three women on their outstanding season and to especially acknowledge Nawja’s achievements as she also won the Norwood Women’s Best & Fairest award and Ellen Maple Medal for best on ground in the game against Sturt earlier in the season. I would also like to thank and acknowledge the efforts and contribution that Women’s coach Steve Symonds has made to the Norwood Football Club over the last three years. After three
very successful seasons, which included two grand final appearances and one premiership, he is leaving the club to take up a role as Senior Women’s coach at the Collingwood Football Club. We wish him all the best and thank him for his enormous contribution in establishing the Women’s football program at the Norwood Football Club.
As we look back over the year, you would generally agree that as a club we had a good year, however, we look forward to turning good years like this into very successful years with premiership successes in all competitions.
MICHAEL TAYLOR MEDAL
Brad McKenzie capped off his best year at the club being awarded the Michael Taylor Medal as our most brilliant player for the 2019 season. Brad had a magnificent and extremely consistent season and his heroics were no more prevalent than on the June long weekend at Noarlunga where he single-handedly repelled attack after attack after attack to secure a very hard-fought win for the club. I think you would all agree there was nothing more that he could have done in season 2019, so congratulations Brad on a fantastic season.
RETIRING CHAMPIONS
The end of the season also saw the retirement of four greats of the Norwood Football Club who between them have won 10 premierships, captained the club, won club Best & Fairest awards and represented South Australia. I would like to congratulate Jace Bode, Alex Georgiou, Brady Dawe and Ed Smart on their stellar careers and their absolute dedication and love for the club. For anyone who witnessed their retirement speeches at the Michael Taylor Medal presentation you will know how much this football club means to them. On behalf of the club I would like to say thank you Jace, Alex, Brady and Ed for the memories, and oh what great memories they were, and wish you all the best for the future.
BOARD
I would like to thank my fellow board members Ben Seekamp, Justin Staritski, Rick Neagle, Steve Arblaster and Marie Skrodzki for their support and ongoing commitment to the Norwood Football Club. Their determination and drive to continually want to make the club the best it can be has been amazing. This passionate group of people have been working tirelessly to ensure that we continue to strive towards our vision of being the leader in the SANFL. It’s been a challenging year both on and off the field, however, we have remained relentless in our pursuit of excellence to ensure we once again climb to the top of the SANFL.

I would also like to thank several independent committee members who have been working closely with the board, CEO and staff members to achieve our goal of being the leading club in the SANFL. So, a very big thank you to the;
• Football Committee led by Justin Staritski and club ‘legend’ Michael Taylor.
• The Build the Fort Fundraising Committee led by Andrew Killey, Daniel Gannon, Michael Pratt and Charmaine Binns.
• The Finance Committee led by Ben Seekamp and comprising Hamish Mould and Nick Green.
• The Nor East Management Committee led by Steve Arblaster and comprising Matt Binns and Glenn Cooper
• The Governance Committee led by Steve Arblaster and comprising Andrew Lamb and Richard O’Dea as their support and contribution has been very much appreciated by the board.
CEO
I would like to acknowledge and thank James Fantasia for the monumental amount of work he undertakes in pursuit of making the Norwood Football Club as successful as it can be. Whether it’s involvement in on-field matters, the Nor East or the development of the Wolf Blass Community Centre, his tireless efforts ensure that we always get the best possible outcome for the club. There is no doubt the build of the Wolf Blass Community Centre has consumed an enormous amount of his time and like a true professional he has just taken it in his stride and continued doing whatever is needed to be done for the club.
LIFE MEMBERS
In 2019 there were two wonderful people awarded Life Membership of the Norwood Football Club, Barry Solomon and George Phillips (posthumously). I would like to sincerely thank and acknowledge them for the enormous contribution they have made to the club over many years. Their contribution has been amazing, and it was very fitting that these two wonderful individuals have been awarded club Life Membership.
SPONSORS
I would like to acknowledge and thank all our sponsors who are an integral part of our club and whose commitment has been pivotal to our success over the years. Although there are far too may sponsors to mention, I would like to make special mention of the following major sponsors, whose support for our great club never ceases to amaze me.
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and thank Veolia and IWS (Integrated Waste Services) for their contribution as our major sponsors for 2019. Their joint sponsorship and commitment to the club has been fantastic and will continue to assist us to grow and become stronger over the next few years. I would personally like to thank Laurie Kozlovic and Joe Borrelli who have been key people in their organisations and who have continuously showed faith in the club and chosen to invest in our future.
I would like to thank Coopers Brewery whose current long-term sponsorship agreement will take their association with the club to almost 80 years. I am not sure that there would be any other sponsorship deal in Australia that has been going for 76 consecutive years.

I would like to extend a very big thank you to Paradise Motors for their amazing support and commitment to the club for over 10 years, which continues to grow and get stronger every year. Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank Trent and Jess Burge for their sponsorship through Barossa Boy Wines, ensuring that the Burge connection with the club will continue for many years to come.
It’s fantastic to see these family owned South Australian iconic businesses continuing to support the Norwood Football Club.
NORWOOD, PAYNEHAM & ST. PETERS COUNCIL
I would like to acknowledge and thank Mayor Robert Bria, his fellow Councillors, CEO Mario Barone and the staff of the NPSP Council for their support throughout the year in the building of the Wolf Blass Community Centre. As a club we look forward to working with them to revitalise the western end of The Parade, complete our new facility and generally enhance the match day experience at home games.
PATRON
I would also like to acknowledge and thank Club Patron, Joe Tripodi for his words of wisdom and his continual support in our quest to become the best we can be as a football club. The contribution that Joe has made, and continues to make, is amazing and we are very lucky to have him as a one-eyed Norwood supporter.
STAFF
To all the staff of the Norwood Football Club thank you for everything you do for this club on a day to day basis, the efforts and continued commitment of this group of people is very much appreciated. We may not have large numbers, however, our staff make an enormous impact and without their tirelessly efforts and endless enthusiasm we would not have been able to achieve what we have both on and off the field, especially in a very challenging year with the building of the new facility.
VOLUNTEERS
Lastly and not the least, I would like to thank all our volunteers. Volunteers are a very important part of any club and I think our volunteers are simply the best; they give their time tirelessly for the club and their ongoing efforts are simply amazing. So, to each volunteer of the club, on behalf of the board, I would like to say thank you!
IN CLOSING
It’s not easy to win premierships, however, as a board we are committed to doing whatever is necessary to ensure we have the best chance of bringing the Thomas Seymour Hill premiership cup back to The Parade next season. If we continue to live our values both on and off the field, I am sure that we will once again experience premiership success soon.

CEO’S REPORTJames Fantasia
THE 2019 SEASON
Carrying the disappointment of a grand final loss the year before has been a trap for many football clubs over the journey. I don’t think this was the case for our league team in 2019, however, our season was inconsistent and ultimately disappointing. It well may be a year that on reflection we let get away from us without wanting to be disrespectful to our opposition. On that note, I would like to congratulate the Glenelg Football Club on its premiership success in their first finals appearance since the introduction of the two Adelaide AFL clubs into the SANFL competition. On a positive note the Reserves premiership was a great reward for the young men who represented the club at this level. One of the more exciting prospects for the club is the quality of young players that will be presenting themselves for league honours over the next few years. Our Women’s team need to be congratulated on an outstanding season finishing minor premiers, unfortunately falling just short in their finals campaign. The U18 team showed some promising signs throughout the season and possess some exciting young talent despite finishing outside the final five. Our U16 team had a consistent season and finished playing
in the finals only to lose their semi-final encounter. Both under-age teams showed encouraging signs and can boast having talented players that we look forward to assisting in their continued development as they aspire to play senior football.
CLUB CHAMPION AWARD
Congratulations to all of our award winners for the 2019 season. I would like to recognise their individual performances, in particular our Club Champion and Michael Taylor Medallist, Brad McKenzie. Brad came to the club in 2017 after a stint with the North Melbourne Football Club in the AFL and has been a consistent contributor to the team since his arrival. A truly deserving achievement by Brad who has become a significant player at our club and across the competition. I would also like to congratulate our Women’s Club Champion, Najwa Allen. Najwa was also recognised as the SANFLW competition’s best player for the season, a wonderful achievement. Subsequently, Najwa has now been selected by the Adelaide Football Club for the 2020 AFLW season and we wish her every success playing at this level. Our Reserves best and fairest award was won

by Henry Crauford who was recruited from Mount Gambier and continues to develop as a big man and will no doubt be pushing for league selection next season. I would also like to congratulate Jed Spence who was the recipient of the 2019 SANFL Reserves Magarey Medal.
FIRST GAME AND MILESTONES
Congratulations go to Dominic Barry, Cody Szust and Corey Grove who represented the Norwood Football Club for the first time along with Dylan Stephens, Cameron Taheny, Brodie Carroll, Josh Richards and Cameron Ball who also played in their first league game. Special mention and congratulations go to Dylan Stephens, selected at pick No.5 by the Sydney Football Club and Cameron Taheny at pick No.50 by the Geelong Football Club at the 2019 AFL National Draft.
Special mention and congratulations are also extended to those players who reached SANFL game milestones through the season. Brady Dawe on his 200th game together with Matthew Panos, Lewis Johnson, and Ed Smart who all reached 100 game milestones. Brad McKenzie and Matthew Nunn also both reached their 50th game milestones during the season.
RETIREES
I would like to thank and recognise our retiring players for their great service and contribution to the Norwood Football Club. In particular, three-time premiership player and current captain Jace Bode, who has been an exceptional leader of our football club. Past captain and two-time premiership player Alex Georgiou for his outstanding contribution culminating in his 2017 Club Champion award. Three-time premiership player Brady Dawe one of our favourite sons, together with two-time premiership player Ed Smart who has captivated our supporters with his speed and explosive attack on the football. All these players will be sadly missed and we wish each of them every success in their respective future endeavours and again thank each of them for their contribution to our football club.
PARTNERSHIPS AND MEMBERSHIPS
Off-field the club has continued to grow and we are grateful for the support of our major sponsors, Veolia through Laurie Koziovic and IWS through Joe Borelli and their respective teams. Our many corporate partners who continue to support our great club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of our key partners including the Coopers family, in particular, Tim and Glen Cooper, Cam Pearce and Brent Felice from Coopers Brewery, Grant, Helen, Trent and Jessica Burge from Barossa Boy Wines, Colin Kuchel and his team at Australian Outdoor Living, Travel Associates through Andrew Boyce and his team and Jeff Neale and the team at Paradise Motors Mazda. I also want to acknowledge
every one of our other loyal sponsors, many of whom have been with us for years if not decades, a fact that shines a positive reflection on the quality of their involvement, and the respect in which our club is held in the corporate community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal members and their unwavering support throughout the year. The club once again boosted membership numbers to over 3000, a target that we are looking to grow into the future. Club membership play’s such an enormous part in the success of any club and we again encourage your ongoing support in 2020.
STAFF, COMMITTEES AND VOLUNTEERS
A successful football club requires the ongoing support of many people in many different capacities and our club is extremely fortunate to have such a committed group of people across a broad area of responsibilities. I would like to thank our many volunteers, committee members, sponsors, match day staff, members, supporters, coaches and players for their ongoing support and commitment to our wonderful club. In particular those members of the finance committee, governance committee, Nor East advisory committee, players care and wellbeing committee, match committee, past players and officials committee, history committee, hall of fame committee and the newly appointed function centre management committee. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our loyal, hardworking and committed staff for their tireless efforts throughout the year. Our football department lead by Jarrod Cotton (senior coach) Mark Ross (football operations manager) Rick Shrowder (talent manager) Ben Mesisca (development coordinator) and Gavin Goodfellow (property manager). I would also like to thank our many part-time workers who make your visit to Coopers Stadium enjoyable on match days including our canteen, bar and gate staff, together with the services of Weslo Security, Adelaide Green Clean and St. John Ambulance.
A big thank you to our many volunteers, coaches and support staff at every level for their unwavering support, effort and commitment to the Norwood Football Club. I would like to offer a special mention to Dean and Margaret Southwood who once again have generously supported our football program and our playing group as they have done so for many years.
OUR HORIZONS
We will continue to focus on our membership drive and can finally be excited about the oval facilities redevelopment being completed in 2020. While extended later than expected, the opening of the new community facility and upgraded change rooms will still impact on the coming season with some compromises still in play until the building work is completed and formally handed over. It is important that our members and supporters are aware of the impact the works will have for everyone visiting or playing at Coopers Stadium early next season. Albeit a much shorter impact, the latter part of the season will see the completion of all the new development work and be available for all of us to enjoy.
We certainly enjoy a strong relationship with the Norwood, Payneham and St. Peters Council, and I would like to thank Mayor Robert Bria, his elected Council members and CEO Mario Barone and his team for their ongoing support, in particular their assistance in the ‘Build the Fort’ project. I would also like to once again acknowledge the support of the SANFL, Federal Government, Wolf Blass, the late Bill Cooper and all those that have already donated or pledged to support the ‘Build the Fort’ project. I encourage you all to support the project and purchase a picket, get your membership, and be on board for an exciting 2020 season.
IN REFLECTION - VALE

FOOTBALL OPERATIONS REPORTMark Ross
Our 2019 season was filled with brilliance, excitement, entertainment, expectation, disappointment and at times frustration. It all sounds like a pretty standard football year for the average football supporter when following their team.
After finishing 2018 playing in the grand final it would be fair to say our expectations going into 2019 were incredibly high. To finish fourth is obviously not a disgrace but it is also not accepted as being where we as a club want to be.
Senior Coach Jarrod Cotton in his post season analysis of the year was quick to find the areas where the players, coaches and club needed to improve, and he has left no stone unturned in the pursuit of excellence moving into 2020.
As a club though we must also acknowledge what we did do well as there were many highlights throughout the season. We had fantastic victories against Sturt both at home and later in the season at Unley Oval. We had some incredibly hard-fought gutsy victories against Glenelg, South Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Central District, while also playing some high standard football against West Adelaide and North Adelaide.
Although we were very disappointed to finish the way we did, we took a lot of learning away from not only the semi-final loss to the Adelaide ‘Crows’ but from the whole season.
The 2019 season saw opportunities provided to several men who we see as vital to Norwood’s future. Brodie Carroll, Cody Szust, Josh Richards and Cam Ball are players with undoubted talent who received a taste of senior football and are sure to have a big impact next season and beyond.
Our Reserves team under the tutelage of Gavin Hughes played some outstanding football and took out the premiership in convincing fashion against the Woodville West Torrens Football Club. During the season we witnessed the emergence of many talented youngsters who had progressed from Jimmy Allan’s 2018 U18 team, to have a huge impact during the season and they will be significant future players for the club.
PLAYER DEPARTURES
At the conclusion of the 2019 season the following players have departed the Norwood Football Club.
Premiership players Brady Dawe, Jace Bode, Alex Georgiou and Ed Smart all decided to retire after distinguished careers with our great club. Rebounding defender Tom Forster moved to Victoria to further his studies while Reserves premiership player Lochie Charlton has decided to play local football in 2020.
REDLEGSNORWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL REPORT || 2019
15 |
Josh Miller and Mitch Carter have also decided that the time required to train and play senior football is no longer a huge desire, while small forward Chris Olsson is seeking more senior game time at the Central District Football Club.
A handful of players, namely Tom Charlton, Adam Waters, Kyle Olds, Charlie Hay, Corey Di Stefano, Hugo Fahlbusch-Moore and Jonny Wilson all showed tremendous dedication during the 2019 season and will no longer be with us for various reasons next season.
We wish all these young men well, thank them for their contribution and look forward to seeing them at Norwood games in the future.
Congratulations must also go to Dylan Stephens (Sydney) and Cam Taheny (Geelong) for being selected at the 2019 AFL National Draft. We look forward to watching them perform on the big stage over the next few seasons after making such a huge impact during their time at our club.
CLUB CHAMPION
Brad McKenzie had an outstanding season playing in defence and was rightly rewarded by winning his first Club Champion award on presentation night. Brad’s ability to consistently win the 50/50 contest, defend above his playing weight at times and consistently use the ball well with his elite kick was a major reason we were a force to be reckoned with.
Sam Baulderstone’s achievement to finish runner-up after a stellar season once again typified his importance to our team as he continually dominated the centre square, clearances and stoppages around the ground which in turn helped bring his team-mates into the game.
NORWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB - SANFLW
Our SANFL Women were easily the best team during the minor round, losing only one game and finishing minor premiers. Unfortunately, they were unable to play to their best football during the major round and succumbed to both South Adelaide and North Adelaide teams in both finals games.
Credit must go to our outgoing senior women’s coach Steve Symonds for the work he has undertaken with our women over his three-year term at the club. Steve walks away being the SANFLW inaugural women’s premiership coach and has no doubt left a huge impression on our club at all levels. We wish Steve all the very best in his new role as the Collingwood Football Club AFLW head coach.
Congratulations must also be given to Najwa Allen in winning our Club Champion award. In her first season of SANFLW football Najwa showed what a bright future she has and was rightly rewarded for her efforts being drafted into the AFLW competition for the 2020 season.
2020 SEASON
The 2020 season will all be about giving the club the best possible opportunity to finish in the top half of the premiership table at the end of the minor round and to then go on and win the premiership.
We have recruited some very talented players we believe will add strength to our squad. Star Adelaide ‘Crows’ midfielder Richard Douglas, Brisbane ‘Lion’ midfielder Ryan Bastinac and former Shepparton and Geelong VFL player Nik Rokahr will no doubt supply our forward line with many quality entries throughout the year.
Joining these players at The Parade are South Adelaide and former Port Adelaide utility Emmanuel Irra, Mount Compass key forward and goal kicking machine Tom Pinyon and former South Adelaide athletic key forward Codey Ellison.
We welcome all of them to Norwood and wish them well in the season ahead.
In closing, I wish to thank all our coaches, staff and volunteers for their outstanding efforts during the 2019 season.
I also thank our sponsors, supporters and members for their ongoing loyal support and look forward to seeing you all next season.
Season 2020 cannot come quick enough as we once again strive towards the ultimate success.

TALENT MANAGER’S REPORTRick Shrowder
Season 2019 seems to have come and gone in the blink of an eye. As everyone is aware it is an exciting time with the building works having started on new change rooms, office spaces, medical rooms and function centre. As exciting as this is, it has certainly created some challenging times for everyone involved including all of the staff, parents and players involved in under-age programs at the club. I’d like to say a big thank you to all of the parents in particular that have been patient and understanding this year with no parking available and some last minute changes due to building works.
This year the club has proudly supported the development of male and female players through a total of 12 different squads. These have been our U13, U14, U15 Boys Development Squads, U15 and U17 Girls Development Squads, U16 and U18 Male Squads, U15 and U17 Eyre Peninsula Squads, Metro and EP Country Academies and the lads in the visiting Maralinga/Tjarutja team. All of these squads have had varying levels of on-field success but more importantly have continued to develop their footy skills in the red and blue jumper.
All of our squads are fortunate to have fantastic coaches and support staff that give their time, energy and experience to ensure our players can learn, improve and
play in the best environment possible. I’d like to thank the following people some of whom have had multiple roles this year, Alex Forster (U13s Coach), David Payne, Devin Payne, Steven Canala (U14s Coaches), Michael Niedzwiecki, Riley Atkinson, Corey Di Stefano, Lachlan Pascoe (U15s Coaches), Chris O’Connor, Dave Bartel, Tyson Currie, Brock Kennedy, Bek McMahon (U16s Coaches), James Allan, Luke McCarthy, Tim McMahon, Sam Baulderstone, Alex Forster, Tom Charlton (U18s Coaches), Steve Symonds (Metro Academy Coach), Alison Ferrall, Cassie Tsoumbris, Rhi Busch (Girls U17s Coaches), Elisha Gallagher (Girls U15s Coach), Richard Horgan, Danny Horgan, Michael Harris, Michael Curtis (EP U15s Coaches), Roger Puckridge, Glenn Dunn, Paul Warmington, Robert Shirley (EP U17s Coaches), Andrew Taheny (EP Football), Colin Cairns, Paul Homann, Mike McAveny, Thomas Tiver, Tushar Vyas, Mark Vincent, Gavin Goodfellow, Victor Thatch, Shane Ellul (Team Managers, Strength & Conditioning, Timekeepers, Bus drivers, Scorers), Nick Cubitt, Karli Wise, Alison Harvey, Suzy Pengan, Kerry Bungey, Gayl Sutton, Kira Eliseo, Akshaya Suryakant, Ashutosh Londhe, Brooke Leah, Kerry-Anne Casanova, Chris Gerrie (Medical officers and Trainers).
Each year it is important to acknowledge team as well as individual achievements. This season our U16s finished 4th

and experienced finals again and our U18s finished 6th. Both teams had some fantastic wins but ultimately not enough of them to finish as high as players and coaches would have liked. Importantly though, the future looks bright with some talented young footballers progressing through the system. Unfortunately, our U15s lost in the Grand Final of the SANFL Intra State Championships but did very well to get there after some solid matches during that week.
Congratulations to Dylan Stephens and Cameron Taheny who proudly represented South Australia in the National Championships as well as Cooper Murley and Matthew Dnistriansky in the U16s State Squad, Bella Smith in the U18s Girls State Squad and Alana Lishmund, Hayley Taheny, Sachi Syme in the Girls U16s Squads. Well done to all of these players.
In addition to the people listed above, I’d like to thank and acknowledge all of the club staff that make it possible for our squads to train and play at the club each week. At various times all of these people contribute to the under-age football programs, Angeline Solari, Joseph Marciano, Natasha Maios, Peggy Burns, Chris Branson, Mark Ross, James Fantasia, Jarrod Cotton, Ben Mesisca, Justin Staritski, Rowley Pengilly, Barry Solomon, David Solari, Michelle Dunsmore.
To all of the parents, guardians and families that support our programs through the support they give to their kids - thank you.
To the club sponsors that enable us to put development programs together for our young players - thank you.
As we now look toward the 2020 season, I’d like to thank James Allan who has coached our U18s for the last two years and is now assisting Jarrod Cotton with the senior squad. The club is fortunate to have someone of James’ experience and understanding of the game continuing to develop its players. I’d also like to congratulate Chris O’Connor who now takes over as the U18s Head Coach and welcome Craig Roberts to the club as our new U16s Head Coach. Both coaches and their squads have enjoyed great starts to the pre-season and early observations of the way all players, staff and coaches have attacked it gives me great confidence that the club has a very bright future.

FINANCE REPORTBen Seekamp
On behalf of the board and management I have great pleasure in presenting the financial report of the club for the year ended 31 October 2019.
FINANCIAL RESULTS
The 2019 financial year result to be reported by the club is a net surplus of $315,744.
The surplus includes the SANFL Land Divestment proceeds of $275,000 and further generous donations to the Build the Fort fund of $476,119 with expenses of $106,433 relating to Build the Fort.
The financial statements presented for this year are the first full year under the new structure, which had to be implemented, to ensure we continued to be a not-for-profit organisation. It is difficult to compare against the previous year due to the new arrangement commencing from 1st July 2018. THE NORWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB INCORPORATED
Attendances at Coopers Stadium decreased slightly on 2018 being down 6%, with crowds against Glenelg, Sturt and Port not reaching levels we expect. Match day profit for the season was $90,812 with the best return being the game against Sturt resulting in a profit of $27,077 with a
crowd of 4,001. The disruption experienced as we build the Wolf Blass Community Centre has had an impact on attendance but the exciting positive impact this will have on match day experience and crowds is something we look forward to. On field performance for the minor round was below expectations, and despite the strong start to the season we saw a small decline in total membership. We believe that we provided a better product, and this resulted in an overall increase in membership return. A further review of our memberships and continued improvements in seeking new members and ensuring existing members renew should see us exceed membership levels in 2019. Having a wonderful members facility completed in 2020 is a terrific benefit for our members and something prospective members have been looking for. Sponsorship had some exciting improvements, the level we achieved with the Big LED Screen. Reaching almost $100k was a great result and we believe it can be better, whilst also providing those at the game with some terrific content. The sale of corporate boxes exceeded budget as did player sponsors, digital sponsorship but disappointingly we lost our Eyre Peninsula (EP) partner. Our commitment to the EP is fantastic and we are sure that we can attract a new partner for 2020.
Norwood Football Club Merchandise Clearance Sale.

We had two AFLW games in February 2019 resulting in some good food and beverage trade from a combined crowd of 12,263. We continue to monitor the performance of these games to ensure they are worth the effort required to host them. Again, a new facility at Coopers Stadium gives us more options to entertain and host functions.Merchandise sales were slightly below budget, going deep into finals is crucial to sales and to exceed budget.
THE REDLEGS CLUB INCORPORATED
Gaming is a challenging industry and we are working very hard to meet and exceed our expectations of our venue. We have installed numerous new machines, upgraded TV facilities, and other general improvements. The feedback from customers is fantastic so we know we are on the right track. Gaming revenue was below budget, but we have set the budget at similar levels to 2019 and expect that our machine replacement plan will help us achieve this. We continue to market, improve the facility and make changes to benefit the operation.
The sale of food and beverage on game day was a challenge due to the construction of the Wolf Blass Community Centre, something we expected and must deal with as we improve the facilities at Coopers Stadium.
137 THE PARADE TRUST, 581 NORTH EAST TRUST AND 583 NORTH EAST TRUST
The Net result of the Trusts was a surplus of $315,300. We were successful in raising the rent of our commercial properties being up over $10,000 on budget. Being able to maximise our return on investment is important and something we spent time on during the year. The surplus is due to the rent collected on the Nor East and rent from the tenants at 581 North East Road less interest on commercial bills, sundry property maintenance, rates and taxes and other minor sundry items. The surplus is distributed to the Norwood Football Club.
SUMMARY
The Net result of the above entities was a surplus of $315,744. If we add back depreciation and write offs ($369,854) and remove the net result of Build the Fort activities ($369,686), the result is a surplus of $315,912.

NORWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY COMMITTEEWynton Heading Chairman
This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Norwood Football Club History Committee which held its first meeting in October 2009 under the chairmanship of Michael Coligan. The committee’s brief was to preserve and manage the history of the Norwood Football Club from 1878 and the Norwood Oval from 1901.
Since then the group has met regularly to collate, catalogue and store the extensive range of documents, objects and photographs that were discovered in various rooms and offices around the Norwood Oval. Over the years the brief has expanded to include a range of activities such as making recommendations to the club Board on Hall of Fame inductees, conducting tours of the Norwood Oval, research on past players and the production of three publications; 1878 Norwood’s First Year, Norwood Men Who Served and 140 Years of the Red and the Blue.
The formation of the committee encouraged many past players and their families, along with club members and supporters to donate material knowing that the items would be properly curated and preserved. This year items were received from 16 donors making a total of 208 donors who have presented the club with an extensive array of publications, badges, awards, guernseys, photographs and ephemera that reflect the long and colourful history of the club and the Norwood Oval.
Several significant objects were added to the collection this year. The committee was pleased to acquire the gold life member’s badge awarded to Syd Ackland in 1931. Ackland played in 134 games from 1922 to 1931 including three premierships, was senior coach from 1935 to 1937 and is a Hall of Fame inductee and a member of the Team of the Century.
The club also acquired a SANFL Life Member certificate awarded to Stanley H. Lewis in 1944. The beautiful, hand coloured certificate was signed by John Joseph Woods and Thomas Seymour Hill. T.S. Hill was the Norwood Football Club secretary/general manager from 1926 until 1935 before taking on the same role for the SANFL. He held this position until 1963, finishing with a total of 37 years of service to the game. He is a Norwood and SANFL Life Member and an inductee of the Norwood, South Australian Football and Australian Football halls of fame. J.J. Woods was a six times premiership player, Norwood’s first coach and first secretary, treasurer and SANFL delegate. Stanley H. Lewis was SANFL chairman from 1950 to 1961 and the Stanley H. Lewis Memorial Trophy is awarded each season to the best performed club across three grades of the competition. SANFL Life Member certificate awarded to Stanley H. Lewis in 1944.

A 1984 grand final football was presented to the club by former field umpire John Hylton who, along with Laurie Argent, officiated in Norwood’s history making win over Port Adelaide.
Two significant online resources are utilized by the group to record historical data. Since 2009, catalogue records for items have been added to a database sponsored and supported by the AFL. While a number of AFL clubs use the database, Norwood is currently the only local club using the online resource along with the SANFL History Centre. A major upgrade of the software was undertaken this year and following negotiations with the SANFL, the AFL has agreed to continue sponsoring the database to support the preservation of the game’s history at a local and national level. It is to be hoped that other SANFL clubs will start to make use of the database.
This year 90 items were catalogued and added to the collection bringing the total number of club records on the database to 3,495 while several thousand photographs still await cataloguing. Images for 75 items were added to the database making a total of 1,770 images.
The other online resource is the Redlegs Museum website which was established in 2013 and includes a database containing the playing records of the 1479 men and 52 women who have represented the club at senior level. The website has recently been upgraded and re-designed by its creator, former Norwood captain, Anthony Harvey. Amongst a number of improvements, the upgrade will re-format screen displays automatically for mobiles and tablets, opening up the website to a wider range of internet users.
Biographical profiles for 830 senior players have been written and added to the Redlegs Museum and, of the 1479 players listed, 1345 portrait photographs have been attached to their records. While most of the images are taken from team photos many were supplied by family members or obtained from a variety of sources such as newspapers, school photos or war service sites.
Research into the lives of late 19th and early 20th century players has revealed a number of names to be added to the club’s honour roll of war veterans. Players who served during the Boer War (1899-1902) include: G.E. Blackmore, A.F. Coulls, A.M. McAloney, C.G. Sabine and J. Way. The following names have been added to the club’s list of World War One veterans: V. Cave, H. Chapman, H. Gabriel, H.G. Healey, E.A. McNamara, W. Noal, and C. Thomas. James Way, it was discovered, served in the Boer War and World War One while Edgar C. Johnson served in both world wars. The profiles of all of these men can be read on the Redlegs Museum website.
The process of digitising the club’s collection of photographs continued and 2,600 images were produced this year making a total of 10,194 digital images including the small photos of players on the website. Digital copies of photographs allow the originals to be protected and preserved and prints that have suffered damage over the years can be restored.
The Norwood Football Club display at the Adelaide Oval was updated and revamped with new items from the club’s collection. The display, along with those from other SANFL clubs, can be viewed on Level Two of the Riverbank Stand. The group continued to collaborate with Chris Halbert and the SANFL History Centre and during the year History Committee members attended and presented reports at meetings of historians from the other clubs.
The History Committee acknowledges the support of the club’s office and ground staff and we thank Denise Schumann for making a room at the St. Peters Cultural History Centre available for meetings. The archive collection is professionally secured off-site, thanks to the ongoing generosity of Dawn and John Eastwood, directors of Adelaide’s Under Storage Specialists, U-Store-It, and Wally Miller continues to provide assistance with his extensive knowledge of the history of the club and its players and officials.

2019 LIFE MEMBERS
Barry Solomon
George Phillips
Barry’s involvement with the Club expands over 30 years, commencing in April 1989 and whilst this in itself is very significant, it is the manner in which Barry has served and shared of himself, his quality of character and the numerous times he has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Barry is highly regarded by our past and present staff, players and officials and we are delighted in awarding him with NFC Life membership.
George made a significant contribution to the Norwood Football Club that expanded over 22 years, between 1971 and 1992 as a member of the support team. In particular a colour steward for our senior team. George’s contribution was more than just 22 years of service it was the manner in which George served and shared of himself, his quality of character and how highly he was regarded by all of those players and officials particularly at the time.

EVENTS Joseph Marciano
The Norwood Football Club once again held several significant events in 2019.
Our first major event was our Guernsey Presentation Night and Season Launch at the Osmond Terrace Function Centre. Our 2019 player sponsors presented guernsey’s to their nominated player for the season. A big thank you to Ruth Scaife and the kind staff at the Norwood Hotel for their hospitality to our players, partners and staff.
The Pullman Adelaide was the venue for our ‘Red and Blue’ Ball which provided an opportunity for our players, staff, board, volunteers and partners to come together for a fun event. The night provided all with a reason to dress up and let their hair down. Once again it was a fantastic night had by all. A big thanks to Coopers and Barossa Boy for providing the beverages for the evening as well as the band ‘Chunky Custard’ for providing the entertainment. Match day lunches and dinners were held at both the Norwood Hotel and Martini Ristorante. With the help of our proud sponsors Coopers Brewery, Barossa Boy Wines and Coca-Cola, the pre-match functions were enjoyed by many, before watching the red and blue go into battle. Throughout the year we also held events for members of our Captains
Club and Legends Club. Our Captains Club enjoyed a BBQ and drinks at training, and before the elimination final against Sturt, enjoyed a cocktail event at the Cathedral Hotel. Our Legends Club enjoyed a wine tasting experience in the cellar at the National Wine Centre as well as a cocktail event at the Cathedral Hotel before the elimination final. Finally, we finished off the 2019 schedule of events with our Club Champion presentation night at the National Wine Centre. A big thank you once again to Barossa Boy and Coopers Brewery for providing the beverages at the function. The Norwood Football Club would like to thank Big Screen Video for the operation of our super screen at Coopers Stadium.
The Norwood Football Club in 2019 also hosted an event named, The Great Debate (Beer vs Wine) a fundraiser conducted by the Build the Fort Committee at the National Wine Centre when 200 people attended. The Beer debate team comprised Glen Cooper, Tom Hannah and Les Burdett while the Wine debate team was led by Wolf Blass together with Grant Burge and Chester Osborn. The day was enjoyed by all and the Beer team won the day. A big thank you must go to all those involved, including the debate teams and the kind staff at the National Wine Centre.

WALLY MILLER’S INDUCTION AS AN AFL LIFE MEMBERIn June the club hosted a special lunch in honour of club Legend Wally Miller at which he was inducted as an AFL Life Member. Few individuals have helped shape the Norwood Football Club more than Walter Hillary Miller OAM. His contribution, firstly as a player, and then as an administrator has been immense. The day began with lunch at the Norwood Hotel’s Osmond Terrace Function Centre where AFL administrator Patrick Keane presented Wally with his Life Membership certificate. The room was filled with a host of Norwood past players, officials and friends who came together to celebrate Wally’s achievements and his remarkable contribution to the club.
