    Introduction:

Rotaract is the youth arm of Rotary International and as such is an international

service organization aimed at promoting fellowship and personal development through

community service. With a diverse range of charitable programmes, an extensive role

supporting other community services and significant international reach of 200,000

members in 9100 clubs located in over 171 countries, Rotaract is an organization with a

    profound impact on the world.

The history of the UOW Rotaract Club dates back to a group of students in 2001

wanting to affect positive change locally and globally. UOW Rotaract received its charter

from Rotary International and became an official university club in 2002. Following a poor

year in 2009-10 the UOW Rotaract club began the process of rebuilding. Since 2010 we have

seen a period of growth and stability, recently emerging from its 11th

    birthday recently with

unprecedented strength in members, recognition and relationships.

It is the view of the current UOW Rotaract executive that our significant contribution

to student life at the University of Wollongong has distinguished us as the most outstanding

At time of writing the UOW Rotaract Club has a core group of 15 members and

though affected by a string of midyear graduations the club continues to see spikes andconstant interest. Beyond this core group the UOW Rotaract club can draw on several more

peripheral members and has a potential membership group nearer to 30 people. One of

the most promising areas of growth over 2013 for UOW Rotaract has been on social media.

The club has experienced a massive surge of activity on Facebook we began the year at

around 180 likes and as of September we have 270. This is the biggest growth over the

course of a year since the founding of the page. In addition to our official page a closed

Facebook group for members is also operated which now has 91 members, adding

approximately 50 people over the course of the year. This group is crucial to the logistics of

organising club events ranging from fundraising to social affairs.

    Key events:

    Kindifarm

Clubs Day is always a busy marketplace and standing

out from the various other societies is a constant

challenge, it is a perfect real world example of

cutting through the noise to gain attention. Past

President Darren Koppel had a brilliant idea to

achieve this, the idea is simple. Go big. Kindifarm

provide petting Zoo hire for all occasions and they

did not disappoint. The UOW Rotaract club tied the

presence of the Animals on the campus into on-

going efforts and support for the Laskar Nepal

program which is a not-for-profit working for the promotion and protection of the

livelihood, betterment and advancement of women, health, environment, social justice

and development,1 a key means of raising money for these efforts is through the income

generated via goat farming, hence the petting zoo. During the day members of the UOW

The event was extremely successful and all the images from the event can be viewed

through an image gallery on the UOW Rotaract Clubs Facebook Page which can be foundhere. These led to a spike in the clubs reach and flurry of interest in the page, which was

    helpful for further events.

    Biggest Morning Tea:

This year, the UOW Rotaract club

    was approached by the Wellbeing

    Centre to co-host the Cancer

Councils Biggest Morning Tea. It was

    a successful event overall, despite

being held near the end of semester

when student attendance was at a

    minimum. Working primarily with

saying they were extremely satisfied with the event. The primary medium used to raise

awareness of the event (and the UOW Rotaract Club) was Social media and primarilyFacebook. Using Facebooks metrics the event had two distinct peaks where the page reach

shot up to 1,238 and 1,421 on the 5th

    and 7th

of July respectively. In the lead up the usual

peak reach was 250-320. These spikes are a fivefold increase on normal levels. We also had

significant traffic on theevent page wall.

Further recognition for Humans vs. Zombies came in the form of strong media

coverage (articles attached in the appendix) which included three articles in the Illawarra

Mercury, a mention in the WIN News bulletin and a blog post on Rotary Internationals

official End Polio Now Blog. This blog post was shared onsocial mediaand at time of writing

has 347 likes and 115 shares including mentions by the officialRotaract PageandThe End ofPoliowhich tagged the official University of Wollongong page.

The event was also well supported by local politicians and we were extremely

pleased to have Keira MP Ryan Park come and officially open the event. We have also had

many quotes from the office of the Wollongong Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbury, who

    Halloween Party:

Since 2010 the UOW Rotaract club has had a close working relationship with the

UOW Unibar, this relationship has continued to strengthen over the course of 2013. The

most recent development to occur in the relationship between the UOW Unibar and the

UOW Rotaract club is our role in 2013s Halloween party where Rotaract will have full

control over a haunted house. We will be creating this from scratch and look forward to the

exciting challenge. The project proves to be another prominent example of what the UOW

Rotaract club is capable in size and scope. Keeping with the theme of go big the hau nted

house will be another visible event to help us stand out as an eminent club on campus. It is

also another great example of the fantastic opportunities the clubs program provides for the

students of UOW and is thought will generate interest in the Rotaract club.

    Mental Health First Aid:

UOW Rotaract is currently implementing a program in collaboration with Headspace

Wollongong and SHARP to provide much needed mental health support and training to the

UOW student population. UOW Rotaract currently has a proposal being considered by the

Academic Registrars division to access funding to train two permanent staff members to

Club Size, Growth Rate and Membership Statistics:

Unfortunately the UOW Rotaract Club has been hit hard by a string of midyear

graduations, so whilst the club hasnt grown drastically, we have managed to maintain a

core group of approximately 15 members and 21 active club members. Many of this core

group are reasonably new to the club and many members display great promise. The

current executive of the Club (with the exception of President Aidan Simmons) joined the

UOW Rotaract Club at the start of the session, to have such new members take on such a

strong role in the executive is a great achievement and a testament to the integrity of the

    club.

At the start of 2013 the UOW Rotaract Club had 22 members. Since then we have

had 9 members move on to graduate during July representing a loss of approximately 40%

of the club. Whilst the loss of so many members would normally cripple most clubs due to

our strong presence on Campus UOW Rotaract has managed to survive and over the course

of the year have recruited 8 new members. To have a net loss of just one member at the

end of the year is nothing short of amazing.

As alluded to earlier in this report, one of the most significant growth areas for the

UOW Rotaract club has been on social media, particularly Facebook. The club hasexperienced a growth rate of approximately 150% in terms of total likes. We began the year

at approximately 180 likes and now at time of writing have 270. The graph below shows the

upward trajectory the club has been on since July, which is the earliest the Facebook metrics

will allow us to go back to.

Figure 1: Total Facebook Likes since July

The popularity of the UOW Rotaract page owes much of its success to Humans vs.

Zombies which as illustrated in the below figures lead to a massive, massive peak in the

reach of our posts. The biggest spike shown here on July the 7th (1,421) was the largest we

The largest spike to date in the Clubs total reach was also due to publicity generated

from HvZ. This was produced by End of Polio Now blog article and social media mention.

The reach of the club during this period skyrocketed to 7,466. It also lead the club to pick up

    10 new page likes overnight.

Note: To account for the Difference, a reasonable explanation could be that the figure for

Net Income MOST LIKELY is incorrect. Using accounting records from 2012-2013, some

Expenses must not have been recorded in the data, although no such receipts exist in

handover files from the past President. If this premise is correct, the Net Income should be a

smaller figure, in which case the Difference would be more accurate. Note that Rotaract in

the past (2012-2013) has predominantly used a Cash Box for Income and Expenses, while

using the Bank Accounts only where necessary, so it is possible that past Expense receipts

kept inside the Cash Box have been lost. Please contact Alexander Jessup (Rotaract

Treasurer 2013-2014) at [email protected] to discuss any issues.

    Aims/Vision for 2014:

Improve internal communication: specifically regarding Rotaract activities, CSE

events and workshops as well as events of other clubs on Campus. This will be

achieved through a monthly (and later potentially fortnightly) newsletter, operating

as a recap and look at things to come. Initial drafts have been completed by our

Secretary Zoe Broisson and President Aidan Simmons. It is hoped that in 2014 this

Newsletter will become a leading means of keeping in touch with current members

    and alumni.

Maintain Strong Brand Awareness/be sustainable: Following the success of 2013 it

is crucial that UOW Rotaract maintains the momentum it has built up. Key to this will

be maintaining the strong linkages it has fostered with external stakeholders. We are

also seeking to update our branding information and hope to have new promotional

material ready for O-week 2014 as well as detailed information regarding the next

Humans vs. Zombies event. Part of this brand update is the logo seen on page 2 of

this report which will replace the standard Rotaract logo which has been the primary

logo of the club during 2002-2013. This new logo seeks to differentiate us amongst

    Conclusion:

We feel that the items discussed in this report and the supporting documents are

clear proof that the UOW Rotaract Club should be recognised as 2013s Club of the Year. In

summary we feel we have made a significant contribution to the University of Wollongong

through our engaging, vibrant and successful events, the most distinctive of these was

Humans vs. Zombies and the Kindifarm petting zoo.

Despite being hampered by midyear graduations UOW Rotaract has had a strong

growth in new members since July and now is sitting at a net loss of just one member since

the beginning of 2013. We feel this is a fabulous achievement and if you include those which

we regard as being peripheral members of the group UOW Rotaract has actually recorded a

    significant growth in membership numbers.

As shown in the appendixes the UOW Rotaract club has had an extremely busy year,

participating in 40 events. Included in these are several high profile events. Through these

events and our commitment to working closely with CSE we feel we have greatly advanced

the standing and reputation of the clubs program. For these reasons we feel we should be

Miss Kentwell was among 77 students who honed their skills in running, hiding and Nerf

gun marksmanship yesterday at the University of Wollongong's first Humans vs Zombies

    event.

The game, known as HvZ, is an elaborate version of tag invented in a private Baltimore

college in 2005. It has since migrated to at least 650 campuses worldwide.

Games begin with a single original zombie, who must feed on (tag) humans, who then

    join the zombie herd.

Humans can fight using Nerf guns or by throwing balled-up pairs of socks; a direct hit will

render the zombie immobile for five minutes - time to escape.

In the US, such battles can last for days or weeks on end, only concluding when all

humans have been eaten or all zombies starved.

Zombies need to "eat" every 48 hours or they die. The humans very rarely win.

Games can grow intense as students come under surprise attack walking between

Mr Browne was also delighted to receive a donation to the Rotary Foundation from the

    University of Wollongong Rotaract Club.

UOW Rotaract president Aidan Simmons recently organised a Humans v Zombies (HvZ)

fund-raising event for Rotary International's End Polio Now campaign.

Pride of the Illawarra winners honoured

"It is $1500 to go to the Rotary Foundation, which will get approximately 2500 children

    vaccinated," Mr Simmons said.

"A vaccine for polio is 60."

Mr Simmons said the HvZ world the club members created at the university involved 77

students participating in a game that has now spread to 650 university campuses around theworld.

Nerf guns were used in the fight against the zombies.

Mr Browne said the university students had raised much more than they realised for such a

    great cause.

Our fundraising goal was $1,000 and I am overjoyed to announce that we successfully

exceeded it. On Wednesday the 13th

Governor of 9675 Gary Browne to pass onto the Sydney Rotary Office.

Beyond funds raised, the event was a massive success on social media. The clubs reach

    Zombies are Coming!

Members of the UOW Rotaract Club are organizing Wollongongs firstHumans vs Zombies

event for July 4 to raise funds for Rotary Internationals End Polio campaign.

The Club has successfully booked Keira MP, Ryan Park to come and open the event, which

will start on the Universitys Duckpond Lawn at 9:15am.

The Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbery, regrettably unable to attend due to an urgent meeting,

commended students for taking time off from their studies and exams to ward off a real

and debilitating disease. It is good to see that many students will have fun and adventure on

the Human v Zombies event at the University.

His advice to competitors was simple, if you see zombies. RUN.

Event Organiser, Aidan Simmons, said, we are very excited for this, we have been out

promoting the event wherever possible and the feedback from people has been

    overwhelmingly positive.

Humans vs. Zombies was invented at Goucher College, Baltimore in 2005 and has been

played at over 650 places worldwide.

When you get right down to it HvZ is essentially a giant game of tag with Nerf guns, he

    said.

We have tried our best to stay true to that and the biggest challenge has been adapting the

game to be played over a day rather than a week which we feel we have done extremely

    well.

Interested members of the public can find the event on Facebook or on the Clubs CSE

    webpage.

    Ryan Park, MP for Keira:

Humans vs Zombies was a great way to not only promote fun and friendship amongst young

people but also support the great work that Rotary is doing across the globe to try and

eradicate Polio and the devastating impact it has on young people and their families. The

University of Wollongong Rotaract Club deserve a big round of applause for their efforts in

establishing what I am sure will become an even bigger event in the years to come.

Gordon Bradbury, Lord Mayor of Wollongong:

By now the zombie epidemic should have subsided. But as they say, be prepared for

anything. Sorry I couldnt be at the end of the first Human vs Zombies event. I always look

forward to meeting with students from the University. They are a lively and engaging group.

Thursday would have been a robust tussle between the remaining humans on campus and

the growing zombie horde. But all for a great cause anything which will go towards ending

polio is a great objective. I hope that there was much fun as well as much funds raised for

    Darren Koppel, UOW Rotaract President:

It was a great achievement to get the Wollongong young community involved in the UOW

Rotaract Club, and Rotary Internationals brilliant End Polio Now campaign. I congratulate

Aidan in bringing a goal of his to fruition, he has demonstrated how Rotaract can be used to

bring people together for good fun and a good cause.

Aidan Simmons, Event Organiser, Incoming President UOW Rotaract

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you all. Thursday was the culmination of adream which was kindled in 2011 when HvZ was first attempted and regrettably failed due

to insurance concerns. I am pleased to say that we did it. Being part of this whole spectacle

was something surreal, the enthusiasm of those that showed up was nearly as infectious as

the deadly disease ravaging the campus. I cant wait to hear all the stories you have and do

as always urge you to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and send them to me. Either

on Facebook or at [email protected]. We will continue to update the blog andthe Rotaract page with more news on the plans for the next event and would like to find a

way to stay in touch with the 70+ people that took part in this years game. There are a few

people I have to thank individually, HvZ couldnt have happened without Peter Doran,

Ainsley Killah, Sam Rathbone, Darren Koppel, Misha Kovac, Gareth Hoyle, The UOW

Rotaract Club and Corrimal Rotary. I want to thank Ryan Park and Gordon Bradbury for their
