In the absence of President Dadz
Mahipus, Club Secretary PAG Arnold Navales presided the Weekly Luncheon Meeting as PP Ruben Robillo volunteered to be the Master of Ceremony. Rtn. May Fiel Divino led the group in the reading of the Object of Rotary and the Four Way Test as Dir. May Divino acted as Secretary as she read the Secretary’s Report. TRF Chairman PP Ferdinand Maranon greeted the celebrants of the month as he offered a song for them.
Indeed, the day is even more exciting as Rtn. Harold Banggay presented the presence of Rotaract of Davao Officers who will be taking their oath later and the presence of PAG Arlene Adlawan of RC Tagum Golden Laces.
Engr. Sean Ligtvoet, who was introduced by Rtn. Joseph Bonnemeijer shared his wisdom about waste water treatment and risk management. During the
President’s Time, PAG Arnold Navales read the message of President Mahipus as published in the Weekly Bulletin. PP Ferdie Maranon charged and administered the Oath Taking of Rotaract Officers and posed for a group picture before the meeting was adjourned.
My Davao
Everything around us seems to be undergoing rapid changes nowadays that perhaps it’s necessary to take stock of what we have now, as well as what we used to have, before we lose them to forgotten history and forever fail to appreciate the wonderful city we used to have.
I remember a Davao where people still smiled at each other, even among strangers. Life then was'nt so complex nor harried and competition was friendly. Respect was easily given as was courtesy. Crime rate in the city was low and Policemen functioned more to man traffic and assist pedestrians and motorists than to arrest. As such, they did not instill fear, but were loved and admired.
Just like its people, the weather in Davao was constantly cool and breezy, and air conditioning was not a necessity in houses and cars. Trees abounded in the city, growing between houses, between buildings and even along streets. Davao River was constantly clean and green, with children splashing on its banks, and for the more daring, even leaping from the bridge, to the deep clean water below.
Weekends found families frolicking in the clean, beautiful beaches of Times beach, Talomo beach and Dumoy, where one could still buy fresh fish for lunch, from the fisher folk that lived there.
Traffic was unheard of. There was no need for malls. People leisurely strolled the commercial streets of San Pedro, Claveria and Uyanguren to shop from the variety of shops and stores run by enterprising batanguenos, chinese, pakistani and indian traders. One could also grab a bite to eat or watch a movie.
Parties and Social events were held in homes of celebrants and rarely in hotels and convention halls. Barbecue and fried rice were favorite fares as were grilled fish, kinilaw and pansit, and of course lechon.
Illnesses like cancer, diabetes and hypertension were uncommon, and there was no HIV, no STD's and no drug problem. Traumatic and violent injuries were few and far between. Only amoebiasis was common. This was due to the primitive water system that Davao used to have, as we then relied more on the easily contaminated rain water for our drinking and washing needs. Most houses had rain water tanks as it almost always rained in Davao every night.
Now however, we have the best water in the country, thanks to our abundant supply of underground water. Thus, we are still a blessed city. But at the rate we are forcibly changing the natural landscape of our beloved city, without regard to preserving its once abundant resources, how long can we remain blessed?

DIOSDADO ANGELO “DADZ” A. MAHIPUS
Hi Fellow Rotarians, I am happy to be back. I just needed some time to organize a Corporation who is willing to partner with us on pursuing social responsibility among the vulnerable sectors of our society. I am recruiting a Past Rotarian to join the Mother Club in the person of Atty. Jose Irbani Lorena of the Bangsmoro Autonomous Region for Mindanao. It would be a great honor to have a brilliant and articulate Muslim Lawyer who was former Undersecretary of Office of the President Peace Process (OPAP) and now Member of Parliament (MP) of BARM Assembly. Congratulations to the newly inducted Rotaract Club headed by its Moderator, Engr. Myrna E. Asentista and President Sandra Lyn D. Villar. It is our desire to organize our youth and channel their potentialities into more meaningful involvement in nation-building and community development. Now that they are organized, we look forward to more community-based activities. Today, our fellow Rotarian Carlos C. Tan Jr. will be our speaker. His Classification talk today is all about banking, finance and investments. Let’s learn good business opportunities from the Banker.
Mabuhay ang Rotary!!!
Lets be rotary-like in our dealings with the
Club using the 4-WAY TEST...”

SEPTEMBER 2019
Here in the United States, another summer is winding down. And for the Maloney family, every summer ends with a return to my hometown of Ridgway, Illinois, for the annual Popcorn Day festival, where I am honored to serve as the “Popcorn King,” the master of ceremonies for the day’s events. Regardless of the season, every family has its own traditions. I would like to suggest a new one for yours: Find an opportunity to introduce your family to Rotary. One of my family’s traditions is to take our daughters and grandsons to the Rotary International Convention. The 2020 convention in Honolulu will be a wonderful way to introduce your children and grandchildren to the internationality of Rotary. We are planning many family-oriented events for everyone to enjoy.
Any time is a fabulous time to bring family members on a Rotary service project or to a fundraising event. But perhaps you have not seen many family-friendly events at your club. That is precisely why one of my top priorities this year is to make most Rotary events welcoming to family members.
We must foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with family, but complements it. We should never expect our members to choose between the two. That means being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.
Often, the young professionals that Rotary needs to attract in order to remain a dynamic 21st-century service organization are the very people who have the greatest family responsibilities. We must not keep these prospective young members away from their families by holding events on evenings and weekends at which their children are not welcome.
For too long, we have closed the doors of many Rotary events to children and sometimes even spouses. What wasted opportunities these are! Every chance we have to pass on the gift of Rotary to young people is one we must take if we are going to grow Rotary and ensure that the next generation is fully engaged in our mission.
So let us open our doors and do it in a fun way, with opportunities that make our children and grandchildren want to learn more about Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary membership. Start small if you must — perhaps by holding some of your meetings at more family-friendly times — but think about how you can continue these kinds of events for years to come.
Bringing children to Rotary events is not just fun; it also exposes them to the world! Make this a memorable year for your family — and an unforgettable year for the ever-expanding family of Rotary as Rotary Connects the World.
