Littered with oldNational Geographicmagazines, a model

volcano, and a solar cooker,Bartholomew Meena’scrammed science room inMachame, Tanzania, capturedAmy Kaspar’s heart at firstglance.

“He created all the scienceprojects we had from ourchildhood in one room,” recallsKaspar, a former RotaryScholar who’s now a memberof the Rotary Club of CapitalSquare in Ohio. Within thoseprojects, she saw Meena’spassion for his environmentand a wealth of unexploredopportunities, particularly thechance to collaborate andstudy the environmentalimpact of Mount Kilimanjaro’smelting glaciers.

“I had attended severallectures recently at Ohio StateUniversity's Byrd PolarResearch Center,” Kaspar says.“The thought hit me, shouldn’tthe people who live around themountain know about what ishappening and prepare for thechanges?”

Kaspar spent the next fouryears connecting Meena withthe center, which has beendoing cutting edge climatechange research. Kaspar’sdesire to help Machamematched the center’s goal ofproviding more research to

local communities where itcould do more good. And byutilizing Rotary’s network, shewas able to bring Rotarymembers in Ohio andMachame into thecollaboration.

Together, they would teachcommunities at the base ofMount Kilimanjaro how toadapt to the changingtemperatures andprecipitation patterns.

“Tanzania is an area wherewe haven’t been able to giveback as much,” says JasonCervenac, educationaloutreach coordinator for theByrd center, “and aneducational initiative seemed

to be an obvious approach.”The center is also providing

Meena with material to write anew curriculum in Swahili, which Rotary members willhelp publish, distribute, andpromote. Additional plans arein the works to use posters toeducate the community, holdseminars and communityworkshops, and fund studyexchanges between Tanzaniaand Ohio.

None of this would havebeen possible without theRotary infrastructure, Kasparsays.

“It’s all about the personalrelationships you establish,”she adds. “Rotary has changed

who I am, and now I want to dowhat I can to help change thelives of others for the better.”

Kaspar’s path to Rotarybegan in 1993,when she studiedarchitecture and internationaldevelopment at Oxford BrooksUniversity in Oxford, England, through a Rotary FoundationAmbassadorial Scholarship. There she met her host family,Jane and Peter Jones of theRotary Club of Haddenhamand District.

“Amy arrived in awheelchair with a bicycle.Need I say more?” says Jane, who with her husband hashosted more than 20 scholars.“We found it difficult to controlher exuberance andenthusiasm and keep her plansgrounded, but that isn’t acriticism.”

The Jones family invitedKaspar to attend club activitiesand take part in serviceprojects. A decade later, theyput her in touch with Rotarymembers in Tanzania, whereshe would go on to work withthe relatively new Rotary Clubof Machame.

“I’m here today because myhost dad in England wouldnever let me off the hook andalways made sure I gotinvolved in stuff,” she says.“Service is now a part of who Iam. It’s a part of my geneticmakeup.”
