WELCOME TO BLACKHEATH

There’s always a great sense of anticipation in April as the new cricket season approaches, but there are perhaps even more reasons for this than usual at Blackheath this year.

After another highly successful year for our 1st XI in 2016, there is every reason to expect great things of Pete Melhuish’s young team. Simon Mansell steps up to captain our 2nd XI with Colin Parrott taking over the 3rd XI, both teams being strengthened by yet more young players coming up from our junior section, as well as new recruits. A revision to the league rules means that half our games will be limited over matches and the bonus point system has been revised to encourage more attacking cricket, which should add spice to the season. And we have some exciting new Sunday fixtures lined up, as well as another tremendous cricket week including the return of the MCC.

Meanwhile, our juniors continue to go from strength to strength. Once again we are fielding no fewer than 13 boys’ league teams, as well as 2 girls’ teams. Our strength in depth these days is apparent from the large number of our juniors selected for district cricket, as well as the invitation to our U13 squad to participate in a new Surrey junior premier league. Reflecting this, our coaching programme is significantly expanded this year to offer a range of extra midweek sessions as well as the opportunity for individual coaching – in addition to our ever-popular Friday nights.

There are other new developments too. We’re delighted to have formed a new partnership with TWM Solicitors in Guildford, who will be the club’s main sponsor for at least the next 3 years. We’re equally enthusiastic about the club’s new commitment to support the East Africa Cricket Foundation – a hugely deserving charity working in deprived areas around Nairobi – both by fundraising and collecting used junior kit to send out to Kenya.

With all the usual social activities (and a few additional ones) as well, it promises to be another great summer. Roll on the first ball ...

Nick Harrison

SENIOR CRICKET SATURDAY CRICKET

Blackheath will again be fielding 3 teams in the I’Anson League this season: the 1st XI in Division 1, the 2nd XI in Division 3 and the 3rd XI in Division 5. Founded in Grayshott, Hampshire in January 1901, the league draws its member clubs from Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex. It is believed to be the oldest continuously-operating village cricket league in England. Many of its members have fine village grounds – all are within 45 minutes drive of Blackheath.

League matches are on Saturday afternoons between April and September. This season half the matches will be declaration games, the other half limited over fixtures. Full information about the league may be found on the league website at http://ia.play-cricket.com.

Winter training for the senior teams has been ongoing at Cranleigh School since January. During the summer, the seniors train on Wednesday evenings at Blackheath from 6-8pm.

SUNDAY CRICKET

Aside from league cricket on Saturdays, Blackheath fields at least one and sometimes two teams every Sunday during the season. Depending on the opposition, some of our Sunday fixtures may be designated as development games, giving the opportunity for some of our older juniors to have a taste of adult cricket.

The standard of opposition on Sundays varies considerably, from relaxed and entertaining matches against friendly local rivals, to highly competitive fixtures against very strong wandering sides. This means that on Sundays we are able to accommodate cricketers of almost any standard; we take pride in the fact that everyone is welcome at Blackheath.

EVENING AND MIDWEEK CRICKET

In addition to our weekend fixtures, we play short knock-out matches on some Tuesday evenings and occasional longer midweek fixtures. In addition, we play every day during our cricket week (the first full week in August), when we entertain some excellent opposition, including the MCC.

SENIOR MEMBERSHIP

Various categories of senior membership are available at different rates, with a very substantial discount for players under 21. Social membership is also available. For full details please visit the club website (www.blackheathcc.co.uk), or contact our senior membership secretary, Graham Webb, on 01483 892801.

JUNIOR CRICKET

BOYS’ CRICKET

Blackheath runs a big and highly successful boys’ section, reflected in the large number of boys now selected for Surrey district cricket – this year no fewer than 17 in our three senior squads alone. As explained below, we have a significantly expanded coaching programme this year, offering extra opportunities for both squad and individual coaching.

This summer we will be running 13 boys’ league teams at age groups between U8s and U15s in the Surrey Junior Invitational League, the West Surrey Youth Cricket League and the West Surrey Development League, giving the opportunity for everyone to play in matches of the appropriate standard. There is no league cricket for our youngest boys’ squad (U7s), however we generally arrange one or two friendly matches for this age group. Matches are generally played on Sunday mornings.

Whilst all squads get the opportunity to play at least some matches at our main ground, for reasons of space many of our junior home matches are played elsewhere: this season games will be played at Urnfield and Duke of Kent School as well as Blackheath: see pages 12-14.

GIRLS’ CRICKET

Our expanding and highly popular girls’ section will once again this year be led by Sharon Eyers of Middlesex CCC. This is open to girls in school years 2 to 6 (U7s –U11s) and will train from 5.30pm to 6.30pm each Friday. This year, we will be entering girls’ teams for tournaments at both U9 and U11 levels.

8

MINIS

We will be running a new “Minis” section this year between 4.30 and 5.30pm each Friday, for both boys and girls in Year 1 at school (U6s). This will be run by our two Surrey coaches, Ronny and Danny Harrison.

Separately, Danny and Ronny also run sessions for pre-schoolers aged 3 and over through “Matchfit Minis”, part of Matchfit Academy, which is associated with the club. For further details of these sessions, visit www.matchfitacademy.com.

SQUAD COACHING PROGRAMME

Weekly indoor coaching sessions have been running since January, however the main coaching in the summer takes place on Friday evenings from 4.30pm onwards, starting on Friday 21st April. These are very popular and busy evenings: for further details of arrangements see page 11. Squad coaching session times on Fridays are as follows:

Minis: 4.30-5.30pm Boys U7s: 5.15 - 6.30pm Boys U8s: 5.15 - 6.30pm Boys U9s: 5.15 - 6.30pm Boys U10s: 5.15 - 6.30pm

Girls U7s-U11s: 5.30 - 6.30pm Boys U11s: 6.30 - 8pm Boys U12s: 6.30 - 8pm Boys U13s: 6.30 - 8pm Boys U14s/U15s: 6.30 - 8pm

In addition, this year we are offering the option of midweek training sessions for all squads playing hardball cricket (U10s and older). These are planned to take place from 6-8pm on the following days: U10s/U11s on Mondays; U12s on Tuesdays; U13s/U14s/U15s on Thursdays. These sessions are numbers-limited and in some cases may have to be by invitation only. For further details, please ask your squad manager.

All our coaching sessions are run by qualified coaches. We currently have around 18 qualified club coaches, including 12 UKCC level 2 coaches and one level 3 coach - our head coach, Chris Poil. In addition, there will be a team of our own young players helping with coaching sessions.

INDIVIDUAL COACHING

Aside from squad coaching, extra individual or 1:2 coaching is available at the club from our two Surrey coaches, Ronny and Danny Harrison, both in the holidays and in term time outside school hours. Sessions cost just £20 per hour for Blackheath members, including use of a bowling machine and (where appropriate) video technology. For further details see www.matchfitacademy.com/matchfit-cricket.

To book sessions, please contact them directly at [email protected] (07760 665222) or [email protected] (07341 813723).

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Aside from our regular activities, there will an U12s tour to Devon in early May, a half term cricket camp at the end of May/beginning of June and a repeat of last year’s “junior cricket week” at the end of July. In addition, there will be a trip for our junior section to a T20 game at the Oval. If the opportunity arises, we will also take a party to demonstrate their Kwik cricket skills on the outfield at lunch during the Oval test match, as we have done before.

MEMBERSHIP

At the time of writing, most squads are full for this season. There are still a few places left in one or two age groups, but please check with our junior membership secretary, Sue Brocksom, before attempting to register.

As usual all registration must be done online via the members’ section on the club’s website: www.blackheathcc.co.uk. Subscriptions this year remain at £100 for the boys’ U9s and older squads (£70 with younger sibling discount) and £70 for the boys’ U8s squad (£50 with younger sibling discount) and £60 for the boys’ U7s squad, the girls’ section and the minis (£40 with younger sibling discount).

FRIDAY EVENINGS

Friday evenings can be very busy at Blackheath and to ensure things work properly we ask everyone to follow a few simple rules …

Please make sure your child is signed in with the appropriate coach at the start of the practice sessions.

Unless your child is aged 12 or older, we ask you either to remain at the club during the practice sessions or to find another adult who is willing to take responsibility for your child if necessary, and to ensure that the relevant squad manager is told who that adult is.

Please keep any children you bring to the club who are not being coached under close supervision and out of the areas where coaching is taking place. If an unsupervised child wanders into a practice area they can easily be hurt by a stray cricket ball.

Please do not temporarily extract your child from a coaching session, for example to feed them. If necessary, please give your child a snack and a drink before the coaching starts.

Please do not leave litter and ensure that your children do not do so either.

Generally, please be patient and bear in mind that the club is run largely by volunteers who put in an enormous amount of time and effort to make things work. If you have time to lend a hand yourself, it will always be much appreciated!

TRAFFIC AND PARKING

Blackheath is a quiet residential village with single track roads and limited parking. When visiting the club either for matches or on Friday evenings ...

If you can share transport, please do so to reduce the number of cars coming to the village.

Please drive slowly and carefully at all times. There is a 20 mph speed limit in the village and a 5mph speed limit on the track up to the club.

When arriving at the ground by car on Friday evenings, please follow the directions of our traffic marshals, and park only where directed. When the club car park is full you will be directed first to the Villagers Pub Car Park, then to the public car park at the top of the village. There is also a further public car park off Littleford Lane within a short walk of the ground.

If you have no alternative but to park on Blackheath Lane, please avoid blocking driveways or damaging verges.

When leaving at the end of the evening, please do so as quietly as possible.

From central Guildford…take the A281 south out of Guildford towards Horsham. After about 2 miles you cross a railway bridge in Shalford. Immediately after this, turn left towards Dorking on the A248. After about 1½ miles, just after entering Wonersh, take the next left turn, signposted to Blackheath and ‘Barnett Hill Conference Centre’. Follow the lane up for about 1 mile until you reach Blackheath. At the crossroads carry straight on up the hill and after about 50 yards take the right fork up a small track where you should see a sign marked "cricket".

URNFIELD (GU4 8PH)

Urnfield is the Guildford County School sports ground, and is located near Guildford about 10 minutes drive from Blackheath via Chilworth and Halfpenny Lane.

DUKE OF KENT SCHOOL (GU6 7NS)

Duke of Kent School is located between Peaslake and Ewhurst. It is about 15-20 minutes drive from Blackheath via Albury and Peaslake.

FACILITIES AND CATERING

THE TANGLEY PAVILION

Blackheath’s new pavilion, known as The Tangley Pavilion, was constructed over the winter of 2012-13 at a cost of around £400,000 and opened in May 2013. The exterior of the new building is modelled on a sketch dated from 1896 by the Arts & Crafts architect, Charles Harrison Townsend. However, the interior is a fully modern one, with a large clubroom enjoying an elevated view over the magnificent ground. The pavilion’s facilities include a superb bar, fully equipped kitchen, large screen TV, pool table and wifi.

HIRING THE PAVILION

The Tangley Pavilion is not available for general public hire, however members of the club (including all Blackheath village residents) are able to hire it for suitable private functions consistent with planning restrictions. For further information, please contact the club secretary, Simon Jones.

CATERING

Aside from the regular Friday BBQs and Saturday and Sunday teas, there will once again be hot food served on Saturday evenings from the beginning of June until mid-August (as well as, of course, every evening during cricket week). There will also be coffee and bacon rolls served at all junior matches at Blackheath on Sunday mornings during the season (i.e. until the end of July).

CLUB KIT This year the club has a full range of new kit from our new supplier, Pendle Cricket. A limited number of match shirts can be purchased directly from the club: contact Lesley Cathrew ([email protected]). Otherwise orders should be placed through our online shop: http://blackheath-cc.pendlecricket.co.uk/.
