(26th to 29th May 2010). Unfortunately not all clubs were represented this year as Monash and Adelaide Clubs were in the midst of major restructures. The meeting gives managers a chance to view and appraise the host club, investigate the strengths and weaknesses in our own club and assist the host club with fresh eyes and compare operations. Key outcomes: New marketing strategies, online liquor purchasing and function/event bookings, conference packaging, car parking, staffing, E.H & S (Environmental Health and Safety) and Carbon Neutral energy initiatives. This year we were hosted by the University Club of W.A. Perth is a very isolated city, with much of the activity directed to the mining industry. While I found that ‘East Coasters were not the flavour of the month’, I was amused at the seemingly large amounts spent by mining companies on advertisements and media directed against the new Super Profits Tax. The UWA Club is located on the banks of Matilda Bay and is certainly the most extensive and well appointed University Club in Australia, if not internationally. UWA funded and built new club facilities ($22 million) some six years ago. The previous staff club, also unfortunately named University House, financially collapsed with debts to the University in excess of $1 million and yearly operational losses of $400,000 pa. The new UWA Club is a ‘business unit’ of the University, and is not an autonomous staff club such as we have here in Melbourne. The W.A. operation is managed professionally (under direction of the University Chief Financial Officer), is well maintained and offers good value for money in the ‘member’ dining areas. It features contemporary eating facilities, car parking, large and well appointed 300 seat banquet areas, contemporary seminar facilities plus a 500 seat auditorium, and excellent ‘back of house’ kitchen and service amenities. Membership: The UWA Club has a membership of 3500 which includes a large number of corporate members from Perth businesses which have an association with the University. The large banquet and meeting areas are used heavily by corporate members and contribute substantially to the costs of running the operation. Room Hire/Service Charges: These charges are similar to hire charges for the Woodward Centre here in Melbourne (Unihouse does not charge room or service charges in addition to catering). Member and non member pricing: All clubs, but our own, include a two tier pricing structure with higher prices for non members. The Main Dining Room café prices here at Melbourne are heavily subsidized by other areas within the Club operation. Each visitor or non member who uses the café and lounges is contributing to this cost or subsidy. I am wondering if this is a strategy that our members would find attractive? Next year we meet in Adelaide. Other matters Southern Precinct • We have completed a fully funded business plan for this new facility and we are waiting for final relocation of the current occupant, before refurbishment can begin. Refurbishment • A small amount of necessary works has been completed or is in progress including: replacing the air-conditioning, investigating art works for the large blank wall and blinds for the bay windows in the newly refurbished ‘Garden Lounge’. Additionally we have replaced the 46 Main Dining Room tables and are waiting for the new parquetry to be laid near the coffee bar after the hail storm earlier this year. Car parking Much of the North Court car park (Tin Alley) is still in use by contractors and is not usable. We have been informed that eventually this car park will be closed in line with the University Master Plan. This will make access to University House rather problematic, especially for visitors who are not familiar with other car parks in and around the University. We are producing two new car parking maps to assist members and guests, one for day time car park availability and another for after-hours. Please contact reception if you would like a copy.
