Chaplain’s Corner For most, the artist in us begins early. Baptism af-fords us the opportunity to step into a frame which clearly dictates "color me catholic". Fortunately, the beginning brushes are guided by parents, friends, parish clergy, teachers and peers. Colors such as faith, strength and courage are strong, basic and long lasting.....properly applied,

they do not melt, run or fade..... Colors such as hope, dreams, compassion, car-ing understanding, kind-ness, patience, and etc blend so beautifully but sometimes the brush can slip so as to distort the painting. This is where the sacrament of recon-ciliation becomes a giant eraser wiping out those distortions so that we can continue in the right direc-

tion. It takes a lifetime to com-plete a "color me catholic". However, we are given the proper tools to work with so hopefully it turns out well enough to be able to allow us to blend into that gorgeous rainbow we see on occasions. Success to all !!!!! FATHE JOE

◊ Protons have mass? I didn’t even know they were Catholic. ◊ One nice thing about egotists, they don’t talk about other people. ◊ The cost of living hasn’t affected its popularity. ◊ All I ask is for a chance to prove that money can’t make me happy.

He concluded with Three things that are truly constant – Father – Son – Holy Ghost

One of the highlights of the evening was the raffling of nine ‘Baskets of Cheer’. These were created by Veronica Comrie using donations by Serrans and other attendees and beautiful baskets donated by Veronica. Several were taken home by our guests to enjoy over the holidays. The largest was won by Sister Carmen Alvarez, OP from St Joan of Arc and required two Serrans to carry it to her car! At the end of the evening each Sister and Nun received a special gift bag from Fernande Camino, as is her custom, the contents known only to Fernande and the receipt ants. It was a beautiful evening and judging by the comments heard was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. We of the Serra Club of South Palm Beach County feel blessed and privileged to have these consecrated ladies in our company and pray that they will all be able to join us again next year for the Seventh Annual Girls Night Out.

Summary of Girls’ night out. Barbara Hostomsky thanked all members for supporting GNO with their purchase of dinner tickets for the religious as well as buying raffle tickets. Fernande Camino was complimented for providing wonderful gift bags for all the religious to take home. Dick Park provided the financial numbers. Barbara Hostomsky read a note received from June and Jack Hefty thanking Serra but stating they are not able to join. They sent a check to cover their breakfasts.

Option to consider Girls Night Out be held at Atlantis CC. Nancy Noonan asked this item be tabled to the next board meeting. Larry Winker agreed.

Barbecue for seminarians to be held December 19. Believe this date to be in error – should be February 19. However, we are not invited. Our contributions will be given to the seminarians.

Coordination of meeting with Serrans, K of C; Columbiettes and CCW with Director of Vocations, Fr. Yves Francois. Larry Winker and Jim Anderson will continue to work on this.

Born Miguel José Serra Fer-rer in Petra, on the Balearic Island of Majorca on 24 No-vember 1713, Fr. Serra re-named himself in honor of Saint Juniper, who had also been a Franciscan. On 14 September 1730 he entered the Order of Friars Minor (O.F.M.). For his proficiency in studies he was appointed lector of philosophy before his ordination to the priest-hood. Later he received a doctorate in theology from the Lullian University in Palma, where he also occu-pied the Duns Scotus chair of philosophy at the College of San Fernando until he joined the missionary college of San Fernando, Mexico in 1749. That year he traveled to North America, first to Mex-ico City, where he taught. While traveling on foot from Vera Cruz to the capital, he injured his leg in such a way that he suffered from it throughout the rest of his life, though he continued to make his journeys on foot whenever possible. He re-quested a transfer to the Si-erra Gorda Indian Missions some thirty leagues north of Queretaro where he spent nine years, including time as the mission's superior,

learned the language of the Pame Indians, and translated the catechism into their lan-guage. Recalled to Mexico, he became famous as a fer-vent and effective preacher of missions. In 1767 Serra was appointed superior of a band of fifteen Franciscans for the Indian Missions of Lower Califor-nia. The Franciscans took over the administration of the missions on the Baja California Peninsula from the Jesuits on February 3, 1768 with Father Serra serving as "Father Presidente." On 12 March 1768, Serra set out from the Pacific port of San Blas on his way to California. Early in 1769, he accompa-nied Governor Gaspar de Portolà on his expedition to Nueva California. On the way he established the Misión San Fernando Rey de España de Velicatá on May 14 (the only Franciscan mis-sion in all of Baja California). When the party reached San Diego on 1 July, Serra stayed behind to start Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the twenty-one California missions (including the nearby Visita de la Pre-sentación, also founded un-der Serra's leadership) which accomplished the conver-sions of all the natives on the

coast as far as Sonoma in the north. When Monterey was reached and Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo founded, Serra remained there as "Father Presidente" of the Alta California mis-sions. In 1771 he relocated the mission to Carmel, which became known as "Mission Carmel" and served as his headquarters. Under his presidency were founded Mission San Antonio de Pa-dua, Mission San Gabriel Ar-cángel, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San Francisco de Asís, Mis-sion Santa Clara de Asís, and Mission San Buenaventura. In 1773, difficulties with Pedro Fages, the military commander, compelled Fa-ther Serra to travel to Mexico City to argue before Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli y Ursua for the removal of Fages as the Governor of California Nueva. At the capital of Mexico, by order of Viceroy Bucareli, he drew up his Representación in thirty-two articles. Bucareli ruled in Serra's favor on 30 of the 32 charges brought against Fages, who removed him from office in 1774, af-ter which time Serra returned to California. In 1778, Serra

was given dispensation to administer the sacrament of confirmation for the faithful in California. During the remaining three years of his life he once more visited the missions from San Diego to San Francisco, trav-eling more than 600 miles in the process, in order to con-firm all who had been bap-tized. He suffered intensely from his crippled leg and from his chest, yet he would use no remedies. He con-firmed 5,309 persons, who, with but few exceptions, were Indians. On 28 August 1784 at the age of 70, Father Serra died at Mission Carmel and was interred there under the sanctuary floor. Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988.

The chapel at Mission San Juan Capistrano, built in 1782, is believed to be the oldest standing building in California. Known as "Father Serra's Church," it has the distinction of being the only remaining church in which the padre is known to have officiated. A bronze statue represents him as the apos-tolic preacher at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Besides extraordinary forti-tude, his conspicuous virtues included his zeal, humilty and absolute faith and confidence in God. The wide esteem for him by Californians is evi-denced by the fact that Mrs. Leland Stanford, a non-Catholic, had a granite monument erected to him at Monterey. In 1884 the Legislature of California passed a concur-rent resolution making 29

August of that year, the cen-tennial of Father Serra's bur-ial, a legal holiday. Many of Serra's letters and other documentation are extant, the principal ones being his Diary of the journey from Loreto to San Diego, which was published in Out West (March to June, 1902) along with Serra's Representación. A statue of Father Serra represents the state of Cali-fornia in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol Building. It was sculpted by Ettore Cadorin and depicts Serra holding a cross and looking toward the sky. Both Spain and the United States have honored Serra with postage stamps. VOLUNTEERS PLANT MORE THAN 800 PINE SEEDLINGS AT SPECIAL ST. VINCENT DE PAUL REGIONAL SEMINARY EVENT

“Seedlings for St. Vincent” supports Vocations, Conservation and Seminary BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA – (December 19, 2007) – A group of 40 volun-

teers planted more than 800 Slash Pine Seedlings throughout the campus of St Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary December 16 as part of, “Seedlings for St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary,” promoting vocations to the priest-hood, conservation and support for the semi-nary.

The event involved the Serra Club of

South Palm Beach, other Serra Clubs around the state and area parish youth groups in the planting Florida native Slash Pine tree seed-lings on the campus here. A $25 donation to the Seminary will result in the planting of a pine seedling at the event. The seminary has thus far raised more than $58,000 in support from 200 plus donors of Seedlings for St. Vincent, which was also the focus of the seminary’s annual holiday appeal.

“Despite the forecast of rain, the good Lord watched over us and enabled us to plant

more than 800 seedlings,” said Fr. Louis Guerin, event chair and a member of the seminary’s resident faculty. “We beautified our campus and returned vegetation to the seminary’s envi-ronment while reflecting and being reminded that vocations, like seedlings, need to be culti-vated and nourished in the vineyard of the Lord.”

The event began with Mass celebrated by Fr. Guerin followed by a continental break-

fast and then the planting of the seedlings. The Slash Pine tree is a native to Florida and normally grows on sandy, poorly drained

flatwoods soils. A wide variety of wildlife benefit from the Slash Pine. Eagles nest in its crown, and the Red Cockaded Woodpecker excavates nests in older trees afflicted with red heart fungus. These trees generally grow straight and tall with a strong central leader.

Owned by the seven Catholic dioceses of the Province of Florida, the seminary has

educated nearly 500 priests since its founding in 1963
