The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites

How Do Puppets Come to Life?

Have you ever seen clouds in the sky? Have the shapes ever reminded you of something like an animal or a toy?

When you pretend to see things in clouds, you are using your imagination. It is fun to imagine and pretend!

Soon you will be coming to the theatre at Clowes Hall. You will see a show where you can use your imagination. It is puppet show called The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites. Do you like puppets?

You will be pretending that the puppets in this show are clouds, caterpillars, chameleons and all kinds of animals. Do you think you can do that? If you can, you will have lots of fun at the show!

Have you ever played with puppets? Maybe you have made hand puppets at school or home out of an old sock or paper bag.

The puppets you will see in The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites are different from a hand puppet. They are made from foam that is cut into just the right shape. Then the foam is covered with a stretchy fabric.

Next, artists paint the fabric with special paint. They are careful to apply the paint with brush strokes that look like Eric Carle painted the puppets. When you watch the show, see if you think the puppets look like the animals Eric Carle creates in his books.

Before the puppet can be used, it has to have “controls” put inside. Instead of a hand, these puppets use cords and pulls and pipes or metal

rods. The operators of the puppets are called puppeteers. They use the controls attached to the puppets to make them move.

When you watch the show, you will probably not see the puppeteers. In fact, they do not want you to see them! They want you to watch the puppets. So, they wear all black clothes to disappear from view.

Here is a picture of the chameleon puppet used in this show. How do you think this puppet will move? Watch for him in the story of The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

These Puppets Glow! When you see the puppets in the The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites show, they will be very bright. They will look like they are glowing in the dark theatre. This happens because the puppets are painted with a special kind of paint that is fluorescent and will have a black light shining on them. A black light is a special light in a long tube. When it is turned on, the tube looks purple. When black light is used in a dark room on fluorescent paint, the colors appear to glow in the dark!

If a black light shines on you in a dark room, your teeth and your fingernails will glow! See if you can find out why.

Some animals do not change much as they grow up. They just get bigger. Think about yourself. When you grow up will you still have 2 arms, 2 legs and a head? Yes. Grown-ups may be bigger and have a few wrinkles or gray hair, but they still look very much like you.1.

Growing Up to be a Monarch

But growing up to be a butterfly is very different. Have you ever seen a Monarch butterfly? They are easy to find in Indiana. Here is a picture of one. The Monarch, like most butterflies, goes through 4 life stages. And it looks VERY different in each stage.

When the caterpillar (or larva) has grown big enough, it builds a small house called a cocoon or a chrysalis. This stage is called the pupa. Here it rests for about 2 weeks.

So, the next time you see a Monarch butterfly, remember that it once was an egg, then a caterpillar (larva), then a pupa. Isn’t nature wonderful?!

The adult Monarch lays eggs on the back of leaves. Can you find the small white dot on the back of this leaf? That is a butterfly egg! It usually takes about 10 days for the eggs to hatch.

Here is a picture of a Monarch caterpillar. See how the markings look a lot like the wings of the Monarch butterfly. This caterpillar is eating a milkweed plant. That is what most Monarch caterpillars eat.

Soon, a caterpillar (or larva) comes out of the egg. It is very small. But as it begins to eat, it grows larger and larger. A caterpillar’s main job is to eat and eat, just like in Eric Carle’s story!

What happens next is amazing! The caterpillar completely changes. When it comes out of the cocoon, it is a beautiful butterfly! Here is a picture of a Monarch that hatched out of its cocoon.

Look Carefully! All Clouds Are Not the SameAs a character in the performance Little Cloud changes into many different shapes. He becomes animals and people and objects. This tells us that all clouds are not alike.

Draw a different cloud in each of the boxes below. Then color the sky around it so we can see the shape.

Sometimes they are thin and stretched-out, like in this picture.

Other times, clouds cover the sky and look small and bumpy.

Most of the time, clouds are white. But when it is going to storm, clouds turn dark.

Sometimes clouds are big and fluffy looking like cotton candy.

How did you make your clouds look different?

Chameleons Have Very Fast, Long Tongues A chameleon is a long, thin animal with a curling tail. There are many sizes of chameleons. The smallest is about the size of this line: , only 1¼ inches long. But some chameleons can be up to 24 inches in length. Chameleons usually live in trees. They have two big eyes that stick out of their heads and can move independently. Chameleons have feet that work like your hands. They use these to climb and hold onto tree branches. Chameleons are covered with a rough skin and like to lie in the sun to get warm.Chameleons have a long, sticky tongue. It is longer than their body! They use it to catch insects. Their tongue is very fast. A chameleon can catch an insect with its tongue in less than a second! They like to catch and eat crickets, grasshoppers, flies and spiders.

Lizards You KnowA chameleon is a kind of lizard. Other kinds of lizards that you might know are:

    geckos

    gila monsters

    iguanas

Try This! With a ruler, measure out and draw a line that is 24 inches long. Then

compare this big chameleon with one measuring only 1¼ inches long.

Chameleons are unique because they can change color. The green or brown color of their skin can change to bright colors like yellow, orange, blue and green. It can also become almost black. Often these colors make bold patterns like spots and stripes on the chameleon’s body.

Sometimes the chameleon changes color to hide from animals like snakes and large birds. It tries to match the things around it so it will not be seen. This is called camouflage. Chameleons also change color when they are scared or cold.

This is a drawing of a chameleon. Pick out just 3 or 4 colors and

repeat those as you add color to this drawing.

    Did you know???

TRY THIS!Hold your head still. Look left, then look right. Now try to look both left and right at the same time! You may not be able to do this, but a chameleon can! Its two eyes can look in different directions at the same time!

Change is EverywhereEric Carle’s books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud and The Mixed Up Chameleon, are about change. Let’s remember some of the changes in the stories:

    Little Cloud changes into __________________________________________________________________.

    The caterpillar changes into _______________________________________________________________.

And the chameleon changes to look like ____________________________________________________.

Maybe there are ways that you can change too! Look at yourself right now.

ØWhat could you change about the way you look? ØHow have other people that you know changed their looks?

Sometimes we hear changes. ØTry changing your voice. ØWhat other kinds of changes can you hear?

Sometimes our feelings change. ØCan you remember a time that you

changed from sad to happy? ØThink of a time when you saw someone else’s feeling change?

Sometimes we say people “change their minds.” ØWhat does that mean? ØCan you remember a time when you changed your mind?

Change is all around us. Think about where you were and what you did today. What kind of changes did you see or hear or feel? Why do you think Eric Carle wrote stories about change? Could you write a story about something that changed?
