Welcome Two New Staff

Please extend a 4-H Welcome to two new staff in the office. We’re excited to announce that Betsy

Harwood has been hired to coordinate the Ricochet Middle School Leadership Program that we

provide in Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji, and Spirit Lake Community School Districts. This leadership

program is offered during a class period for 9 weeks with one grade level. A second leadership level

is offered another 9 weeks, and a third level for yet another 9 weeks. Betsy will be coordinating all

three levels of leadership programming with all three districts. She will be in the office half-days in

the afternoons for us and working mornings as the new Ag. Instructor at the Spirit Lake High

School. Please join us in welcoming Betsy. Her email is [email protected]

Also welcome, Jessica Sander as our new County Youth Coordinator. Jessica started September

3 in her full-time position with us. She will be working with 4-H members and families, leaders, vol-

unteers, committee members, community partners, and more. Jessica may be a familiar face to

many of you. She was a former 4-H member in Dickinson County and has served as a committee

member on the horse committee for several years. Jessica’s email is [email protected].

Thank You to Summer Staff

We want to thank Brenda Hanson for serving as our part-time Summer Program Assistant. Brenda

was a former 4-H member in Dickinson County and current club leader for the City Slickers. Her

familiarity and experience with 4-H allowed her to jump right in to the thick of summer camps and fair

preparations. Brenda not only gave leadership to 4-H programming this past summer, but also man-

aged her own massage business. She is continuing with this business and also taking coursework to

complete her Bachelor’s degree. We wish her much luck with her business and her classes. And

extend a HUGE THANK YOU to her for sharing of her time and talents to make the best better in

Dickinson County 4-H!

Congratulations to 4-H Hall of Fame Recipients

On behalf of the Dickinson County 4-H Program, VerDon and Donna Schmidt

were recognized and inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a

ceremony at the Iowa State Fair.

We congratulate them and thank them for all of their years of dedication and

volunteerism with 4-H. What a well deserving couple. Thank you for repre-

senting Dickinson County so well.

National 4 H WEEK October 6—12

Did you know that 4H has been around since 1902? It’s true! 4H was developed in the early 1900’s when educa-

tors were recognizing the needs in the younger generation to learn about agriculture.

The universally recognized 4 leaf clover didn’t come into being until 1906. At a 1 room schoolhouse near Clarion

Iowa. Students were picking clovers during recess and when their superintendent pulled up their teacher told the

children that their clovers would be a nice gift to him. His name was O. H. Benson and he was so moved by their

thoughtful act that he declared the clover to be the new emblem of 4H!

Originally, there were separate girls and boys clubs. The boys clubs were called ‘Boys Agriculture Clubs’ and the

members could exhibit corn, garden projects, and livestock. The girls clubs were called ‘Girls Home Culture Clubs’

and they taught sewing, canning, and gardening.

Classroom Visits to Recruit 4-H Members

During National 4 H week, we will be doing some classroom visits with schools in the county. We will be sharing infor-

mation with 4th and 5th graders and encouraging them to come to the Open House at the Extension Office from 4-6:00

p.m. with their parents on October 8th. And JOIN 4-H! Here is a list of times and locations. If possible, please wear your

4-H shirt on those days to help support 4-H and put a familiar face to the program for these potential members.

Leader Meeting & Training

We have a leader meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 1 from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Expo

Center. We will be handing out premium checks from fair and collecting record books, secretary/treasurer books, and

any community service write ups from the clubs. (Remember, this is the annual audit time for secretary and treasurer

books, so even if they are not being nominated for an award, we need to collect them to review.)

Please join us for a meal and training updates from the State 4-H Office. RSVP’s are needed by Friday, September 27 at

3:00 p.m. so we plan for the meal accordingly. This is one of two required trainings for leaders during the year. There is

important information to share and we hope to see you there!

Record keeping systems are due to club leaders at the September meeting. Leaders will review records and

submit them to the Extension Office by October 1 for award consideration.

We encourage every 4-Her to keep records of their projects throughout the year. This is a skill that will be utilized for

the rest of your lives in balancing a checkbook, writing a resume, and budgeting for yearly expenses. Each record

keeping system should be personalized to a way you are comfortable in keeping records, but should also be

complete enough for others to understand your

1) goals and accomplishments

2) materials used

3) financial costs/gains

4) new skills or ideas learned

5) and any photos or newspaper clippings that help tell the story of your project area(s).

Record keeping methods may include: project sheets (available in Basic, Experienced, or Advanced), video tape,

audio tape, portfolio, computerized forms, or your own creation. Forms are available online at

www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/record-keeping

You’ll need an award application indicating each project area you want considered for recognition. Please visit with

your leader or stop by the office to get forms and information on record keeping.

A sample outline for a record book or equivalent information submitted via video or audio tape might look like the

following:

I. RECORD BOOK COVER

a. With Your Name & Club Name

II. APPLICATION FORMS

a. Complete an application form indicating each project/award area. Slip this inside your book cover

so the leader & reviewers can easily see which awards you are applying for this year.

b. Attach a participation form for the leader to comment to you and the reviewers on your club

participation during the year.

III. TITLE PAGE

a. Include a Photo, Your Name, Age, Grade, Club, Years in 4-H

IV. YEARLY SUMMARY SHEET

a. This form summarizes your participation in activities for the year.

V. TABBED DIVIDERS

a. Labeled sections for each of your project areas. (i.e. Food & Nutrition, Photography, Sheep, etc.)

VI. WITHIN EACH TAB

a. Include a Basic, Experienced, or Advanced Project Sheet

b. Include any worksheets (Especially Livestock, Crops, Photography, & Horticulture Project Sheets)

c. Include any support materials like photos, newspaper clippings, etc…
