Ironman calls off runBy Jennifer LangWill Rogers, the Cloverdale

paramedic who’s raising money and awareness for Surrey’s Ser-vants Anonymous Society, has called off his 500-km run.

Rogers, who’s already com-pleted two long-distance endur-ance feats this summer as part of his 2012 Million Dollar Journey, pulled a hamstring.

He fi gures the injury will keep him from lacing up his running shoes for at least six weeks to two months, but remains optimistic he will still be able to enter this year’s Ironman Canada competi-tion.

Th e setback didn’t scuttle his 440-km bike ride from Penticton to Victoria over the Canada Day weekend. “Th e two-day ride was fi ft y percent rain, fi ft y percent headwinds, fi ft y percent sun-shine,” he said in a short note sent to supporters. “No bears and no fl ats. And only one car fi re.”

He was also able to complete his June 24 swim in about 8.5 hours – his fastest of four attempts.

At this point, Rogers is not planning to run on behalf of SAS next summer, but is keen to try the swim again “because it went so well.”

Th is time he swam from Tsaw-wassen to Galiano’s Sturdies Bay marina instead of the other di-

rection, as he’d done on his prior three swims. Th is year there was a party and a band celebrating his arrival, generating a great deal of interest in his plan to raise an on-going source of operational funds for the society.

He’s hoping 10,000 people will pledge to donate $20 a month to

create ongoing funding for SAS, an organization that helps ex-ploited women and youth leave the sex trade industry.

“It should be possible to get 10,000 people signed up and 100 businesses signed up,” he said.

Volunteers needed

Th e Alzheimer Soci-ety of B.C. is recruiting volunteers in the Clo-verdale area.

Volunteers help the society with everything from making phone calls to caregivers to facilitat-ing support groups.

“Th ey are absolutely invaluable to our team and are a big reason why we are able to meet the growing need for support and education for families living with dementia,” says Avalon Tournier, the society’s regional support and education coordina-tor for White Rock, North Delta and central Surrey.

An estimated one in 11 B.C. residents over the age of 65 are living with Alzheimer’s dis-ease and other demen-tias. Th at number is projected to double over the next generation.

Requirements for candidates who would like to volunteer as support group facilita-tors should have the following qualities: ex-cellent listening and empathy skills, a knowl-edge of dementia – or a willingness to learn. Formal or informal caregiving experience

is an asset. Training is provided. To qualify, volunteers must be will-ing to make a one-year commitment.

– For more information call Tournier at 604-541-0606

LETT

ERS

Texting and other talesBusinesses stand up for Cloverdale, but distracted drivers annoy. Plus, did the punishment fi t the crime?

An enthusiastic tip of the hat to the Cloverdale BIA and the Clo-verdale District Chamber of Com-merce for standing up for Fraser Downs, the horse racing industry, and the Cloverdale economy.

Two weeks ago, the business as-sociations voiced their opposition to a $100-million destination casi-no that has supposedly been green lighted for South Surrey.

B.C. Lottery Corp. offi cials told members of the Surrey Board of Trade June 21 the casino could be up and running by 2014 if Surrey City Council approves the plan.

Gateway Gaming and Entertain-ment wants to shut down a casino in Newton and open a 200-suite, four-to-fi ve star hotel, 600-seat convention centre and casino at 10th Avenue and 168 Street.

“Our board felt strongly that this would cannibalize Fraser Down’s ability to survive in the market-place,” Cloverdale BIA president Lyle MacMillan said in a letter sent to the BCLC. “Horse racing is at a crossroad in B.C. and we cannot aff ord to lose this vital industry.”

Th e BIA and the Chamber are in

favour of any future bid by Fraser Downs’ bid to expand into a full tourism destination with casino facilities and more, and support Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casi-no as the primary casino in Surrey.

“It’s paramount they are provided fi rst option to expand before any other casino license is granted, as their importance in the Cloverdale town site can’t be mistaken,” added Brian Young, Chamber president.

A dig of the spur to pranksters who may have taken a local grad tradition too far – or was their punishment out of line?

“Suspension yes – but let them wear their cap and gown,” Jac-queline Crawley commented on our Facebook Page, responding to a story about streaking Lord Tweedsmuir students who were banned from last month’s com-mencement ceremonies. “Th ey’ve earned it. And boys will be boys. It was a prank for goodness sake, not malicious damage or anything.

Give them a break.”“D-m Speer” agreed with the de-

cision to suspend the students, but felt the punishment went too far. “I don’t think they should not be allowed to go to commencement.

Some ppl rly [sic] look for-ward to that part.”

David John saw the lighter side of things, writing “I’d be thank-ful [for the suspen-sion], three less days in a place that doesn’t

teach you anything use-ful and a reason not to cel-

ebrate it!”Another item earned

more outrage on Face-book aft er we posted a note about it.

“Spotted outside our offi ce this a.m.: A mo-torist who was so eager to check her text mes-sages, she neglected to pull over to the curb fi rst. She simply stopped her SUV (which kept idling) in the middle of the roadway. She remained there for fi ve minutes. She

was so absorbed, she didn’t noticeus taking a bunch of pictures fromvarious angles.”

People jumped in to comment. Some were (likewise) appalled:“Oh my goodness – that’s terrible,”wrote Kristy Hill. “It looks like oneof the side roads in the area, maybeshe thought that was good enough.I still see many people on phonesand such while driving, no good!”

“Th e world over,” lamentedSarah Crompton.

“Here in UK drivers drive andtext. I got behind a driver who wason her phone and still driving –

round a roundabout.Only one hand on the steering wheel!”

“At least she stopped,”reasoned Mary Kay Horton Jungquist.

Gina Twellmannsuggested putting things into perspective:“If you’re worried aboutthis, I’d suggest nottraveling to some othercountries. Driving in

Cloverdale is pretty tame.”– Jennifer Lang, editor

Chamber renews casino pleaBy Jennifer LangB.C. Lottery Corporation offi cials are

meeting with Cloverdale business leaders Monday to discuss local concerns over a South Surrey casino proposal that’s sup-posedly been green lighted.

Both the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association are challenging plans for a 200-suite hotel with convention centre and casino proposed for 10 Avenue and 168 Street, arguing Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino should be expanded instead.

On June 30, Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce executive director Bill Reid made an impassioned plea on behalf of Fraser Downs at the Cloverdale BIA an-nual general meeting.

“It’s going to take some eff ort on behalf of the business community and our sup-

porters in Cloverdale to make a case for us protecting what we’ve got,” Reid said.

Reid wants assurance from the B.C. Lot-tery Corp. and city council – which would have to approve the new casino – to prove a destination casino in South Surrey won’t compete with – and cannibalize the prof-its of – Fraser Downs, which employs 600 people in the casino and along the back-stretch and is the cornerstone of B.C.’s har-ness racing industry.

Reid hoped to set up a stakeholders group that could be galvanized to march on City Hall or the BCLC if necessary.

“We’re not taking this lying down,” he said. “We’re going to win this one. We need to win it, to be honest with you.”

Th e business groups have also requested a meeting with Surrey city council.

“I’m not a great fan of casinos, but on the other hand I’ve watched the one in Lang-

ley City really be an economic generator,”said Cloverdale BIA director Terry Lister.“Th ere’s probably only room for one big fa-cility in Surrey, and it’s already established.”

But this week fractures appeared in thecommon Cloverdale front. Cloverdale BIAexecutive director Paul Orazietti counseledcaution, pointing to a number of outstand-ing factors that need to be considered.

As a result, Orazietti said he believesthe application will be slowed down, andcalled lobbying eff orts opposing the pro-posal “premature.”

He counseled caution until more de-tails are known aft er the July 16 meeting.“Th ere’s no need to get the placards andthe pitchforks.”

Meanwhile, observers say a report on thefuture of B.C.’s horse racing industry is im-minent, something that will factor into dis-cussion around Fraser Downs.

LUMBERSIZINGAfter surfacing, a board might be reduced by as much as 1/4” on each side, but it will still be identified by the original size. So in other words, a “two-by-four”, is actually only 1-1/2” by 3-1/2” in size. This can be misleading to a novice when lumber is referred to in sizes which are not the actual dimensions.

By Jennifer LangTh rough hard work and determination, environ-

mental leadership students at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary have won a $1,000 award in the National High School Climate Challenge.

Th e students took top prize for taking an active role in keeping their school – and community – green.

Th e prize was awarded late last month at a year-end wrap-up party for Environment Club members at George Greenaway Park, among trees students planted three years ago for Surrey Parks’ Releaf program.

On hand for the presentation was Olympic ath-lete Nathan Vadeboncoeur, who advocates for action on the environment as a Clean Air Champion with the High School Climate Challenge program.

“It’s great to see these students taking what they

have learned about climate change and making somereal, tangible changes as a result,” Vandeboncoeursaid.

Th e annual challenge requires the completion of asmany 140 “Acts of Green” as possible over the courseof the school year.

Lord Tweedsmuir’s students have eagerly risen tothe challenge for three years, building up projects inenergy conservation, launching transport campaigns,a water project, park and tree initiatives.

Th is past school year, they also completed projectsfor BC Hydro, TransLink and Pulse Energy.

Th ey’re hoping to create a new community garden, with some of the funds. Th e remainder will pay forongoing supplies and related costs.

“We will put this money to good use in our com-munity,” says Grade 10 student Puneet Sidhu.

Th e challenge has acted as an excellent catalyst forgrowth in the school’s environmental activities, saysSusan Hunter-Jivung, a physics teacher and Environ-ment Team leader at Lord Tweedsmuir.

Th is year, the school launched the Surrey SchoolsEnvironmental Leadership Team, holding a mini-conference, a green science fair, and other activities.

Th e High School Climate Challenge is run by thenon-profi t society Clean Air Champions, with fundsfrom the City of Surrey and the Honda Foundation.

Th e students also received a $1,250 school bursaryfrom the City of Surrey’s Lend-a-Hand program, inexchange for cleaning garbage from George Green-away Park each week.

Pushing beyond the comfort zone

By Jennifer LangIt’s not every family

that fi nds itself with three champions in its midst.

But Amy Smith, her brother Patrick, and dad Stephen have all been named Canadian champions in Taekwon-do.

Th ey each won their respective classes in the American Taekwondo Association/World Traditional Taekwondo Union.

Th e Smiths train locally at Cloverdale Black Belt Academy, where their achieve-ments are being cel-ebrated, and are helping to inspire those around them.

“It is always reward-ing to see our students overcome obstacles and achieve success,” says Karen Bennett, co-owner of CBBA, and a competitive Taekwondo champion herself.

“Th e Smiths not only had the courage to step outside of their comfort zone and try a new challenge, but they had the determination to see it come to fruition.”

Patrick, sparring champion for fi rst degree black belt (boys aged 12-14), is autis-tic. His parents were told he’d never achieve a Grade 1 reading level much less excel at martial arts training. Th ese days he’s looking forward to learning to drive – and attending university.

Amy, who took fi rst place in both spar-ring and forms in fi rst

degree black belt (girls 12-14), is also on the autism spectrum.

But it’s their dad, Stephen, who has Multiple Sclerosis, a degenerative nerve condition, who may have faced the biggest challenge in taking up the physically demand-ing martial art.

His MS meant some-times he had to look at his feet to know where they were (he couldn’t feel them), and an

instructor had to stand behind him, just in case he lost his balance.

He earned fi rst place in forms in his division, too, earning the Smith family a hat-trick.

No wonder mom Sue Smith, also a student at the academy, is so proud: “Stephen and I never thought we would become parents,” she said, explaining how the couple waited 14 years before wel-coming Patrick into their “hearts and our home.”

Like his twin siblings, Amy and Noah, he came into the Smith family from Kazakhstan through adoption.

“[Th ey] have consis-tently amazed us with their drive and zeal for life and all it has to off er,” Sue says.

Now that he’s watched three family members have success, brother Noah is think-ing about entering the competition for Canada Champ next year.

Th e Taekwondo as-sociation Cloverdale Black Belt Academy

belongs to, meanwhile, has just partnered with Autism Speaks, an autism science and advocacy organization.

“Th is is near and dear to our hearts,” Karen Bennett says, turning back to her admiration for the Smiths.

“Th ey deserve a lot of recognition – they’re such a special family.”

OT ban begins at ICBCUnionized ICBC workers have begun an over-

time ban as part of job action aimed at spurring the auto insurer to give ground in contract talks.

Th e ban began July 6 and follows a Labour Rela-tions Board ruling that found ICBC was bargain-ing in bad faith by refusing to discuss wages and benefi ts until a provincial review of the corporation concludes.

Th e two sides are expected to resume negotia-tions later this month.

COPE 378 issued 72-hour strike notice in June but union leaders indicated they would ramp up job action very slowly, in an eff ort to pressure the gov-ernment without aff ecting drivers.

Fireworks fun for people, not pets

Sometimes when there is a thunderstorm or loud noises outside, pets will hide under the bed in order to try to protect themselves.

Along with warm summer nights come barbecues, campfi res and fi reworks. While the sonic-boom of pyrotechnics may be thrilling for us, it is not as enjoyable for many of our furry friends. Fireworks can cause animals to panic, putting both pets and people in danger. When dogs and cats are frightened

they are more likely to run away from their homes, jump out of open windows or dart into traf-fi c. Stressed pets can also be-have out of character — even scratching or biting people. With summer now underway, the BC SPCA strongly recommends that pet guardians plan for the safety of their household animals dur-ing fi reworks festivities.

Keep pets insideAn indoor pet is a happy pet

on fi reworks night. To help muffl e the noise and prevent animals from escaping, remember to close the windows of your home and draw the curtains. Some pets do well left in a separate room with the radio or television on to mask the sound of fi reworks. Be sure to leave plenty of toys in the room for your pet so that he doesn’t think he’s being isolated as a punishment.

Identifi cationMake sure your pet is wearing identifi cation. Dogs and cats

may try to run away if they feel threatened. Clear, current iden-tifi cation is your best chance to have them returned to you.Don’t console your anxious pet

While it is natural to want to comfort your pet, it is better to use a bright, cheerful voice to send a message that things are fi ne. Avoid saying things like, “it’s OK” or “don’t be scared” in a soft or sympathetic voice. This only reinforces your pet’s fearful

behaviour.

Leave home without them

While you may think it would be fun to bring your dog to the festivi-ties, he or she may not share your view. The strange sights, sounds, and crowds can cause a normally friendly dog to bite if it feels scared or threatened. A quiet

night at home with their favourite toys and treats would prob-ably suit much better!

The BC SPCA also has exercises that can help desensitize your pets to their fear of fi reworks. For more information, visit spca.bc.ca.
