Development Models

• A linear sequential flow

• A phase begins only if the previous is complete

• No process to go back to the previous phase to handle changes in requirements

• Earliest approach used for software development

• Best suited for incremental versions of an existing product

• Requires more time and detailed plan

• Extension of waterfall model

• Process steps are bent upwards after the coding phase

• Higher chance of success over the waterfall model due to the development of test plans early on during the life cycle

• Software is developed during the implementation phase, so no early prototypes of the software are produced

• Adjusting scope is difficult and expensive

• This also will reduce the iterations that may occur in waterfall approach

• Less emphasis on planning tasks and more emphasis on development

• Developers and customers must be committed to rapid-fire activities in an abbreviated time frame

• Combines the features of the prototyping model and the waterfall model

• The spiral model is favored for large, expensive, and complicated projects

• Estimates become more realistic as work progresses, because important issues are discovered earlier

• High cost and time to reach the final product

• Needs special skills to evaluate the risks and assumptions

• Iterative and incremental development

• Requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between cross-functional teams

• Face to face communication and continuous inputs from customer representative leaves no space for guesswork

• High quality software in least possible time duration and satisfied customer

• Documentation is done at later stages

• Skilled software developers
