SUNDAY SERVICES THIS SUMMER: We will be holding our Sunday morn-

ing Bible Class and Divine Service at the Chapel of the Cross on the campus

of Luther Seminary throughout the rest of the summer.

From the Luther Seminary website: The Chapel of the Cross is located in

Northwestern Hall, which was built in 1967. The brick room has the generalshape of a Greek cross. Four columns of small, colored windows punctuate the

walls in front and back. A permanent bronze sculpture of Christ on the cross

rises among the pews. A bronze candelabra holding 7 candles hangs above

the freestanding altar. Heavy stone slabs create the altar, pulpit and bap-

tismal font. A Cassavant organ and rebuilt 1901 Steinway grand piano are

located in the rear of the chapel. The chapel is air-conditioned.

Parking is free but is restricted to the parking lots and the non-residential

    side of the streets.

A Brief History of the Chapel and Student Center of University Lutheran Chapel

University Lutheran Chapel and Student Center was erected by the Minnesota Districto the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to meet the needs o the University o Min-nesota students. A lot o two hundred by two hundred twenty eet was purchased at thecorner o Eleventh and University Avenues. Ground or the Chapel and Student Center

was broken March 27, 1949. Te cornerstone laying ceremony was August 16, 1949in conjunction with the Minnesota District Convention. Te Chapel was dedicatedQuasimodogeniti Sunday, April 16, 1950.

Te Chapel and Center were designed by Lang and Raugland, Architects. Te o-cal point o the Chapel is a beautiul black marble altar with a 24 oot cross outlinedby stained glass windows which were added in 1955. Te building was nanced withmonies raised throughout Minnesota at a cost o $210,000. It was urnished by variousgroups connected with Lutheran student work on the campus, including the LWML o

the Minnesota District, the Gamma Delta alumni group, the Gamma Delta MothersClub, the University Chapel Guild, and individual donors. Te students raised $5000toward the building itsel and another $3,600 or the pipe organ.

Te Chapel and Student Center chapel student center underwent an almost $200,000renovation in 1974 that resulted in a very modern, 70s look, replete with the colorsand textures o the decade. Te chapel itsel also underwent radical changes. Pews weretorn out; the chancel was closed o; and the entire liturgical setting was reoriented. Awooden altar was placed at the side o the nave around which the congregants seated

themselves in a an-shaped conguration deemed more useul or the contemporaryservices. Te Chapel was restored to its original conguration (less the pews) in 1990.

Over the years the Chapel and Student Center have been home to hundreds o studentswho have heard the Word o God, received the Holy Sacraments, studied the HolyScriptures, and grown in their Faith. It has also been home to a growing congregation onon-students composed o people o all ages, rom inants to retirees.

In April o 2011 the Minnesota South Districts Mission and Finance Committeesannounced their plan to sell the Chapel. In September o the same year, in spite o the

outcry raised by people rom across the country and around the world, the MinnesotaSouth Districts Board o Directors voted to sell the Chapel. On September 23, 2011,the Board o Directors signed a Purchase Agreement to sell the Chapel to Doran Devel-opment LLC or $3,500,000. Ater a prolonged ght to save the Chapel, the MinnesotaSouth District Convention, contrary to the wishes o the Ofcers and Directors o theDistrict, granted the congregation o University Lutheran Chapel $2,000,000 to relo-cate her campus ministry and congregation. Te nal re-negotiated price or the sale was$3,250,000. It is great sorrow that we dispose o and deconsecrate this place which hasbeen a bastion o the Gospel and o aithulness on the University o Minnesota campusor the past 62 years.
