The goal of this Q-class is to give you the tools necessary to make a successful transition to college life, while also introducing you to all the spectacular resources that Collins has to offer. By learning to embrace all of Collins's core values and de-mystifying the freshman college experience, you will find yourself making new friends and building community. My goal as an instructor is to give you the support and resources you need to accomplish your own personal goals at IU.

    Class Objectives

Come to class with your gorgeous faces, brilliant minds (filled with the knowledge from the previous nights assignment), a pen/pencil and notebook. You are allowed one unexcused absence for the entire course. Each unexcused absence after that will cause your final letter grade to drop down a step (if your final grade is an A+ and you have two unexcused absences, you will be dropped down to a A). Arriving 5+ minutes late to class or leaving class early twice will also count as one unexcused absence. I can excuse an absence if its an illness, a family emergency, or a religious obligation (see the religious holidays form on Oncourse). You will be allowed excused absences as long as you provide proper documentation (such as a doctor's note).

    Attendance Policy Grading Scale A+: 97-100 A: 93-96 A-: 90-92 B+: 87-89 B: 83-86 B-: 80-82 C+: 77-79 C: 73-76 C-: 70-72 D+: 67-69 D: 63-66 D-: 60-62 F: anything less than 60 A: Superior/Excellent B: Good/Better than average C: Competent/Average D: Minimum Passing F: Failing

Class Policy We will be doing a lot of super rad stuff in Q-class, but in order to make this class a success I need your help! (please read that last sentence in the voice of Dora the Explorer) so you must refrain from: coming to class unprepared, using your laptop and/or phone, making defamatory (racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.) remarks, sleeping, listening to music, chatting about unrelated material, doing homework for other classes, and being disrespectful to others in the classroom.

    Youre the coolest!

What are we doing for homework? How much is it worth? Who am I? Fear not! These assignments are straight-forward. As for your existential crisis, that might take some time to work out. Reading Responses 20 points. We will be doing topical readings for homework and discussing them in class. In order to prepare for discussion, I ask you to type a one page, double spaced response, in a clear to read font, to a question Ill post for each reading in the Assignments section on Oncourse. Your lowest grade for one assignment will be dropped. Visit a Council 10 points. Go to a meeting of any of the Collins councils or student groups. This is a perfect chance to learn more about a group at Collins you might want to get involved with. Fill out the worksheet (its on Oncourse) and have the VP/Chair of the organization sign that you attended and turn it in to me! DUE WEEK 7 Submit to the Collins Columns10 points. Create anything, and I mean anything (as long as you check with me beforehand), and submit it to the Collins Columns! (there will be more information on how to do this in class) DUE WEEK 6 Show and Tell 10 points. Please bring in one item and one song that reminds you of home, and one item you have acquired since you came to IU. Write a short paragraph for each of your items and your song about what they mean to you, and turn those in on Oncourse. Be prepared to talk about your selections in class! RA Sponsored Events10 points. The RAs of Collins will be putting on events on various topics during these 8 weeks. You are required to attend four of these programs to receive full credit. Attendance will be taken at each program. Theyre like mini field-trips! There will be more information on this in class.

The Q Project! 40 points. This project is the diamond encrusted tiara on top of all of your Q-class efforts. This is a great opportunity to help build community at Collins by putting on any program you'd like or by joining a Council! This will be discussed in greater detail in class, including a break down of each component of the project and its point value. Extra Credit? There are two opportunities for extra credit that can boost your final grade up one step (from an A- to an A, a C to a C+, etc.). You will only receive credit for ONE of these opportunities. The first option is to attend a Q project event and write a small paragraph reflection on what you experienced at the event. The second option is to write a rap about Collins, with a theme being one of the core values weve discussed and perform it for our class.

Late Work Policy If an assignment is not turned in on

the day that it is due, 10% is docked for each day (including weekends) that it is late. So exercise that punctuality muscle I know you all have!

Plagiarism If I find that you have committed

academic dishonesty on an assignment for this course (I will give you a handout specifying exactly what academic dishonesty means), you will receive no points for the assignment, and I will report your act to the Dean of Students. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please consult the Code at: www.dsa.indiana.edu/Code/index1.html

My main man, Ralph L. Collins, believes that youre all amazing students, prove him right!
