Pearl Goodman

11 – 24 April

At the age of 96 and a half, true Cicestrian icon and widow of celebrated Chichester artist David Goodman, Pearl is holding her debut art exhibition!

Prompted to paint while she convalesced from colon cancer, Pear recounts :

“I always illustrated my books with little cartoon figures, but I never thought I could paint. But then my daughter Caroline gave me some paints. That was about two years ago, and I thought I couldn’t be bothered. I just thought ‘I can’t paint!’ But then six months ago, I started. I have done 20. They are a mixture of what I call pop art and painting in old age.”

Over her extraordinary life she has been a singer and performer, both in Sussex and in the

1940s as a founder member of the famous Theatre Workshop with Joan Littlewood, touring the country in a lorry doing avant-garde theatre and singing with Ewan MacColl. She left Theatre Workshop to become a mother of three girls and wife of the artist, businessman and Chichester conservationist David Goodman. At the age of 70 Pearl began to write, producing and illustrating two successful books, A String of Pearl’s and More Pearl’s, a witty and poignant account of growing up in Chichester, which was adapted for the stage at the Minerva. When she was 15 Pearl won a scholarship to art school, but her parents couldn’t afford for her to go. This is the first exhibition of her paintings. Her delightful, humorous and colourful acrylics in the naïve style will be exhibited in the Foyer 11– 24 April. The proceeds will be donated to St Wilfrid’s Hospice – where she sang at its inauguration.

For this exhibition, the charity are delighted to have the support and expertise of Dr Sharon-Michi Kusunoki, internationally renowned Curator and Executive Director of Surrealism and the Arts, who is advisor for this project.

Guest exhibitors include well-known local artist and sculptor Maureen Brigden, designer, pattern cutter and seamstress Maria Pulley, ceramic artist Annie Flitcroft and printer Heather Lowe. Creative adults and children have been challenged to design and produce a piece of textile art using a pack of 25 fabric squares purchased from the charity. Kim Tattersall

23 May - 4 June

Kim Tattersall comes from a textile background, specialising in print, and is very much driven by process and materials. Her fascination with surface and texture, be it shiny/matt, rough/smooth, or the play of light and shadow, is evidenced is her previous textile works.

Kim draws inspiration from nature and her work is underpinned by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi - the beauty of imperfection found in nature. Being a keen photographer, she is never without a camera in her pocket.

This exhibition is the start of a collection of glass works exploring the interweaving of two

disciplines - textiles and glass, where one informs the other.
