New Beginnings The UT Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery welcomes Dr.

Maria Codreanu as new faculty. She is a recent graduate of our vascular surgery fellowship program. Her practice will be primarily based at Me¬-

morial Hermann Northeast Hospital. Dr. Codreanu, we are happy to have you as part of our vascular surgery group!

Dr. Tom Nguyen also joined the faculty in August. He trained at Columbia Uni-versity Medical Center in New York and Emory University in Atlanta. He spe-cializes in complex open heart valve surgery as well as percutaneous valve re-placement. He is based at the Medical Center Campus.

In the

SpotlightDr. Azizzadeh was presented with the latest edition of Vascular

and Endovascular Challenges Update at the prestigious Charing Cross International Symposium helf in London, UK this April. This was for his chapter on “Outcomes of TEVAR for treatment of Traumatic Aortic Injury” co-authored by Drs. Charlton-Ouw, Saqib, Estrera, and Safi. In addition, he also lectured on “Medical management is still the treatment of choice for uncomplicated type B aortic dissection.”

Dr. Charlton-Ouw was invited to speak on “Role of Diet in Cardiovascular Disease” at the Summer Health Summit organized by the Montgomery Heart and Wellness Center, Houston held in June.

Dr. Estrera spoke on “Pre-operative Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Patients Undergoing Open Thoracoabdominal and Descending Thoracic Aneurysm Repair” at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery conference at Minneapolis held on May 4-8, 2013. He was also an invited discussant at the Liverpool Aortic Surgery Symposium May 24 -25 2013.
