Brooke has worked with the Lung DOWG since January of 2009. Martha and Lana have a combined 30 years of ex- perience working in the lung DOWG and are both celebraƟng their daughters’ weddings next year! Su- san started with the UWCCC on October 3rd and is the newest member. This summer was very exciƟng for lung cancer research. In June the results of the “Lung Cancer Screen- ing Trial” were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This naƟonal study showed that an- nual low-dose CT scans can help reduce lung cancer mortality by 20%. UnƟl now, no screening method had proven eecƟve at reducing mortality from this disease, and since lung cancer will claim approxi- mately 157,000 lives this year, implemenƟng screening programs across the country will save thousands of lives! The lung group has been working hard to resume enrollment in a trial using NM404, a novel imaging agent developed by the Weichert Laboratory in UW’s Dept of Radiology. It was recently re-approved by the FDA and will conƟnue enrollment in late 2011. The group is also conducƟng an internaƟonal trial with the University of Taiwan invesƟgaƟng geneƟc determinants of acute toxiciƟes from carboplaƟn and paclitaxel, the most commonly used regimen in NSCLC. They are also conducƟng their rst biomarker- driven invesƟgator iniƟated trial (IIT) through WON, invesƟgaƟng the possible relaƟonship between kras mutaƟons and treatment response using sorafenib. They recently opened a rst-line trial in advanced NSCLC using crizoƟnib, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that was approved by the FDA for use in NSCLC paƟents whose tumors contain the EML4ALK gene rearrangement. WON Mee ng Recap

The fall WON mee ng was held on Octo-

ber 22nd at a new venue: the Wisconsin 

Ins tutes for Discovery (WID).   WID’s mis-

sion is to bring scien sts and researchers 

from a variety of disciplines together while 

providing opportuni es for interac on 

between the University and the Madison 

community.  Since WON is about fostering 

collabora on between community sites 

and academic centers across Wisconsin, 

WID provided a perfect mee ng place.   

Other changes this year included new CRA 

breakout sessions and an Industry Meet 

and Greet.  The lunch me speaker, Dr. 

Jeffrey Kanne, Associate Professor of Radi-

ology, gave an especially relevant and in-

teres ng talk on the risks of diagnos c 

radiology.   

Thank you to all who a ended the

Reminder: Inform Collaborators of All Changes

When submi ng a change of protocol or consent form to the IRB, remember to send a copy of the change (protocol amendment; revised consent form; etc.) to any collaborators on the study, including:  PRC  CRU (formerly CTRC))  3P Lab  HL Protocol Builders 

 

Collaborators need  me to review poten-al changes for their impact to study mate-

rials or documents.  Early no fica on to collaborators is essen al so that everyone has  me to review a protocol change well in advance of IRB approval.  Refer to the UWCCC website for more de-tails on the PPO Change Process and  Bea‐con PRL Change Process.

OnCore Tip of the Month

Do you get too many emails? Of course you do! Get fewer QA’s in your inbox by u lizing the Data Field Defini ons (DFDs) when entering informa on into OnCore. 

Tip for Subject Registra on Data Entry

In the CRA Console > FAQs Tab always check the FAQs before you register a new subject.  See graphic below. This will list all the condi onal fields that need to be entered (for example: arm dates, treat-ment dates).  These are different for every protocol, so make sure to check them every  me. If you have any ques ons or if the FAQs are incomplete, contact your Program Manager (or Regulatory Staff responsible for entering FAQs) to have them updated accordingly.

 

Tip for Regulatory Data Entry

Protocol and subject reportable events (devia ons, non-compliance issues, and unan cipated events) that are submi ed to the IRB need to be entered into OnCore so they appear on the Protocol Sum-mary Reports that are submi ed to the Data and Safety Monitoring Commi ee (DSMC). The DSMC Protocol Summary reports pull this informa on from the PC Console > Reviews > IRB sec on when “Reportable Event (Non‐SAE)” is entered in the IRB Record. See the green box in the graphic below.   

 

 

 

Enter the Review Reason of “Unspecified”, Review Ac on of “Reviewed”, and a short summary in the Descrip on field. Leave the Comments field blank. For more informa on, please see the IRB DSMC Reportable Event deSOP.
