UWCCC DOWG of the Month: Thoracic (aka Lung)
DOWG Leaders: Anne Traynor, MD, Medical Oncology & Tracey Weigel, MD, Surgical Oncology
Lung cancer physicians: Toby Campbell, MD, Tien Hoang, MD, and Bo Chao, MD, Medical Oncology
Program Manager: Hilary Hernan, MPH Regulatory Specialist: Brooke Mechelke, BS
Study Coordinators: Lana Hammes, LPN, Martha Larson, RN, and Susan Masterson, MSW
Lung Cancer Coordinator: Jenni Verhoeven, RN, MS Student Support: Jamie Huenink
Hilary has been with the lung DOWG since July 2010 and with the UWCCC since 2005. Brooke has
worked with the Lung DOWG since January of 2009. Martha and Lana have a combined 30 years of ex-
perience working in the lung DOWG and are both celebra ng their daughters’ weddings next year! Su-
san started with the UWCCC on October 3rd and is the newest member.
This summer was very exci ng for lung cancer research. In June the results of the “Lung Cancer Screen-
ing Trial” were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This na onal study showed that an-
nual low-dose CT scans can help reduce lung cancer mortality by 20%. Un l now, no screening method
had proven effec ve at reducing mortality from this disease, and since lung cancer will claim approxi-
mately 157,000 lives this year, implemen ng screening programs across the country will save thousands
of lives!
The lung group has been working hard to resume enrollment in a trial using NM404, a novel imaging
agent developed by the Weichert Laboratory in UW’s Dept of Radiology. It was recently re-approved by
the FDA and will con nue enrollment in late 2011. The group is also conduc ng an interna onal trial
with the University of Taiwan inves ga ng gene c determinants of acute toxici es from carbopla n and
paclitaxel, the most commonly used regimen in NSCLC. They are also conduc ng their first biomarker-
driven inves gator ini ated trial (IIT) through WON, inves ga ng the possible rela onship between kras
muta ons and treatment response using sorafenib. They recently opened a first-line trial in advanced
NSCLC using crizo nib, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that was approved by the FDA for use in NSCLC
pa ents whose tumors contain the EML4‐ALK gene rearrangement.

cludes radia on given as part of the chem-
otherapy protocol's research ques on
(and not just as a service), the radia on
oncologists should be listed as key person-

WON Mee ng Recap
The fall WON mee ng was held on Octo-
ber 22nd at a new venue: the Wisconsin
Ins tutes for Discovery (WID). WID’s mis-
sion is to bring scien sts and researchers
from a variety of disciplines together while
providing opportuni es for interac on
between the University and the Madison
community. Since WON is about fostering
collabora on between community sites
and academic centers across Wisconsin,
WID provided a perfect mee ng place.
Other changes this year included new CRA
breakout sessions and an Industry Meet
and Greet. The lunch me speaker, Dr.
Jeffrey Kanne, Associate Professor of Radi-
ology, gave an especially relevant and in-
teres ng talk on the risks of diagnos c
radiology.
Thank you to all who a ended the
mee ng. The spring mee ng will be held
on April 21st, 2012 – mark your calendar!

Reminder: Inform Collaborators of All Changes
When submi ng a change of protocol or consent form to the IRB, remember to send a copy of the change (protocol amendment; revised consent form; etc.) to any collaborators on the study, including: PRC CRU (formerly CTRC)) 3P Lab HL Protocol Builders
Collaborators need me to review poten-al changes for their impact to study mate-
rials or documents. Early no fica on to collaborators is essen al so that everyone has me to review a protocol change well in advance of IRB approval. Refer to the UWCCC website for more de-tails on the PPO Change Process and Bea‐con PRL Change Process.

OnCore Tip of the Month
Do you get too many emails? Of course you do! Get fewer QA’s in your inbox by u lizing the Data Field Defini ons (DFDs) when entering informa on into OnCore.
Tip for Subject Registra on Data Entry
In the CRA Console > FAQs Tab always check the FAQs before you register a new subject. See graphic below. This will list all the condi onal fields that need to be entered (for example: arm dates, treat-ment dates). These are different for every protocol, so make sure to check them every me. If you have any ques ons or if the FAQs are incomplete, contact your Program Manager (or Regulatory Staff responsible for entering FAQs) to have them updated accordingly.
Tip for Regulatory Data Entry
Protocol and subject reportable events (devia ons, non-compliance issues, and unan cipated events) that are submi ed to the IRB need to be entered into OnCore so they appear on the Protocol Sum-mary Reports that are submi ed to the Data and Safety Monitoring Commi ee (DSMC). The DSMC Protocol Summary reports pull this informa on from the PC Console > Reviews > IRB sec on when “Reportable Event (Non‐SAE)” is entered in the IRB Record. See the green box in the graphic below.
Enter the Review Reason of “Unspecified”, Review Ac on of “Reviewed”, and a short summary in the Descrip on field. Leave the Comments field blank. For more informa on, please see the IRB DSMC Reportable Event deSOP.
