Climbing Carnival

Organized by Climbing Partner Prize sponsors

Climb On! Singapore 2011 was a great success thanks to the wonderful climbers and members of the public who turned up to inject life to the event. This year was the first time we had the Community Fun Climb category and more than 150 members of the public signed up to climb at the carnival. Climbing is really becoming more popular, and we at Climb On! Singapore are delighted to be helping the community discover the joy of climbing.

On 15 Oct morning, students from Rainbow Centre, a local special education school, came to experience climbing at the carnival. Accompanied by their parents and teachers, the children tried their hand at bouldering and top-rope climbing at the Water-Venture Pasir Ris Community Tower. Climb Asia has been working with Rainbow Centre to conduct enrichment classes for the students, and we are really happy to see them enjoying themselves at the carnival.

The carnival started at 12pm and we could see many climbers already challenging themselves on the harder problems. With 20 walls, 63 problems and 135988 points up for grabs, there was little time to waste. The qualifiers for the Ultimate Campus Showdown ran concurrently with the carnival and saw off many challenges on the campus routes. Arul and Janet were the fastest men and women qualifier, clocking in a dizzying 5.67 seconds and 8.14s respectively. Find out more about the Ultimate Campus Showdown in page XXX.

There was an impromptu birthday celebration amidst the action. Our climbing community is indeed a close-knit one. As the carnival went on, we had the Metolius Pull Up Contest during which many climbers pulled their hearts out to win a pair of Metolius Rock Rings. You can read more about the contest on page YYY. This year, Climb On! Singapore 2011 was held in conjunction with Concert By The Beach. This collaboration made the party atmosphere even more apparent with local bands rocking it out onstage. Popcorn, burgers and frozen yogurt were available at stands around the event site to feed the hungry climbers. There was even a Guitar Hero contest!

At around 6pm, we heard people saying Ponti Hardiyanto from Indonesia had finished all 63 problems. Were the problems too easy for him? He had cruised the hardest problem, the 9998-points problem on the 7-metre mega roof. With 2 more hours to go, the other climbers gunning for the Enduro Open Men podium started getting their game up. At 8pm, the carnival came to a close and the scores were tabulated. The Special Guest, Mr Chan Boon Fui, Deputy Chief Executive of People’s Association was around to present the prizes for the Open category winners and witness the spectacular glow-in-the-dark Ultimate Campus Showdown Finals. The night ended on a high with a dynamic display of light, style and raw energy with Dennis and Janet crowned the Ultimate Campus King and Queen.

We will be back next year with more interesting bouldering problems and walls! Thanks everyone!

“5...6...7...8..9..10...” We could all hear the crowd counting for every contestant who went up on the Metolius Rock Rings to do as many pullups as they can.

We knew that climbers can pull, but we want to know just how many pull ups our local climbers are capable of. With this special fringe contest at the climbing carnival, we saw climbers of all ages demonstrate just how strong they are. Children as young as seven queued up to crank on the Metolius Rock Rings, and their ability to do pullups was an eye-opener and a jaw-dropper.

Nearly 130 climbers tried their hand at the pull up contest. And many of them realised that doing a pull up on a Rock Ring was way more intense than doing one on a bar. After the contest, some climbers stayed around to try doing front levers! Yes, the Metolius Rock Rings are a great training tool for core exercises too!

Congratulations to our winners!

Ultimate Campus Showdown

Organized by Climbing Partner Prize sponsors

The Dyno competition was a perennial favourite of previous editions of Climb On! Singapore. However, we decided to do something new for Climb On! Singapore 2011 to inject a breath of fresh air to the event.

We are glad to be the first to conduct a glow-in-the-dark campus competition in Singapore! After our qualifiers on 15 Oct during which we found the top 3 fastest men and women climbers to finish the qualifying climbing route without using their legs, the electrifying and stunning finals gave the carnival participants something to shout about. Climbing holds that glowed in the dark, the finalists wearing tee-shirts that they designed with glow-in-the-dark paint and the high energy campus routes got everyone at the edge of their seats.

Dennis and Janet both got to the second last hold of the men’s and women’s route respectively, barely missing out on finishing the physically-demanding routes that allowed them to display their immense power and strength. We are sure the spectators left home dreaming of themselves climbing on these space-age walls.

The event’s appeal reached the ears of the media and it was featured in the local Chinese newspaper the following day. With the Ultimate Campus Showdown being so well-received, it just may feature in future editions of Climb On! Singapore!
