ExecutiveSummaryThisreportdocumentsanupwardtrendinAmericans’concernaboutglobalwarming,asreflectedinseveralkeyindicatorstrackedsince2008,includingsubstantialincreasesinAmericans’certaintythatglobalwarmingishappeningandharmingpeopleintheUnitedStatesnow.ThepercentageofAmericansthatareveryworriedaboutglobalwarminghasmorethandoubledsinceitslowestpointin2011.IncreasingnumbersofAmericanssaytheyhavepersonallyexperiencedglobalwarmingandthattheissueispersonallyimportanttothem.Detailsontheseandothermeasuresofglobalwarmingbeliefsandattitudesaredescribedbelow:
• SevenintenAmericans(71%)thinkglobalwarmingishappening,anincreaseofeightpercentagepointssinceMarch2015.OnlyaboutoneineightAmericans(13%)thinkglobalwarmingisnothappening.Americanswhothinkglobalwarmingishappeningoutnumberthosewhothinkitisnotbymorethan5to1.
• Americansarealsobecomingcertainglobalwarmingishappening–47%are"extremely"or"very"sureitishappening,anincreaseof10percentagepointssinceMarch2015.Bycontrast,farfewer–7%–are"extremely"or"verysure"globalwarmingisnothappening.
• OverhalfofAmericans(54%)understandthatglobalwarmingismostlyhuman-caused.Bycontrast,oneinthree(33%)sayitisduemostlytonaturalchangesintheenvironment.
• OnlyaboutoneinsevenAmericans(15%)understandthatnearlyallclimatescientists(morethan90%)areconvincedthathuman-causedglobalwarmingishappening.
• MorethansixintenAmericans(63%)saytheyareatleast"somewhatworried"aboutglobalwarming.Aboutoneinfive(22%)are"veryworried"aboutit–thehighestlevelssinceoursurveysbegan,andtwicetheproportionthatwere"veryworried"inMarch2015.
• TwointhreeAmericansfeel"interested"inglobalwarming(67%),andmorethanhalffeel"disgusted"(55%)or"helpless"(52%).Fewerthanhalffeel"hopeful"(44%).
• NearlytwointhreeAmericans(64%)thinkglobalwarmingisaffectingweatherintheUnitedStates,andoneinthreethinkweatherisbeingaffected"alot"(33%),anincreaseof8percentagepointssinceMay2017.
• AmajorityofAmericansthinkglobalwarmingmadeseveralextremeeventsin2017worse,includingtheheatwavesinCalifornia(55%)andArizona(51%),hurricanesHarvey,Irma,andMaria(54%),andwildfiresinthewesternU.S.(52%).
• MorethanthreeinfourAmericans(78%)areinterestedinlearningabouthowglobalwarmingisorisnotaffectingextremeweatherevents.
• MorethanfourintenAmericans(44%)saytheyhavepersonallyexperiencedtheeffectsofglobalwarming,anincreaseof13percentagepointssinceMarch2015.
• FourintenAmericans(42%)thinkpeopleintheUnitedStatesarebeingharmedbyglobalwarming"rightnow."Theproportionthatbelievespeoplearebeingharmed"rightnow"hasincreasedby10percentagepointssinceMarch2015.

• HalfofAmericansthinkthey(50%)ortheirfamily(54%)willbeharmedbyglobalwarming.EvenmorethinkglobalwarmingwillharmpeopleintheU.S.(67%),theworld'spoororpeopleindevelopingcountries(both71%),futuregenerationsofpeople(75%)orplantandanimalspecies(75%).
• MostAmericansthinkglobalwarmingwillhavefutureimpacts,causingmoremeltingglaciers(67%),severeheatwaves(64%),droughtsandwatershortages(63%),floods(61%),andotherimpactsoverthenext20years.
• TwointhreeAmericans(67%)saytheissueofglobalwarmingiseither"extremely"(12%),"very"(19%),or"somewhat"(37%)importanttothempersonally,whileoneinthree(33%)sayitiseither"nottoo"(19%)or"notatall"(14%)importantpersonally.Theproportionthatsayitispersonallyimportanthasincreasedby11percentagepointssinceMarch2015.
• NearlyfourintenAmericans(38%)saytheydiscussglobalwarmingwithfamilyandfriends"often"or"occasionally,"anincreaseof12percentagepointssinceMarch2015.However,moresaythey"rarely"or"never"discussit(62%).Additionally,halfofAmericans(51%)saytheyhearaboutglobalwarminginthemediaatleastonceamonth,andoneinfour(25%)saytheyhearpeopletheyknowtalkaboutglobalwarmingatleastonceamonth.
• MorethanhalfofAmericans(54%)saytheyhavethought"alot"(22%)or"some"(32%)aboutglobalwarming.Fewersaytheyhavethoughtaboutglobalwarmingjust"alittle"(32%)or"notatall"(14%).
• FewAmericansareconfidentthathumanswillreduceglobalwarming.Nearlyhalf(48%)sayhumanscouldreduceglobalwarming,butit’sunclearatthispointwhetherwewilldowhatisnecessary,andoneinfour(25%)saywewon’treduceglobalwarmingbecausepeopleareunwillingtochangetheirbehavior.Only5%sayhumanscanandwillsuccessfullyreduceglobalwarming.
• LargemajoritiesofAmericansthinkofglobalwarmingasanenvironmental(78%),scientific(71%),agricultural(66%),severeweather(65%),health(62%),economic(60%),orpoliticalissue(60%).Fewerthinkitisamoral(41%),nationalsecurity(29%),poverty(28%),socialjustice(26%),orreligiousissue(9%).

1.4.OnlyaboutoneinsevenAmericansunderstandthatalmostallclimatescientists(morethan90%)haveconcludedhuman-causedglobalwarmingishappening.ArecentreviewstudybyJohnCookandcolleagues2foundthatsix,independent,peer-reviewedstudiesabouttheextentofthescientificconsensusaboutglobalwarminghavereachedsimilarconclusions:between90%and100%ofclimatescientistsareconvincedthathuman-causedclimatechangeishappening.Themostrigorousofthesestudiesfoundthat97%ofclimatescientistsareconvincedthathuman-causedclimatechangeishappening.OnlyaboutoneinsevenAmericans(15%)understandthatnearlyallclimatescientists(morethan90%)areconvincedthathuman-causedglobalwarmingishappening.Whileamajorityofthepublic(52%)believesthatmorethanhalfofclimatescientiststhinkhuman-causedglobalwarmingishappening,themostcommonresponse–givenbyoneinfourAmericans(24%)–isthatthey"don'tknow."3
