ELECTION DAY TURKEY AND BISCUIT DINNER

VALLEY FALLS – The Valley Falls United Methodist Church will host a Turkey and Biscuit Dinner on Election Day, November 4. The menu will include turkey and gravy on biscuits and mashed potatoes, vegetables, coleslaw, cranberry sauce, pickles, and assorted pies. CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Al-bany Maritime Ministry at the Port of Albany is launch-ing “Christmas-at-Sea,” gifts to be distributed to sea-farers over the Christmas holidays, before their ships leave Albany for the oceans. Youth groups, scout troops, organizations and individu-als are invited to participate and to gather and assemble “Christmas-at-Sea” boxes. People are asked to find a shoebox, gather items and wrap it. The Maritime Min-istry will include a card and a Christmas message from the Albany Maritime Minis-try’s Seafarer’s Center and friends from the Capital Re-gion. Items that might be placed in the boxes include knit caps, work gloves, socks, writing paper, envelopes, pens, combs or brushes, books, toiletries including shaving cream, and batter-ies. On November 17, the packages may be dropped off from 2pm to 7pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 475 State Street. The Albany Maritime Ministry is a non-profit, 501c(3). HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. WINTER PREP CHECKLIST

Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now.

• Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are under-infl ated, you lose fuel effi cien-cy, so monitor and maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.

• Those who live in particularly cold climates should switch from all-season to winter tires. Much as you wear winter boots to provide more traction and protection than sneakers, so should you equip your ve-hicle with tires that will stand up to winter terrain.

• Check on the status of your battery and its starting power. Cold weather can put more strain on a car battery. A bat-tery that is already weak may not turn over when you need it most.
