5TH ANNUAL STATEWIDE “RECRUIT-

NY” WEEKEND CLIFTON PARK – The Jones-ville Volunteer Fire Depart-ment (JVFD) will open its doors to area residents so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer fire-fighter in their community as part of the fifth annual Re-cruitNY Weekend statewide initiative. Over the last sev-eral years it has been difficult for many fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volun-teers. Consider joining our team in helping us continue to provide an optimum level of service to our community. As part of RecruitNY Week-end, on Saturday, April 25, from 10am to 2pm and on Sunday, April 26, from 12pm to 3pm, JVFD Station 1 and JVFD Station 2 will join vol-unteer fire departments across the state for a unified recruit-ment drive. Throughout the day, members of the Jonesville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and apparatus, allow visitors to try on firefighting turnout gear, conduct equipment demonstrations, provide activities and fascinating informational opportunities, and highlight the rewards and responsibilities that come with being a vol-unteer firefighter. Members will discuss the requirements of a volunteer, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved with the fire department. For area residents looking for more information or who cannot make RecruitNY Week-end, please visit our website at www.jonesvillefire.org or con-tact us at [email protected] with any questions. JVFD Station 1, 953 Main St., Clifton Park; JVFD Station 2, 629 Route 146A, Clifton Park.

TOWN OF STILLWATER ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS’ “FLOOD READINESS”STILLWATER – Melting snows, frozen ground, heavy rains: flood season is here. We can’t con-trol weather, but we can get ready. Make sure your sump pump is in good working condition, if you need one, have a back up. Awareness is key: monitor local news, know escape routes and shelter locations, avoid floodwaters, and inform loved ones of location and evacuations. Also, create a “ready kit” with several days of supplies, and know how to use it. Excellent check-lists are available from the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org or FEMA at www.ready.gov or sign up for the Red Cross flood assistance app at www.redcross.org/mobileapps To learn more about your Stillwater Community Emergency Management Committee, contact Chairman Tom Rinaldi at 944-5263.

Following The Path To A Living Wage

There is a lot of talk about wages these days. People work hard at their jobs and seek reasonable compensation for their efforts. The debate is ongoing about what the appropri-ate wage standards should be, and contrary to all the sound bites it is a very difficult situation, because good intentions can lead to unfortunate consequences. The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County advocates for competitive wages for all who are employed by our member businesses, how-ever an increased Minimum Wage may adversely impact the work force by reducing the number of employees of small, family owned businesses. Seasonal employees, retirees, young people getting valuable work experience, and farm businesses are among those which may be adversely affected by a Minimum Wage hike. Nevertheless, the problem remains: how do we help people ad-vance their careers and attain a reasonable standard of living (and make no mistake, some still live in poverty in Saratoga County)? The answer, in my opinion, is the same as it was during the Industrial Revolution – manufacturing. Manufacturing is on the rise again and we must strongly support the growing number of 21st century, “green” industries. The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County believes that the path to a living wage is through training to obtain the correct skill set for available jobs in local manufacturing companies

and other trades which are actively seeking qualified candidates. Students and others looking for employment should consider 2 and 4 year options plus certificate programs available through community colleges and other area schools which can provide the prerequisite training and skills in a short period of time. It’s surprisingly easy to obtain the skills needed for these jobs! Tech Valley remains a great place to have a productive career with a high quality of life – let’s work to ensure those opportunities are available for all. Marie

Cassie came to us from a local kill shelter. She is beautiful and sweet. She is a little over a year old, spayed, up to date on vaccine and vet checked. She would love to find a home

with a nice warm window to curl up in and a lap to sleep on.

Lab mix - Meet Marie. She is a 4 month old Lab Pyrenees mix. She has bee microchipped,

has all her shots and spayed. She is 90% house trained and walks well on a leash. She love other animals and kids and would make

an outstanding addition to any family. She has been in foster for 2 months and is

now ready to go into a furever home.

DOB 5-28-14. Weight 11 lbs, dachshund/beagle. These two babies are about a year old and were rescued from a hoarding

situation and went into one of our fosters. They are safe

now, are very social and love attention. They do not have to go together and we would love

to find them a forever home, as they deserve the very best. They have age appropriate shots, have been vet check and are ready to go.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

PRAYERSPRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. R.M.R.

GETTING THE BEST PRICE FOR YOUR

HOUSE TO HELP FINANCE YOUR RETIREMENT

(NewsUSA) - Have you for-gotten something in figur-ing where you're going to retire to?

Let's see, you've re-searched which states tax Social Security income (only 14, including Colorado, Con-necticut, Kansas, North Da-kota and Vermont).

And you've even consult-ed the numbers-crunchers at Bankrate.com to learn

which states scored highest overall in everything from cost of living to access to health care (South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, North Da-kota and Wyoming).

But here's a question for all you homeowners: Given the results of a new report from Better Homes and Gar-dens Real Estate -- 57 percent of boomers say they plan to move to a new home in re-tirement -- what are you do-ing right now to make sure your current house fetches a good price to help finance your retirement dreams?

"As people grapple with whether to pull up stakes, there's small margin for er-ror," the New York Times' cov-erage of the report noted.

Here's some tips for pre-paring what's likely your biggest asset for prospective buyers:

* Get rid of the clutter. No doubt you have years worth of memories on display. But they're your memories. And painful as it may be, it's time to accept that not everyone appreciates having turned your den, for example, into a shrine to the '69 Mets.

"Buyers shouldn't be distracted from imagining themselves living in your space," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associate with Sothe-by's in Montclair, New Jersey.

* Think twice before doing any trendy remodeling. Es-pecially if your home is older, you may be tempted to go as far in trying to spruce things up as, say, tearing down a wall between the kitchen and an adjoining room just because Angie's List says creating the feel of more space is "one of the hottest trends in home remodeling."

Well who's to say it'll still be hot in six months or a year?

* Think "curb appeal." There's a reason roof re-placement consistently makes Remodeling maga-zine's annual Cost vs. Value Report, and is up 11.2 per-cent this year over even last year: A roof is the first thing potential buyers notice -- even from down the street -- and you've already lost the sale if yours looks like hell.

"It's a huge turn-off," says O'Neill, "and makes people predisposed to find even more

things they don't like." For the look of luxury at very affordable prices, check out the Value Collection Life-time Designer Shingles from GAF (www.gaf.com), North America's largest roofing manufacturer.

* Fix major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with a sputter-ing boiler?

Enough said.

HIT THE ROAD FOR SPRING AND SAVE

SMART(StatePoint) After months of cold weather, it’s time for blooming flowers, chirp-ing birds and weekend get-aways. Spring is here and it’s a great time for a road trip or spontaneous getaway. Here are a few tips to avoid stress and common budget break-ers.

Snag the Best Deals

For inexpensive road trip ideas, avoid peak-season destinations. Track off-peak deals through online travel blogs and avoid expensive accommodations at five-star hotels by staying at hostels or renting affordable and, at times, luxurious options from local hosts. Spend a night camping or visit a bed and breakfast for a more cost-effective option that can offer a cozy, intimate and more local feel to your

getaway.

Map it Out

Plan your route to cut down on mileage and save on gas. Fuel reward credit cards can also offer major savings nationwide. Consider tak-ing advantage of one with ongoing savings, like the ExxonMobil Smart Card, which provides you with the opportunity to save six cents per gallon when you purchase a minimum of 45 gallons of Exxon- or Mobil-branded fuel in a month.  Savings apply from the first gallon up to 100 gallons each month.

Plus, ExxonMobil is now of-fering new Smart Card mem-bers who apply by June 30, 2015 a savings of 24 cents per gallon on purchases that qualify for the ongoing sav-ings offer during the first two months after the date the account is opened.

Paying with the ExxonMobil

Smart Card helps put money back in your wallet. You can apply at any Exxon- or Mobil-branded location or online at www.ExxonMobilSmart-Card.com where you will also find complete details. Subject to credit approval.

Pack Smart. Plan Ahead

Avoid long toll lines and rest stop detours by pack-ing snacks and other time-saving necessities including a toll tag and an ExxonMobil Speedpass key tag to conve-niently fill up faster with just a wave. Add a universal char-ger to the list to ensure your devices are charged and ready to take full advantage of discount apps and naviga-tion tools.

Before your trip, visit an automotive technician to ensure your car is road-trip ready. And to easily locate the closest Exxon- or Mobil-branded service station, download the ExxonMobil Fuel Finder app for Android

and iPhone.

Get Creative with Ways to Save

In today’s world, there’s a deal for everything you want to do. Pack your itinerary with topnotch dining, luxuri-ous hotel accommodations and adventurous activities at a reduced price through popular discount sites and local deals. For example, most museums offer student discounts or reduced tick-ets during off-peak hours. Be sure to download a site’s mobile app before hitting the road to find last-minute deals where you’re traveling. If you want a more tradition-al way to save while experi-encing the local surround-ings, try packing a picnic by stocking up at the nearest deli.

Have Fun!

With a road trip that’s both fun and cost-conscious, you can enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Plan ahead so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

AGING AND DRIVINGGetting behind the wheel and enjoying the freedom to travel is a luxury few are anxious to abandon. But there comes a time in nearly every person’s life when he or she must take inventory of his or her driving and assess if that next joy ride is a safe and smart decision.

Driving may help older adults remain independent and mo-bile, but the chance for a motor vehicle accident increases as one ages. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says fatal crash rates per mile traveled increase starting at age 75 and increase notably after age 80. This is largely due to in-creased susceptibility to injury and medical complications among older drivers rather than an increased tendency to get into crashes. Road accidents tend to increase around a person’s 65th birthday.

Authorities in Canada require physicians to warn patients if the doctors have any concerns about their patients’ ability to drive. Doctors also must report these concerns. There are no such requirements in the United States, where individual drivers and families must use their own judgement to decide if it is still safe for a particular person to be on the road.

Minor fender benders, traffic citations, trouble remembering directions or frequently visited stores, may be early indica-tions that a driver is no longer at his or her best behind the wheel. Some experts say that families should institute driving directives, much in the way a person would spell out medical desires or end-of-life plans. This way, when the time comes to assess driving ability, the conversation already has been started.

There is no set age when a person’s keys should be taken away, as aging does not guarantee drivers’ abilities will de-cline. In fact, there are many things people can do to prolong their time on the road.

• Get routine vision and hearing checks. These examinations will help to determine your fitness to be on the road and shed light on any issues that need to be addressed. Those who wear contact lenses or glasses may need to update their prescriptions.

• Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can affect the body in many ways, including reducing reaction time. Falling asleep while driving can compromise the safety of drivers, their passen-gers and fellow motorists.

• Know your medications. Certain medications can make you drowsy, so read the labels so you know not to drive while taking them. Speak with your doctor to see if there are any substitutes that won’t affect your performance behind the wheel.

• Recognize your limitations. You may not like driving at night or in inclement weather. Stick to driving when you feel most comfortable.

• Enroll in a refresher course. Sign up for a defensive driving course to review your driving skills. Not only may it make you safer on the road, but it also may help reduce your insurance rates.

Getting older doesn’t mean you have to quit driving right away. Recognize the signs of a decline in driving ability and figure out how long it is safe to remain behind the wheel.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TEEN’S FIRST CAR Many parents contribute money toward the purchase of their teenagers’ first car. But even those who don’t help kids finance the pur-chase of their first vehicle may still want to offer some advice as their teens start to look for the car they will no doubt remember for the rest of their lives.

Different drivers need dif-ferent things out of their vehicles, so a car that might be perfect for adults will not necessarily be the best fit for teen drivers without much experience traversing the nation’s roadways. The following are a few factors to consider when helping teens find their first car.

Size

Teenagers have little to no experience behind the wheel, so it’s best that they not drive cars that are es-pecially small or large right away. According to the Na-tional Highway Traffic Safety Administration, young drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 are significantly overrepre-sented in fatal crashes. The NHTSA suggests such drivers’ immaturity and inexperience plays a significant role in that overrepresentation. So parents likely do not want their chil-dren in the smallest car possible, as such vehicles may not protect teens as adequately as slightly larger vehicles in the case of an accident. In addition, very large cars, such as pickup trucks or SUVs, can be difficult to control and are best suited to older drivers who already have years of driving ex-perience under their belts. A mid-size sedan is big enough to protect teens and their passengers in the case of an accident, and such vehicles are small enough to handle easily.

Passenger capacity

Another factor to consider when shopping for cars for teen-agers is passenger capacity. The more seats there are in a car, the more friends teens can pack into their vehicles. Numer-ous teenagers in a car at once can prove distracting to the driver, and that distraction can pave the way for an auto ac-cident. Steer clear of minivans, SUVs or other vehicles that feature a third row of seats, as teens may be unable to stay focused on the road with so many passengers in tow.

Under the hood

Few teens would not light up at the sight of a muscle car awaiting them in the driveway. But cars that accelerate quickly and those with substantial horsepower and high-performance engines may tempt teens to speed or spark the development of poor driving habits. Look for a vehicle with modest acceleration instead of an imported sports car that teens may be too immature and inexperienced to handle.

Wear and tear

Teens’ first cars are often preowned vehicles, and such cars may have significant wear and tear on some important safety features. Wear and tear may not be a reason to avoid purchas-ing a preowned vehicle, but parents may want to replace the brake pads and tires on recently purchased preowned vehi-cles. Brake pads in strong condition may prove the difference between avoiding an accident or getting into one. In addi-tion, poorly inflated or worn down tires pose a safety risk to teens and their passengers. If such features seem to be worn down, replace them before letting teens hit the open road on their own.

Teens will remember their first cars for the rest of their lives.

Parents can ensure those memories are positive by finding a car that teens can handle comfortably and operate safely.

DID YOU KNOW? Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determining their asking price, but they may not know that certain mileage milestones can affect how prospective buyers view their automobiles. For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer warran-ties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles, which-ever comes first. That may make a vehicle less attractive to buyers or inspire buyers to ask that the price of an extended warranty be deducted from the asking price of the vehicle. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000-mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, including new brakes. Sellers who wish to unload their preowned vehicle as quickly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to selling their ve-hicles and showcase the service records to prospective buy-ers. If not, sellers should be flexible with their asking price, as buyers are likely to know that significant maintenance could be just around the corner for a vehicle that has exceeded the 60,000 mile mark.
