I am I can, a mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the pro-gram. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your com-munity, please visit our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 688-3010 x102 or at [email protected].

Throughout the day, members of the Jonesville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and apparatus, allow visitors to try on fi refi ghting turnout gear, conduct equipment demonstrations, provide activities and fascinating informational opportunities, and highlight the rewards and responsibilities that come with being a vol-unteer fi refi ghter. Members will discuss the requirements of a volunteer, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved with the fi re department. For area residents looking for more information or who cannot make RecruitNY Week-end, please visit our website at www.jonesvillefi re.org or con-tact us at membership@jonesvillefi re.org with any questions. SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE AT THE PUMPThe cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still looking for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driving less will save money, and doing so also reduces fuel consumption and contributes to fewer emissions entering the air, both of which can benefit the en-vironment.
But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commitments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more often than they might prefer. Such driv-ers may be looking for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortunately there are several ways to do just that.
• Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of to-
day’s auto manufacturers now design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular unleaded gas, which is typically listed as “87 octane” at filling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often consid-erably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many drivers may even choose regular un-leaded, but opt for premium gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will increase performance of older engines. But many engines are designed to run smoothly and efficient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unnecessary to choose pre-
mium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.
• Buy when the time is right. Prices at filling stations fluc-tuate on a daily basis, so un-less your car is running on empty, avoid filling up when the prices seem especially
high. Some patience may pay off with several dollars in sav-ings, and those savings can add up to a significant amount of money over time.
• Become a less aggressive driver. Drivers with hectic sched-ules tend to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driving aggressively is unsafe and potentially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the California Energy Commis-sion’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour in-stead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.
• Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempt-ing to leave that roof rack on top of your car after a recent camping trip, but such unnecessary cargo in or on your car makes it harder for the car to get from point A to point B. That forces the car to consume more fuel. Unless your immediate plans include hitting the links or hunkering down at a nearby campsite, remove unnecessary weight from the car so your next trip to the gas station is less expensive.
The cost of fuel can make trips to the filling station into costly excursions. But drivers willing to reconsider conventional wisdom and change their driving habits can save substantial amounts of money over time.

Parents have a host of options at their disposal when the time comes to buy new cars for their families. While dad might have long dreamed of driving the fastest sports car on the market, such a vehicle does not make much practical sense when car trips figure to be made with kids in tow.
Finding the right car for a family depends on a host of factors, as what makes a good vehicle for one family will not always make a great choice for another family right down the street. When choosing a car for their families, parents can consider the following factors to ensure they choose the vehicles that best suit the needs of their broods.
Cost
While cost should not be the only consideration when choos-ing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget be-fore beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people will ever make, which only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive ve-hicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids with college educations to con-sider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, which can be pricey, while buying outright affords vehicle owners to choose the level of coverage they are most comfortable with. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot with the pedal to the metal.
Family size
The size and potential size of the family also must be con-sidered before buying a new car. Kids grow up and get big-ger, and parents who want to have more children down the road should consider just how big they want their family to be before buying a new car. Look for a car that not only suits your family now, but one that will cater to your family’s needs down the road as well. Overlooking this important fac-tor now may force you to replace the car you ultimately buy sooner than you had hoped.
Safety
Safety is the top priority for many parents as they purchase new cars for their families. Look for a car with a high safety rating and a proven track record of ensuring passengers sur-vive accidents. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (www.iihs.org) as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (www.nhtsa.gov) test and rate new vehicles for safety, and parents should look up the results of these tests and ratings on any vehicle they are considering pur-chasing for their families.
Use
Family cars are rarely limited to getting mom or dad to and from work and for trips to the grocery store. Today’s kids are more active than ever before, and chances are their sched-ules are as packed as their parents’. Consider the many chauf-feuring trips you will have to make in the years to come, and choose a car that is equipped to handle those trips. Parents who double as soccer coaches may benefit from buying min-ivans that can easily store all that sports equipment, while those whose children participate in activities that take them far and wide may want a car that’s especially fuel efficient.
Comfort
Luxury vehicles may provide the most comfortable ride, but parents who are not yet ready to go that route need not sac-rifice comfort in favor of practicality. Families spend lots of time in their vehicles, and summer vacations or winter holi-day road trips are that much more enjoyable when everyone is riding in comfort. While comfort might not be the foremost priority for parents, it is something to consider when buying
new family vehicles.

AGING AND DRIVING Getting behind the wheel and enjoying the freedom to travel is a luxury few are anxious to abandon. But there comes a time in nearly every person’s life when he or she must take inven-tory of his or her driving and assess if that next joy ride is a safe and smart decision.
Driving may help older adults remain independent and mobile, but the chance for a motor vehicle accident increases as one ages. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says fatal crash rates per mile traveled increase starting at age 75 and increase notably after age 80. This is largely due to increased susceptibility to injury and medical complications among older drivers rather than an increased tendency to get into crashes. Road accidents tend to increase around a person’s 65th birthday.
Authorities in Canada require physicians to warn patients if the doctors have any concerns about their patients’ ability to drive. Doctors also must report these concerns. There are no such requirements in the United States, where individual drivers and families must use their own judgement to decide if it is still safe for a particular person to be on the road.
Minor fender benders, traffic citations, trouble remembering directions or frequently visited stores, may be early indications that a driver is no longer at his or her best behind the wheel.
Some experts say that families should institute driving directives, much in the way a person would spell out medical desires or end-of-life plans. This way, when the time comes to assess driving ability, the conversation already has been started.
There is no set age when a person’s keys should be taken away, as aging does not guarantee drivers’ abilities will decline. In fact, there are many things people can do to prolong their time on the road.
• Get routine vision and hearing checks. These examinations will help to determine your fit-ness to be on the road and shed light on any issues that need to be addressed. Those who wear contact lenses or glasses may need to update their prescriptions.
• Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can affect the body in many ways, including reducing reac-tion time. Falling asleep while driving can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists.
• Know your medications. Certain medications can make you drowsy, so read the labels so you know not to drive while taking them. Speak with your doctor to see if there are any substi-tutes that won’t affect your performance behind the wheel.
• Recognize your limitations. You may not like driving at night or in inclement weather. Stick to driving when you feel most comfortable.
• Enroll in a refresher course. Sign up for a defensive driving course to review your driving skills. Not only may it make you safer on the road, but it also may help reduce your insurance rates.
Getting older doesn’t mean you have to quit driving right away. Recognize the signs of a de-cline in driving ability and figure out how long it is safe to remain behind the wheel.

Hi, Bootsie here. I’m really shy at the moment. It’s just because there’s a lot of noise from those dogs and I’m trying to adjust to my surroundings. I’m quite a
stunning looking kitty with white whiskers. If you just give me a little time, you won’t be sorry. I have a lot of love to give once I can relax in my new home. Could
you be my new someone special?
Beautiful Abigail is a full-sized girl with a tiny meow who lost her home when her prior owner had to move into assisted living. She’s a very sweet girl who is a bit
shy at the moment (camera shy, too) because of all the recent changes she’s seen. She is eager to be in a loving home where she can relax and be herself again. We
hear she loves children and readily greets strangers. Abigail was a Christmas pres-ent not so long ago, but she is guaranteed to bring you joy any time of the year.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. P. P.

DID YOU KNOW?Insuring multiple vehicles and/or drivers on an auto insurance policy may prove cheaper than having each of those drivers and vehicles in-sured separately on multiple policies. That’s because insur-ers typically offer bulk rates to policy holders willing to insure several vehicles and/
or drivers on a single policy. But such discounts typically adhere to guidelines that dic-tate eligibility. For example, if the head of a family wants to insure his or her children on the same auto insurance pol-icy he or she has, then those children typically must list their parents’ home as their legal residence. Blood rela-tions also may influence eligi-
bility for multiple driver poli-cy discounts. In general, only blood relatives or relatives by marriage can benefit from multiple driver discounts. However, non-related motor-ists who jointly own a vehicle may be eligible for discounts.
