CALAMITY – great disaster or misfortune
Any disaster – earthquake, flood, fire, hurricane, tornado – is an example of a calamity.
There are other kinds of misfortune that can also be called a calamity – can you think of any?
COMPREHENSIVE - complete
These kits are very comprehensive. Why?
What else is comprehensive in your life?
CONVENTIONAL – common; ordinary (not negative)
Flowers and candy are conventional gifts to give someone.
What kind of gift would be unconventional?
Think about vacations you have taken. Were they conventional or unconventional?

FLAGRANT – obvious, glaring, scandalous (negative)

FLUCTUATE – change back and forth, sometimes unpredictably
What is fluctuating in these pictures? What else can fluctuate?
PERSEVERE – keep going, not give up even when it’s difficult
All of these people have persevered – The man perseveres climbing the mountain. The students have persevered to graduate.

PONDER – think deeply
REHABILITATE – get treatment to return to normal life
If you have any sort of injury, you have to rehabilitate before you can return to your regular activities.
You also might be familiar with rehab. What happened with Britney Spears?
TURMOIL – chaos; commotion and confusion
There is turmoil in all of these pictures. What is the cause?
VENTURE – to take a risk
These people have ventured to go skydiving or mountain climbing.
