English IV AP Honors

Students are required to register for and take the AP test as a part of this class. This is a college-preparatory class in which students will sharpen their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Study comprises British literature and emphasizes worthy prose and poetry from European and American authors. The entire course focuses on the close reading of literary works, such as Hamlet, Macbeth, Heart of Darkness, Frankenstein, and the Alchemist followed by discussion and composition based on analysis and evaluation of the texts. The class prepares students for taking the AP Literature Exam (administered by the College Board) which may allow students to earn three to six credits in College English.

In an effort to maximize the AP English educational experience, AP English will be partnered with Honors Government and Economics to create a year-long, 45 minute per day, modified block class schedule. To properly prepare for the AP English test and attempt to break the material into more manageable sections, we piloted this program in the 2011-2012 school year and students found it to be preferable to the regular block schedule. Students will not lose any additional periods, but rather will split the period between AP English and Economics/Government.

Chemistry I

Chemistry I is a laboratory science course in which students investigate the composition of matter and the physical and chemical changes it undergoes. Students use science process skills to study the fundamental structure of atoms, the way atoms combine to form compounds, and the interactions between matter and energy. Students explore chemistry concepts through an inquiry-based approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Mathematics, and Technology & Engineering are taught in context of the content standards for Atomic Structure, Matter and Energy, and Interactions of Matter.

American Government/Economics

Half of this course is a study of the choices people make while living in a world of scarcity. This half is divided into three different subcategories: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Consumerism. Students will compare economic systems that prepare themselves to be an active and responsible consumer in our free enterprise economic systems. As a result of this survey portion of the class, students will gain an understanding of fundamental economic concepts and their application to a variety of economic systems, gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to function effectively in a technologically expanding global economy, and finally, an understanding of the roles individuals, businesses, and government agencies play in a larger economy. The other half of this course introduces students to the study of Constitutional Government in the U.S. It will provide students with an understanding of how the Constitution came into existence, why it took the form it did, and how it has functioned for the past 200 years. With this knowledge, students will be encouraged and equipped to be active participants as citizens in our democratic society.

This class is for Seniors who have a greater than average interest in American Government. Through participation, it will introduce students to the study of constitutional government in the United States: how the Constitution came into existence, why it took the form it did, and how it has functioned for the past two hundred years.

European History AP/DE/H

This course is designed to satisfy the need that exists for the accelerated students to have opportunity to earn college credit before graduation from high school. Since credit is awarded at both the high school and college level, the curriculum must reflect the standards of the Tennessee Board of Education, the college granting the credit, and the College Board. To this end, the study begins with the Renaissance (15th Century) and culminates with the end of the Cold War (20th Century). The course will stress college-level research skills, essay writing, and historical analysis.
