NATIONAL RECOGNITION

• On Wednesday, April 7, Justin Malou was named one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, the award committee announced. The award honors NCAA Division I seniors who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition. Malou is Clemson’s first finalist for the award, which has been presented annually since 2007.

• On Sept. 22, 2020, Clemson’s men’s and women’s soccer teams moved into its new Soccer Operations Complex. The new facility cost nearly $8 million and became the nation’s finest soccer-only facility in the nation.

• The men’s soccer team welcomed Ousmane Sylla and Hamady Diop to the program this January after the two freshman stayed home in Senegal during the fall. The two players traveled after COVID ended their 2020 spring season with SIMA at Montverde Academy.

• George Marks currently serves as Clemson’s SAAC President and is joined by Enrique Montana III and John Martin as members of the organization. Marks has been instrumental in helping to guide Clemson’s student-athletes through the recent discussions surrounding social injustice and has been instrumental in helping student-athletes have their voice heard on social media and on the field of play.

NOTES• The two freshman, both from Dakar, Senegal, played

their prep careers at Montverde Academy with SIMA and head coach Mike Potempa.

• Sylla and Diop were a part of the Tigers’ 2020 recruiting class and were slated to join the team this past fall.

• After COVID forced a mass shutdown of sports, the two returned home to Senegal and were unable to return to the U.S. until January due to travel restrictions.

SAME TALENT, NEW TEAM.• Clemson welcomed two transfers, Callum Johnson and

Max Fisher, to the team in 2020.• Johnson joined the team after playing with Boston

College for three years. Johnson did not play in 2019 due to a hip injury which required surgery.

• Fisher comes to Clemson after three seasons and four years at Furman. Fisher will add to Clemson’s deep stable of goalkeeping talent in 2020. Fisher joined the team during the 2020 spring season.

GATORADE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR• Two freshmen, Ben Erkens and Brandon Parrish, earned

the 2019-20 Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year awards for their respective home state.

• South Carolina -- Erkens scored 12 goals during the 2020 season and brought his prep career total to 47 goals and 61 assists. Erkens is a graduate of Wade Hampton HS.

• Tennessee -- Parrish has scored 68 goals and contribut-ed 40 assists during his prep career. Parrish is a graduate from Fairview HS.

• Parrish is the second Tiger from Tennessee to win the award in recent years, joining Johnny Heckman who won the award during 2014-15 season.

• This is the second-consecutive year in which the two have won the award for their home states.

PRO TIGERS

2021 MLS SuperDraft• Clemson had three players taken in the first round of

the 2021 MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 22. This marked the first time in program history three players went in the opening round and two within the top-five.

• Philip Mayaka was selected at No. 3 by the Colorado Rapids.

• Kimarni Smith was taken at No. 4 by D.C. United.• Justin Malou was selected at No. 27 by Columbus

Crew SC.• Mayaka signed a Generation adidas on Jan. 14, 2021,

meaning he would immediately join his club following the draft.

• Kimarni Smith and Justin Malou each initially returned to Clemson following the draft. Malou intends to remain with Clemson for the entirety of the spring season.

• Kimarni Smith signed with D.C. United on Monday, March 8. Smith is on contract through the 2021 season, with an option for 2022, 2023, 2024 season.

Homegrown Player• On Jan. 21, Grayson Barber signed a Homegrown Player

contract with Sporting KC. This signified the immediate end of Barber’s Clemson career.

• Barber played with the Sporting KC academy from the summer of 2015 through the end of 2017.

• During his time in the academy, Barber was named a member of the U.S. Under-17 Residency roster for the 2017 Spring Semester.

TIGERS IN THE MLS• Robbie Robinson became Clemson’s first men’s soccer

player to be selected No. 1 overall in the MLS SuperDraft

during the 2020 edition of the event.• Three Clemson players were drafted in the opening two

rounds of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.• Clemson has had 28 players selected in the MLS Su-

perDraft since 2000.• Noonan has coached 17 MLS SuperDraft selections in

his eleven years at Clemson.• Miles Joseph, an alumni of the Clemson men’s soccer

program, is an assistant coach with the Portland Timbers and was a part of the staff which helped the club win the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament.
