TRIBUTEsThe Passing of a Loving Teacher

Harriet Lohmann passed away on May 2 from a heart attack following a March 27 mini stroke. Her death was a shock to everyone at the CCDC and we all join her family in grieving her loss. Harriett was the lead teacher in the infant room and was devoted to the children she cared for. She was loved by the children, parents and fellow staff members and will be greatly missed by us all.

We are touched that her family has invited friends to send memorials to the CCDC. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Harriet’s daughter, Sarah Lohmann, has written a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to her mother. We are including it here:

“Not a day of work went by without Harriet looking past her basic duties towards one with deeper meaning and richer ties—being there for one another. The world needs the skills and talents of fathers and mothers, and fathers and mothers in turn need those in the world with the skills for caring for children. Harriet’s way of caring for children went beyond diaper changing and feeding. The quality of and beauty in life that she sought for herself and her family, she also sought for the children and their families. The handmade hair bow she kept from a Christmas tea party she attended with her oldest daughter, Sarah, spoke to the joy she found in fellowship. She desired to connect with parents over more than amounts of food eaten and time slept. She enjoyed learning about where the parents were from and what they did for work. The colorful beaded necklace she received as a gift from her son, Evan, upon his return from Kenya spoke to the value she placed in the way she presented herself to the world. She cared that the children had clean faces, the appropriate amount of clothing on cold days, and a change of clothes for when messes happened. The sport waist pack she got at the expo the day before waiting on her youngest daughter, Anna, to finish the Boston Marathon spoke to her regard for health. She walked to work and the grocery store, and ate nutritious and filling foods. She really enjoyed it when she was able to take the children out into the fresh air and sunshine, and took an interest in the kinds of foods they ate.

More can be said about Harriet, but she would want it saved for another time. She would want to know that you and your little ones had a good day and what made it that way. She would want to thank those of you who opened their homes to her and simply shared pieces of who they are. She would want to encourage you to keep giving your families your best efforts because they are worth it.”

A Tribute to Dianne HaseltonAs this newsletter was going to press,

we learned the sad news that Dianne Haselton had passed away. There are simply not enough words to express our deep appreciation for all her service to, and support of, the Center. Dianne served as a faithful CCDC volunteer in a variety capacities for countless years.

Many will know her as the originator and long-time editor of this news-letter. She faithfully produced four editions annually providing much of the writing, along with all the editing and design expertise. The newsletter is not only a way to share the wonderful

things going on at the Center, but is also a gentle reminder to our readers that contributions are much needed and always welcomed.

Publishing our newsletter is only one of the many ways that Di-anne supported the CCDC. She served on the board of directors for a number of years and as president for two three-year terms. She provided the leadership for the Herculean task of the transition from the original location near Old Stone Church to the present site in the remodeled historical Calhoun school that was reconfigured to meet the needs of a pre-school program.

No challenge was ever too big or too small for Dianne. She was actively involved with our football parking fundraiser for many years, often seen at the curb waving pompoms and hailing cars into our lot. When the huge, high windows in the classrooms needed to be darkened for naptime, Dianne bought fabric, whipped out her sewing machine, and made Roman shades for all the windows. She also fash-ioned elf costumes for our one-year-olds at Christmas.

In the 48-year history of the CCDC, perhaps no one has done more for the Center than Dianne Haselton. Her persistence and devo-tion kept the mission alive and growing. Dianne knew how to write fundable grants and encouraged the community to give to the CCDC as individuals, churches, and civic groups. She was instrumental in raising the much-needed funds to replace all the cribs when the state passed new regulations. She also tapped the energy and creative ideas of Clemson students, many of whom found their involvement to be an enriching experience that also fulfilled campus service learning requirements. And the list goes on…

Dianne’s dedication to the CCDC and it’s mission has been unpar-alleled and we are all the better for it. We will miss her. In the words of former board president, Judy Benson, “Her dedication and hard work lifted the opportunities for hundreds of young families in our community. She will be greatly missed, but gratefully remembered.”

We are extremely grateful that CCDC is one of three designated non-profit organizations where memorial donations may be sent in Dianne’s honor.

Everyone at the CCDC extends sympathy to Dianne’s family. We hope they know how much we have appreciated all Dianne has done over the years on behalf of the CCDC. Our thoughts and prayers go with you all.

Congratulations 4K Graduates! From the “Bug Hunter Award” to the “Future Comedian,” and

the “Lawyer Award” (everyone’s right!) to the “Amazing Artist,” the graduates and their parents alike beamed from ear to ear as

4K teacher, Ms. Dorian Young, presented the Personality Awards.CCDC’s 4K Graduation was the usual gala affair with director, Sharon Hwu,

and board president, Carol Wiley, welcoming parents and guests, and the capped and gowned graduates being presented as they processed one-by-one into the auditorium and onto the stage. Sharon recognized former teachers Ms. Robbie and Ms. Sabrina, the 4K assistants Ms. Abigail and Ms. Andrea, and all the others who have worked with these children. She also thanked volunteer librarians, Gervais Emanuel and Barbara Allen, for their many hours of faithful service. Carol Wiley spoke about the very supportive and active board reiterating that it is always “all about the children.”

Parent Jennifer Mauldin, who has also volunteered faithfully doing creative

movement activities with the children, spoke on behalf of the parents praising the director, the teachers, and the CCDC’s supportive environment and dedication.

The program closed with Ms. Dorian directing the children in absolutely the cutest presentation ever of “The Three Little Pigs”! Then everyone enjoyed a wonderful array of refreshments furnished by the parents. The event concluded with gift bags for all the graduates and the traditional “releasing of the butterflies.” Once more we are proud to send an amazing group of very well-prepared 4K children off to the public schools! Good luck, graduates!

4K Class Trip to the Children’s MuseumOur children and their families ended the year with

an unforgettable trip to the Children’s Museum of the Upstate in Greenville on May 17th. From the pint-sized grocery store to the construction site, from the climbing wall to the space shuttle the children eagerly explored the three levels of interactive play. They loved the giant water table and making their own music videos. Teacher Ms. Dorian Young noted, “We even did a “dino dig” and learned about fossils and the tools used by paleontologists. What a special day of learning and fun!”

Dinner Theater a Fun(d)-Raising Success! The actors mingled among

the guests making our March 4 event a casual and enjoyable affair. The delicious dinner, wine and a collection of dramatic vignettes in the delightful setting of Occasions at Wedgefield combined to provide a relaxing, entertaining evening.

A team from the international repertory company, The Covenant Players, had the audience chuckling as they enjoyed the fine food prepared by Andrew Merritt. The venue was decorated smartly in black and white linens with candles and playbills adorning the tables.

We are especially grateful to all the individuals and businesses who sponsored this event. As we are fond of reminding people, every single dollar donated or received in ticket sales goes directly toward scholarships to provide quality childcare for preschoolers who would otherwise not have access to it. We do not take any of your donations for granted and we are thrilled with every single dollar! Please join us in thanking these generous sponsors!

With the exception of the infants, all the children dyed hard-boiled eggs on April 12th in preparation for the Easter egg hunt the next day. Parents not only provided plastic eggs but helped hide eggs all around the playground and the Arts Center’s garden. All the children had a GREAT time!

the captivating performance of “Brown Bear, Brown Bear & Other Treasured Stories” at the Brooks Center. Community donations cover the ticket costs every year so the children can attend these live, educational Tri-ART performances. Our 4K children were treated to five other shows this school year—events they will long remember!

Along with thanking all those who contributed to the Tri-ART series, we express our appreciation to the CAT

bus for their help in transporting this large group of children to and from the Brooks Center. Thanks to everyone who had a part in creating priceless memories for our children!

“Conscious Parenting” WorkshopAll parents were invited to attend a workshop on

“Conscious Parenting” lead by board member Patti Hunnicutt. The lively discussion gave parents the opportunity to share some of their child rearing issues and questions in a supportive environment that encouraged the exchange of ideas. Many great suggestions were tossed around! Nobody ever said parenting would be easy – but it helps to share since you are “all in it together”!

Childcare was provided so parents could participate without distractions. Each participating family received a door prize at the end of the evening.

Parent Testimonial

Parenthood is full of challenges, as is Clemson’s engineering program. Our family moved to Clemson so I could pursue a bachelor’s degree, and show my son that it’s never too late to do something worth doing. I’m proud of the degree I will take with me when I leave, and am grateful for all the help I’ve received along the way.

A large part of this help has come in the form of the services provided by the Clemson Child Development Center. Without adequate childcare, our family would have struggled. The scholarship program that alleviated our financial concerns has been a critical part of my academic success, as well as our family’s well-being. With the scholarship program, we have been able to focus more on the two things that brought us here: education and family. The caring staff and parenting workshops at CCDC prove the old adage, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This is also true of all the people we have not met who helped make our Clemson experience so wonderful.

Community InvolvementWe Love Those Volunteers!

Board member, Kathy Fulmer, and her husband, John, came with the University Lutheran Church Cam-pus Ministry group to help with projects here on Sat-urday, April 1st. They added mulch to the playgrounds and cleaned out our vegetable garden so that it will be ready for the children to do their spring planting.

We’ve also had excellent volunteer help from CU Mor-tar Board, the Daniel High School Interact Club, and the Beta Club. Thumbs up for their community service!

Calhoun-Clemson Rotary Donates Funds and Defibrillator

The Calhoun-Clemson Rotary Club pre-sented CCDC with a $500 donation at its May 12 breakfast meeting. They have been faithful annual supporters of the CCDC for many years.

The Calhoun-Clemson Rotary Club has also donated a newly installed defibrillator, a welcome addition to the Calhoun Bridge fa-cility. The device will enable staff and visitors to receive help in the event of a cardiac arrest emergency and has been placed in the hall near the shared conference room.

Attending the March 22 presentation along with Rotary members were Mayor Jimmy Cook; city fire marshal Bill Box; assistant city administrator Andy Blondeau; Messenger re-porter Greg Oliver; and representatives from the African American Museum, The Clem-son Arts Center, and the CCDC.

Staff members from the three non-profits will be trained to use this life-saving device.

Introducing to New CCDC Board Members

We are delighted to welcome Kathy Fulmer and Renee Trent Sardinas to the CCDC Board of Directors.

Kathy and her husband John retired to Clemson in December of 2015. Both their children, Eliza-beth (’01) and Tripp (’01), graduated from Clem-son, as did John (’70) and his father (’33). They are now living their dream in Clemson!

Kathy has 20 years of experience teaching in the early childhood setting, grades 1 through 4, the majority of those years in second and third grade. While living in Greensboro, NC, she was trained as a Literacy Facilitator and assigned to two ele-mentary schools. Although she was able to retire early with the relocation to Clemson, Kathy is missing the interaction and excitement of working with young children. Kathy and John are active

members of University Lutheran Church.Renee is a long-time educator, as are several members of her fam-

ily. Many of us remember her dad, Butch Trent, from the University YMCA/Union and Clemson City Council.

Renee grew up here and attended the Clemson schools. She earned a BS in Early Childhood Education from Carson-Newman College and an M.Ed from Clemson in both Elementary Education and then in Elementary Guidance and Counseling. She recently retired after 34 years of teaching 4th grade at McKissick Elementary in Easley.

Renee loves to read, swim, travel and craft. She is married to retired chef Louie Sardinas, and they have a daughter, Caroline.

Thank You to Two Generous DonorsThe Clemson Child Development Center is once again

immensely grateful to the W.C. English Foundation for their recent donation of $25,000 in support of our scholarship pro-gram. This foundation has been supporting the scholarship program for many years, providing high quality preschool edu-cation and daycare to children for whom this might otherwise not be available.

We are also thrilled to have recently received a check for $1700 from All 4 Da Kids sent by member Sandra Brown. All 4 Da Kids is sponsored by White Oak Spring Missionary Baptist Church in Central. Its Mission Statement reads: “It takes a community to raise our children. Our goal is to do all we can to help families meet the needs of all children in our surrounding areas.” All 4 Da Kids hosts an Annual Christmas drive and attributes its success to the outpouring of generous individuals in Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties, whose support “validates the true spirit of Love.”
