OVERVIEW This document announces the General Availability for the 21.3.2 release of the Clearspan® Communicator™ Mobile for iPhone.

Clearspan Communcator Mobile for iOS smartphones is an application installed on smartphones running the iPhone operating system. Available from the Apple iTunes Store, the Communicator provides users with a mobile App on their iOS based smartphone which provides Clearspan call control and may provide users with the ability to place Audio and Video calls from their iOS smartphones. The following product distinctions will be available for the Clearspan Communicator Mobile for iPhone:

Clearspan Communicator Mobile – Voice: A mobile app providing audio calling capabilities.

Clearspan Communicator Mobile – Video: A mobile app providing audio and video calling capabilities.

Clearspan Communicator Mobile – Lite: A mobile app with no audio or video softphone capabilities.

The following matrix outlines the features and differences of the two versions:

In addition to the configuration and call control features listed in the table above, Clearspan Communicator Mobile for iOS smartphones introduces some new capabilities, including the “Call Pull” feature. The Call Pull function enables the user to retrieve an active call on any of their shared telephony endpoints or devices through their Clearspan Communicator Mobile client. A long press on the client’s dialer * key is equivalent to dialing the *11 (default) feature access code typically used to activate this function.

Additionally, users can select/set the device behavior when originating calls. The Dialing Service screen allows users to set the choices enabled for outbound calls, with the choices provided being:

Mobile smartphone (originate using cellular service)

VOIP Call (originate using Wi-Fi)

Call Back (originate using Clearspan Anywhere or Clearspan Remote Office services)

Always Ask (It is recommend that this be set ensuring that users will have to select the mechanism to initiate the call based on the services currently enabled for the user)

Note: For Clearspan Communicator Lite:

Clearspan Anywhere should be configured with the “native mobile number”. If Remote Office is also configured and enabled, the assigned number will have precedence over “Clearspan Anywhere”. In either case, the destination will receive the caller ID of the Clearspan Communicator user.

On the client “Call Settings” menu, “Dialing Service” should be set appropriately. If calls are originated via Dialing Service “iPhone”, the native number will be advertised to the destination.

Once a call is connected, it is a cellular iPhone call and adding additional participants will advertise the caller ID of the native iPhone to the added destinations.

KNOWN ISSUES This section describes known limitations and issues affecting the service related to the client software. Whenever possible, suggested workarounds are provided.

INSTALLATION AND START-UP

It is strongly recommended to uninstall previous development versions of the client before installing the client from the Apple App store.

The notification sounds for Communicator 2015 should be enabled from the iPhone’s Notification Center.

On older devices, users may experience slower performance with a large contact.

Clearspan Communicator iOS does not use OpenSSL so it is not affected by the announced vulnerabilities: http://www.openssl.org/news/secadv_20140605.txt.

UPGRADE INFORMATION

Communicator Release 21.3.2 is compatible with configuration files from older client releases. However, to benefit from the new features introduced in Release 21.3.2, additional configuration parameters are required.

For more information on the configuration additions, see the Communicator (Android and iOS Mobile, Android and iOS Tablet) Configuration Guide

CONFIGURATION

A Clearspan Communicator restart is required for applying certain new configuration settings.

CONTACTS

There are no known limitations or issues that affect this service.

CONNECTIVITY

While in the background, the client is able to renew its SIP registration only once every ten minutes. If the SIP service has to be renewed more frequently, then the client is not able to receive calls after the registration expires.

Due to iOS limitations, the application is terminated if the app wakes up more than fifteen times in 300 seconds while in the background. This may be caused when the app wakes when receiving chat messages.

Communicator could stop working while in background. The reason is that iOS could stop any background application in case another application needs more resources. Later, iOS restarts Communicator but it is not able to restore normal operation until it is brought to foreground. Because of the security level of the application, it is not able to retrieve the credentials from the security keychain while in background and restore normal operation silently. A possible workaround is to minimize usage of other applications while Communicator is running in background.

PRESENCE

There are no known limitations or issues that affect this service.

CHAT

Personal details are not exchanged properly with federated Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) users (server-side).

Unsubscribed users can see each other’s avatars without having subscription (group chat only).

MULTIPLE DEVICES

There are no known limitations or issues that affect this service.

CALL LOGS/HISTORY

If a search in the local address book option is enabled from the Settings and the call logs contain more than 5,000 contacts to be resolved, there may be a slight delay despite the multiple optimizations in the processing.

Ability to remove individual Call log entries on iOS is not available on iOS.

The call times in the Call History list may not be converted properly if the time format in iOS (12 or 24-hour format) is not supported by the chosen iOS “Region Format”. If this is the case, change the time format to a format supported by the currently selected “Region Format” to avoid missing timestamps in the Call History list.

The exact time of an entry in the Call Log is not shown for entries that are not from today. Only the date is present.

SERVICE MANAGEMENT

There are no known limitations or issues that affect this service.

SEARCH

Search in the Exchange global address contact list may not return results on certain iOS 7 releases.

AUDIO CALLS

The following are known limitations for audio calls:

If there is an incoming Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) call from a number that is not available in the local address book, the caller ID is shown as Unknown or Unavailable. There is no workaround.

Could not retrieve a call using Clearspan Anywhere (iOS limitation).

Issues with Do Not Disturb (DND) ring splash can be experienced.

Clearspan Communicator may experience abnormal behavior when an audio call is put on hold from the Call Manager web console.

In very rare cases, an iPhone call starts two ring cycles and one continues after call is answered.

Upon an incoming Clearspan Communicator VoIP call, users should use the incoming notification slider to unlock the device. If the standard slider is used and Clearspan Communicator is not the active application, ringing stops until the Clearspan Communicator application is manually activated. This is due to an iOS 7+ difference in unlocking the device behavior.

Adaptive Multi-Rate Narrowband (AMR-NB) and Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) and G722.1 audio codecs are not supported.

When dialing an enterprise contact from dialer using the full extension (location+extension), name resolution does not work (server-side).

“Line Busy” tone is not played through the loudspeaker.

VIDEO CALLS

The following are known limitations for video calls:

Video calls against third-party video phones (such as Cisco Tandberg E20 and Grandstream) may fail depending on the configuration.

Clearspan Communicator does not support the H.263 video codec.

CALL RECORDING

There are no known limitations or issues that affect this service.
