Our Mission - To Promote Administrative Excellence byHonoringEncouragingLeadingPromoting

The history of our chapter began July 9, 1986 when Southwest Houston Chapter helped mentor us and complete the forms to charter CLNAC. Our chapter began meeting at the Gilruth Center located at Johnson Space Center and hosted the installation ceremony on October 22, 1986 at the Holiday Inn on NASA Road One. Jessie Gilmore was our first President. Charter members include Bernice Woolsey, CPS who is our current Treasurer today. She has served our chapter for twenty-five years!

We began our journey in the Professional Secretaries International (PSI) which later change the name to International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). In 1991, our first banner flew onboard Space Shuttle Atlantis; we would hold the distinct honor of being the first chapter in space.

In 1996 our chapter gavel was flown aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis to the Russian MIR Space Station and returned to earth six months later and presented to President Bonnie House, CPS.

In 2006 our chapter banner lifted off again and traveled to the International Space Station in celebration of our 20 th anniversary. In July 2007 our banner was presented to IAAP Headquarters at the International Convention in Tampa, Florida.

This year’s celebration will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Webster, Texas. We will present the Award of Excellence to one of our members executives in our first executive recognition program which we hope to hold annually. Our guest speaker Kate Skol, owner of CompuTrain and Microsoft Office Master, will present a one hour training course on Microsoft Word 2010.

Come celebrate our amazing history!

Effective at our August 15, 2011 Chapter Meeting, theClear Lake NASA Area Chapter implemented a newprogram, the Chapter Meeting Pass. The purpose of theprogram is to distribute Avery Dennison training funds to itsentire membership. Each month two Chapter MeetingPasses will be given away as door prizes. August Meeting Winners:Angela Carrizales (left) Workforce Solutions Recruiter andour Speaker for the month. Thama McGregor (right) SelahFinancial Services and a first time attendee at our meeting. History:In early January the CLNAC submitted the Avery Great Results Chapter Achievement Awards Application. Kellen Clark, CPS/CAP chaired the committee along with input from the entire board. Well, we won the Avery Great Results Chapter and Division Achievement Awards Chapter with 40+members Honorable Mention Award. If you attended our APW event in April then you witnessed Avery making the formal announcement to the chapter and presented us with a mock check. I am happy to report that last month while attending the 2011 Educational Forum & Annual Meeting in Montreal and at the Avery Chapter and Division Achievement Awards Presentation I had the honor of picking up our $500 award check. So what do we plan to do with this money? Since this award is to be utilized for educational training of our chapter members; and we all know we couldn’t possibly hold a seminar for our entire chapter with $500, the CLNAC BOD decided to distribute the funds throughout the coming year. So for the next year at each of our meetings we will give away two Chapter Passes. What this means is that every member or guest at our meetings will have the ability to win a chapter pass for the next month. The Chapter Pass entitles the recipient to a meal and training program at no charge.

In order to effectively manage this program we have a few guidelines:•RSVP as usual and by the normal deadline (Thursday prior to Meeting). Select “pay at the door” option and in the comment section type in “Chapter Pass Awardee”.•Before you leave the meeting, complete the information card and return to Ymelda.•To effectively manage this program, this certificate will expire in one month.•You may give the pass to someone, however to maximize the intent of the program it should be a member or a potential member. If your intent is to attend next month, then invite a friend. This is a win-win program for everyone and we want to see this reach its fullest potential by encouraging attendance and new memberships. If you need further clarification, please contact Ymelda Calvillo at [email protected] .

An Evening of Wit and Wisdom

September 1, 2011

CLNAC President, Lorna DeArmond, CPS, President-Elect, Rachael Venable, CAP and Certification Chair, Kellen Clark, CPS/CAP were invited to attend a private benefit at The Houston Club honoring World War II Veteran Sergeant Harold Utsler hosted by Sir Winston Churchill's great-grandson, Jonathan Churchill-Sandys. During the second World War, Sergeant Harold Utsler ran 50 death defying missions over Europe as a top turret gunner and flight engineer on a B-24 bomber crew. "When the war broke out, I wanted to enlist, my country needed me" said Utsler in the interview with Jonathan Churchill-Sandys.

Jonathan is the great-grandson of Britain's wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and an internationally recognized speaker and freelance journalist. Jonathan and his wife Sara manage the International Churchill Foundation, an educationally based organization dedicated to the promotion of Sir Winston Churchill's morals, life lessons and leadership skills in combination with the preservation of history.

Rachael accompanied by her father, Jim Martin, a retired aerospace engineer and passionate Churchill admirer, Kellen and I met in downtown Houston and walked two blocks to The Houston Club located on Rusk Street. The Houston Club has been a gathering place for the city's business, financial, cultural and civic leaders since 1894 and is Houston's first and finest private club.

The evening began with champagne toasts to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Democracy and Freedom, and those who gave their service to wars on our behalf. Then a minute of silence was observed in memory of those who have fallen in service to their country, followed by the American National Anthem beautifully sung by, Jonathans wife, Sara Churchill-Sandys.

The program began with Jonathan interviewing Sergeant Harold Utlser who is 90 years old and has outlived most everyone in his family. He became homeless after a family dispute over who would take care of him and they drove him to Hobby Airport and left him there. Compassionate citizens from US Vets, a non-profit organization dedicated to reaching out to veterans rescued him and helped get into permanent affordable housing. A frail and small man, Sergeant Utlser described memorable events of WWII and how US intelligence was unable to warn them against approaching German forces in Poland. He spoke of how important respect was during the 1940's and believes there is a lack of it in today's generation. He blamed it on politicians who he deemed quite unworthy of the great sacrifice his generation made for our freedom.

Jonathan Churchill-Sandys then addressed the audience by saying his great-grandfather Sir Winston Churchill would have adamantly opposed any law that banned smoking in public. Churchill acquired a taste for Cuban cigars in 1895 which he smoked the rest of his life. Sir Winston Churchill's wit and wisdom is internationally known, his word and leadership example continue to be an inspiration to world leaders today. At a time when Britain, Europe and the rest of the free world faced their most dangerous hour, Churchill rose above the scared populous and promised victory from the ashes of defeat. "We shall not flog or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing-grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!"

—House of Commons, 4 June 1940, following the evacuation of British and French armies from Dunkirkas the German tide swept through France.

It would be hard to recount all the stories we heard, but Jonathan Churchill-Sandys did an excellent job of describing leadership qualities combined with stories and famous quotes of his great grandfather. Qualities such as morals and values, respect, loyalty and courage. He described the relationship between Churchill and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who he had known since she was two years old and described the friendship between Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. He talked about how Churchill overcame a speech impediment.

Jonathan went on to say his great-grandfather was a great leader in part due to his great grandmother Clementine and he continued to share famous quotes and funny stories of his grandfather in concert with leadership qualities. The evening ended with a silent auction and Rachael was successful in winning a bronze bust of Sir Winston Churchill. Jonathan posed for pictures with us and we left with a patriotic sense of admiration for one of the world's greatest leaders - Sir Winston Churchill.

You'll get a chance to hear Jonathan Churchill-Sandys, he is scheduled to speak at our Clear Lake NASA Area Chapter meeting in February 2012. He has a talent for mixing wit and wisdom while teaching leadership skills. You won't want to miss this very special moment as Jonathan shares the legacy of Sir Winston Churchill's most famous quotes combined into a lesson on leadership.

Would You Endure a Bad Boss?

It’s often said that the people you work with can make or break a job, but could you tolerate a bad manager? In a survey by OfficeTeam, 46 percent of employees said they’ve worked for an unreasonable boss. Of those individuals, 59 percent said they stayed put and either tried to deal with the issue or suffered through the torment.

What can you do if you have a difficult boss? Following are different types of challenging bosses and how you might handle each one:

The micromanager has trouble delegating tasks. This boss looks over your shoulder to make sure you complete a project exactly as told.

Coping strategy: Trust is usually the issue here, so make sure you build it. Meet all deadlines, pay attention to details and keep your supervisor apprised of all the steps you've taken to ensure quality work.

The poor communicator provides little or no direction. Your assignments often have to be completed at the last minute or redone because goals and deadlines weren't clearly explained.

Coping strategy: At the outset of a project, ask for any information your boss has not yet provided. Diplomatically point out that it’s critical to have these details up front to ensure you meet his or her expectations. Seek clarification when confused and arrange regular check-ins.

The bully wants to do things his or her way, or no way at all. Bosses like this also tend to be gruff with others and easily frustrated.

Coping strategy: Stand up for yourself. The next time your supervisor shoots down your proposal, for example, calmly explain your rationale. Often, this type of manager will relent when presented with a voice of reason.

The saboteur undermines the efforts of others and rarely recognizes individuals for a job well done. This supervisor takes credit for employees' ideas but places blame on others when projects go awry.

Coping strategy: Your job is to make your manager look good, but not at the expense of your own career advancement. Ensure your contributions are visible to others, including those above your boss in the organization, if possible. Keep track of your past projects and all communication with your supervisor, in case you ever need to defend your work ethic to senior management.

The mixed bag is always a surprise. This manager's moods are unpredictable: He or she may confide in you one day and turn a cold shoulder the next.

Coping strategy: Try not to take this kind of disposition personally. Stay calm and composed. When this supervisor is on edge, try to limit communication to urgent matters.

You’re likely to encounter various work styles during your career. By making an effort to understand each other, even people with different work styles can coexist in a productive and peaceful workplace.

AVOIDING PRESENTATION BLOOPERSBy Peggy Morrow

Whether you are making a presentation to one person or many, there are a host of mistakes you can make. In my twenty-eight years in the speaking business, I have seen many mistakes. Here are three of my favorite presentation bloopers. Avoid them in your next presentation. 1.A weak opening. No, you don't have to have a joke as an opening, but it must be something that catches people's attention. It can be a thought-provoking quote, a story or question, statistic or a simple statement of fact. "For every complaining customer you have, there are 26 others who are also dissatisfied but are not complaining," is one I use when speaking about dealing with complaining customers.

2.A joke is fine, too, but you must tell it extremely well and it must be related to the topic of the presentation. It can't be just a funny joke. And remember what George Jessel said about speeches: "If you haven't struck oil in three minutes, stop boring!" In general, you have less than a minute to convince people that you have something interesting to say.

3.Killer fillers. Fillers are what we say when we're thinking of what we will say next. They are called vocal pauses and usually come out sounding like "um," "ahh," "okay," and "well." Vocal pauses will distract your audience from your presentation. I remember seeing a very learned professor on television. His credentials were quite impressive, but he linked every sentence together with "ahh." It was so distracting that I started counting his vocal pauses instead of listening to what he had to say. After I got to 100, I shut the TV off - I couldn't take any more.

4.Negative body language. The way we present ourselves when speaking is critical. After all, over half of our communication is non-verbal. So if you wring your hands, juggle the change in your pockets, keep your arms to the side or use your hands too much, the audience will soon get a negative impression of your whole presentation. Body language can either add to or distract from your presentation.

Use your hands to make natural gestures, just as you do in normal conversation; only make them broader if you are speaking to a larger audience. Small gestures appear tentative and uncertain when you're in front of a group. Keep your arms above your waist and avoid the "figleaf" position where you clasp your hands in front of you. It looks defensive and gives the impression that you lack confidence. And don't point your finger at the audience. Instead, use an open palm held up to the ceiling. So the next time you have to make a presentation, avoid these bloopers.
