Organization Goal/Objective

Our goal is to help potential cyclists overcome barriers and begin commuting by bicycle.

CMAQ = Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality ActCATS = Chicago Area Transportation StudyCDOT Bikes = Chicago Department of Transportation Bike ProgramCBF = Chicagoland Bicycle FederationVOCs = volatile organic compounds known to form pollutionbike modesplit = percent of traelers commuting by given mode

Research Findings

The encouragement, advice and companionship of avid bike commuters can provide potential cyclists with the support they need to shift.

5CleanAir Commuter Challenge Program Implementation Guide | Chicagoland Bicycle Federation

Need to recognize utility of bike for transportation.• Assumption that bike is slower.

• Drivers seldom acknowledge the cost of insurance, maintenance, gasoline, and buying a car in its totality.

• Complacency in current mode of transportation, do not consider biking.

• Available information on cycling comes can appear biased.

Need to feel physically comfortable on the road. • New cyclists are unaware of tips

and tricks to make biking easier (i.e. comfort-able pants, fenders/panniers, appropriate bike, dollar bill in the tire, submersing tube to find a leak).

Primary Research | Understanding barriers to bike commuting

What do Chicago travelers need to try bike commuting?

Need to feel emotionally and socially comfortable as a cyclist.• Potential cyclists can worry about

perceptions of others at the o!ce.

• Lack of know-how and/or existing bike culture can prevent new cyclists from feeling welcome.

Need to connect cyclist to personal values.• Individuals have more interest in

bike commuting when it connects to their personal values.

Need to feel safe on the road.• Percieved danger on the road is the most common reason people

say they don’t commute by bike.

• False perception of danger is corrected through experiencing the roads first-hand.

Existing initiatives in Chicago and worldwide favor physical solutions that serve the community as a whole.

Primary Research | Solving for potential cyclists needs

How do existing initiatives fulfill these needs?

Our opportunity lies in creating a solution that serves the social and emotional needs of the individual.

7CleanAir Commuter Challenge Program Implementation Guide | Chicagoland Bicycle Federation

Need to recognize utility of bike for transportation.

Understanding benefits through the explanation of an enthusiastic cyclist. Next to first-hand experience, the most e"ective transmission of information on the benefits of cycling comes from a trusted friend or coworker.

Mark now delivers co!ee by bike for a living in Madison, WI.

“This guy’s t-shirt said ‘Save $10,000 by sitting on your

ass.’ I asked him about it and he told me to switch to bike

commuting. I thought, ‘Hey, I should really do that.’”Mark, 10.23.07 interview madison_a02, 01.59.00

Need to feel physically comfortable on the road.

Learning tips and tricks from those who’ve used them.Experienced cyclists hold a wealth of information that can be passed down to mentees through example, co-experience or suggestion. Real, tangible information and the ability to ask questions also makes inexperienced feel welcome and builds confidence as a cyclist.

Need to feel safe on the road.

Easing transition to street riding with rider companionship.

Riding in a group or with a trusted friend or co-worker eases a new cyclist into street riding. Experienced cyclists can explain how to navigate the city, how to communicate with drivers and other cyclists, and how to prepare yourself for road and weather conditions.

The social and emotional needs of individual cyclists are best addressed by connecting them to the personalized support of experienced cyclists.

Primary Research | Solving for potential cyclists needs

8CleanAir Commuter Challenge Program Implementation Guide | Chicagoland Bicycle Federation

Dayo counts all the friends he’s gotten to start cycling. He especially enjoys the competitive and athletic aspects of biking.

“I try to get people into it. . . and not from a commuting standpoint

[since everyone lives close to campus]. They always say, ‘Oh, Dayo,

you seem so fit.’ I just say, ‘I bike. Do you bike?’”

Dayo, 10.23.07 interview madison_v01, 09.29.00

Need to feel emotionally and socially comfortable as a cyclist.

Connecting with other cyclists.Creating a welcoming environment for new cyclists is crucial to increasing ridership. By leveraging existing communities or interpersonal relationships, the need to identify with the larger Chicago bike community becomes less important.

Need to connect cycling to personal values.

Learning about biking from someone who understands your values. In order to explain to a potential cyclists what bike commuting may mean to them, or where it adds value in their life, we need to understand their individual situation. No one can do this better than those who are close to the individual or who understand their circumstances in terms of health, image, and/or politics.

Primary Research | Solving for potential cyclists needs

The social and emotional needs of individual cyclists are best addressed by connecting them to the personalized support of experienced cyclists.

How can I turn left at a three way intersection without risking my life?

Unless your bike can fly, avoid taking the Lakeshore path mid day and on weekends. You’re more likely to have an accident with a pedestrian than a car.

Got a hole in my tube the other day (3rd time in a week!) and I couldn’t figure outwhere it was. Any suggestions? I run a pretty tight schedule and lost time meansI’m late for work.

BarbraP, 4:53pm 12/03/07

Good advice fatniu! I agree. Jenny, if you’re getting flats that often, youmay want to do some preventative stu" like:1 - keep tire inflated to max (it’ll repel sharp objects)2 - get wider tires3 - they sell puncture-proof tire liners that go between the tire and tube4 - switch your front and back tires. it’s a pain . . . but the back tire wears faster,so if you alternate them, they’ll last longer. Good luck!

MrIdo, 4:53pm 12/03/07

Try pumping air into the tube until it’s stretched tight. You can usually hear air leaking, but if not, try running your hand around the tube to feel it.If you get a remote location, you can rub saliva over the hole or push it under water (like in an o!ce fountain). You’ll see bubbles.I usually mark it with a pencil immediately so I don’t have to go through the trouble again later. Hope that helps!

CONNECTS TO COMMUNAL GOAL OF SUSTAINABILITY

Value to Cyclists | Team Spirit, Communal Goals

“It would be great to see everyone’s progress so I’ll know who I can razz a little bit.” Todd, Pepper Group

“Within my o!ce, I have a pretty good idea of what guys would be interested in forming a team and participating.”

Jack, Carroll ArchitectsI’d explain our company’s goal of being more sustainable. I’d say ‘this is a way to really walk the walk.’” Todd, Pepper Group

Targeting pre-established groups can increase rider accountability.• Riders have less commitment/obligation in larger numbers or to people they have not met.

Pre-established relationships eliminate trust issues.

FOSTERS TEAM SPIRIT

Team spirit and group goals can be the most e!ective initiators.• Team size grows exponentially as more get involved.

A

24CleanAir Commuter Challenge Program Implementation Guide | Chicagoland Bicycle Federation

“I know I can find a suggested route online, but I would prefer to ask the opinion of someone who lives here and rides every day.” Peter, IIT Institute of Design student

ENGAGES THE EXPERIENCED, SUPPORTS THE INEXPERIENCED

“The biggest pain of the CTA is being on someone else’s schedule. So waiting for cyclists at a stop seems backwards.”Andrew, IIT Institute of Design student

Route mapping is a common passion and a common problem.• Creating maps encourages inexperienced

cyclists to ride without being too aggressive.• Experienced cyclists show excitement

in their knowledge of city streets, directions, and mapmaking.

Value to Cyclists | Engagement, Convenience

A

Cyclists want to GO!• Scheduling regular rides can be inconvenient.• Di!cult for cyclists to ride together.

Varying levels of commitment are needed. • Forums and online information

source is a big first step.• 1 to many relationship provides

flexibility for mentor, mentees while making it easier to find shared connections [than 1 to 1 relationship].

Commute trip reduction programs. To comply with state ordinances, many corporations are implementing Commute Trip Reduction Programs to encourage more e!cient commuter travel. One focus of CTR programs is the encouragement of biking and walking and the improvement of related facilities, i.e. bicycle parking and changing facilities.

Community Transit, a Snohomish County organization focused on assisting companies with commuter congestion, has been running a Bike Commuter Challenge for 8 years. The event has grown from 150 initial participants to 800 in 2007. Participating organizations include Boeing, University of Washington, and Alderwood Mall.

Value to Participating Companies | Success of Similar Initiatives

Nike’s “Traveling Responsibly? Accept the Challenge (TRAC)” program. Nike o"ers monthly prizes and incentives to employees at its World Headquarters and surrounding areas in the Portland, Ore. metropolitan area who can get to work by eliminating the use of a gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle.

Since the program began in 1992, it has reduced the company’s average drive-alone rate from 98% to 84%. In fiscal year 2006 ended May 31, 2006, based on an average round trip of 17.8 miles, Nike employees saved approximately 719,343 vehicle miles traveled by using alternative commute modes. That’s a saving of 35,967 gallons of gas. Nike also saved 40,413 vehicle trips in FY’05.

Chicago Bike Commuter Challenge. Currently a one week challenge during Chicago Bike Week, the existing Bicycle Commuter Challenge successfully gathered 1,600 employees from 130 organizations in 2006 and continues to grow.

Feedback from past participants:“It makes it more fun if you’ve got someone you know who can ride along side with and talk to . . . I totally love what they’re doing. I just wish I had more ammunition to convince people to do it more regularly” - Todd, The Pepper Group

“It’s easy to get a team together knowing what people will be interested. It just grows after that.” - Jack, Carroll Architects

Traveling Responsibly? Accept the Challenge!

Existing initiatives targeting pre-existing communities in a commuter challenge have met great success.

Value to Sponsor | Corporate Sustainability and Influence

Sustainable image to employees, shareholders and customers.Over the past decade, companies have come to recognize the importance of corporate sustainability, they have made commitments to shareholders recognizing this need, and joined councils and boards to support relevant initiatives.

While sustainability rises to the surface in the corporate world, consumer-facing companies have also projected their sustainable practices and viewpoints through media such as websites, tv ads, and event/initiative sponsorships. Consumers have responded, becoming more conscious shoppers and rewarding companies such as Whole Foods, American Apparel, and Patagonia.

Concept triage. Each option considered for the National Commuter Challenge was evaluated using business and user values. Based on overall scores and ease of implementation based on resources and capabilities, some concepts were chosen to be fast-tracked or developed further at CBF. Several options scored highly , but CBF does not currently have the capabilities and resources to pursue these options. These concepts will need to be shopped to potential sponsors.

* Developing a NCC website is a task that could be accomlished by CBF, but would be accelerated if shopped to potential sponsors.

We can’t do this alone. While all concepts and features that we evaluated could feasibly be implemented immediately, there are a number of excellent solutions that are beyond the existing capabilities and resources of CBF and other bike advocacy groups.

CBF is currently in the process of improving the existing Bike Commuter Challenge by developing a Facebook Application to extend the length to an ongoing event with a series of short competitions, and the scope to encompass the nation. Our next step is to integrate this Facebook Application into an independent website that serves all internet users and potential bike commuting teams. To create this website, we are looking for a sponsor to finance, further develop and build this site.

I’m all Kinds of Crafty!Who says accountants can’t be artistic? There are three things that I’m passionate about in this world and not one of them involve an excel spreadsheet. If I could figure out a way to knit while I’m riding around on my bike and hanging out with my man, I’d be in heaven. I’ve been riding my bike everywhere I can for a few years now, so if you’ve got any questions about riding in the city, send them my way. Message!

How can I turn left at a three way intersection without risking my life?

Unless your bike can fly, avoid taking the Lakeshore path mid day and on weekends. You’re more likely to have an accident with a pedestrian than a car.
