CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY EVENT & LITTER/RUBBISH

    SPECIAL ISSUE 2016

Welcome to this special issue of the Croaker Newsletter all about Clean Up Australia Day Events and Litter/Rubbish around Wangaratta. Please note that the 3 big problems alongOne Mile Creek were reported to Council..

WSN-ROW CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY EVENT.

SUNDAY 6TH MARCH 2016 CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY ALONG ONE MILE CREEK (TrafficSchool to Phillipson Street Bridge)There were 22 members of the Wangaratta Community still keen to do their bit on Sunday 6th March 2016 to Clean up the Environment.

Our regular participants the Rowles family, the Vickeryfamily from Wangaratta, Horst and Marlene Fuchsfrom Glenrowan and of course Wayne & Jen Clementswho clean up the area upstream of the Cribbes RoadBridge, Barry and Lorna Hill (who collected 4 and ahalf bags plus an ironing board around the Phillipson

Street Bridge before they left to go on holidays a weekbefore CUA). Sharee McKenzie Hamilton Park and Andy Kimber Wang, they cleaned around the railwaylines & Ovens Billabong. Andy also did a pick updown a section of Tone Road & old Highway. It was

great to have 4 new comers join us, Helen & Dean Sanders who cleanedaround the Greta Rd Bridge & Tone Road Bridge, Sue and John Wheelercleaned around Batchelors Green and as usual they all couldn’t believethe amount of litter/rubbish collected.

A great Barbie was cooked by Les Bear, Di Farmerand served by Susan Witte and everyone received

either a YMCA family swim pass, voucher fromChicken Time, Willies Fish & Chips and lots ofinformation and guides about Native Fish, Birds andFlowers and a North East Water drink (drink tap) ifthey needed one.It was a great morning spent with members of the

community who care about their environment.

I will not tell you what Horst & Andy are holding youcan guess (mostly home made ones are found)

So very disappointing as usual to collect so much litter in and beside one waterway thatruns through the middle of town.

Council did their clean up on Tuesday 1st  March from Cribbes Road toVincent Road and collected 20 bags of litter/rubbish with around 50scouts and volunteers. Combine it with the section the volunteers did

with WSN-ROW event on the 6th MarchWHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF LITTERING INWANGARATTACan you imagine how much more we would have collected out of thecreek if we had had a good lot of rain in the week prior to both eventswhich would have flushed out our stormwater system.

The days collection.3 Trolleys plus one still in the creek near Perry St Bridge (itwas too steadfast in the mud to get out)1 Ironing board, 1 bread delivery tray, hubcap, a couple of

buckets, a basket, tennis, football and soccer ball, loads ofempty beer can, soft drink glass bottles and of course, tons offood take away containers. Not one bag could be recycledbecause everything is too contaminated from being in the

creek and mud for 12 months waiting for the annual clean up day. This Collection brought out two big problems from those who collected rubbish on the day.

    FIRST PROBLEM

Horst and Marlene FuchsHorst said he wanted to make a point that he has been doing Clean up withWSN/ROW for the past 8 years along One Mile Creek and this is the worsthe has seen it with so much rubbish. He collected in the area before Perry St Bridgewhere dwellings in Moore St back onto OneMile Creek.

They collected 6 plastic bags of householdrubbish which had been thrown into the creekfrom over the fence, there is still more down the

bank of the creek plus furniture, mattress and a sleeping bag that hecouldn’t fit in his car  to bring back to BatchelorsGreen.

Could this mean that once a fortnight household rubbish collection is not enough for these people?

SECOND PROBLEM Builders rubbish blowing all over the place into One Mile Creek from the new housing estate upstream of Cribbes Road Bridge.

This amount of litter/rubbish on the rightcame from just around the Phillipson Street Bridge.four and a half bags and an ironing board.

    Collected by the Hills.

Now I will get you really disappointed in what happens when it rains in Wangaratta.

A very nice drop of rain around the middle of March and the stormwater systems that enters into One MileCreek was flushed out nicely. There is now litter running from the large outlet drain at White Street into thecreek and no doubt out of all the other major stormwater outlets along the creek.

There was an area on the downstream side of the White Street Bridgewhere a large amount of litter wasn’t r emoved on Clean Up Australiaevent. It is now spread further down stream into the reeds. I asked a

Government Dept to see if they could remove the litter but they answered“can’t help” so I guess it will be up to an older volunteer to put on herwaders and get in the creek and remove it otherwise it will sit there forever.

And they wonder why I don’t want to do a Clean Up Australia Eventalong One Mile Creek next year. If greater support

comes from Council on managing litter entering our waterways I could changemy mind. Can you believe there are empty cans caught up in the rocks in the nice newSydney Beach Weir already? Not happy Jan !!!

ACTIONS JUST PRIOR TO PUBLICATION OF APRIL CROAKER Council’s Enviro

Dept. has approached builders on the new estate to control their rubbish/litter also theGreen Army have been approached to remove the litter at White Street Bridge.

Thanks Guys 2 out of 3.

I checked on Mon 28th March, nothing has happened at Moore Street large items and rubbish is still there.

    RUBBISH/LITTER AT SYDNEY BEACH.

Walking on the Good Friday down at Sydney Beach. On the grass area in thecar park area were empty bottles and a tin that had been used for cig butts(well at least they used the tin, it only had just a few butts stuck to the bottomof it) as it had been empted out. Most likely nowin the Ovens River.

Now this will impress you, where the woodenchained block (safety barrier) which had fallenover and been laying there for ages, wellsomeone has discarded an apple in the hole thatthe block had come out of.

I am so disappointed at the lack of respect for the new Aboriginal Bullawah Cultural Trail Rock. As you can see the 2rubbish bins are in the wrong place and large rubbish has beendisposed of beside the bins and they also smell. This is on thefirst day of a 4 day holiday.

Either the bins need to be moved or the large significant rockwas put in the wrong place.

NOW EVERYDAY There is a group of people who walk from the swing bridges all the way down toNorthern Beaches and they carry bags to collect rubbish so this area is kept pleasant to walk along. Thereare also people that regularly walk along One & Three Mile Creeks who also pick up rubbish others whowalk other areas around town also walk picking up, so I know I am not the only one. I would like to thankall of those people who care about Wangaratta and their environment.

There was a great letter in the Chronicle’s Letters to Editor  on Wednesday March 23rd by Gill Baker onbehalf of Wangaratta Sustainability Network the headline reads “Clean Up shouldn’t have to benecessary” which is an excellent read, so if you can get your hands on a copy please take the time to readit because Gill is right.

UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR by some members of our community and there is noone telling them they are not suppose to do it

ONE MORE SUBJECT WHICH IS ALSO LITTER. DOG POO.

How hard is it to carry a plastic bag to clean up after your belovedpet? Just walking over the Easter weekend I came across 10 lots of it,all where visitors to this town would have easily seen and smelt it. Thereis a big difference between a responsible pet owner and one who letstheir pet do what they wish where ever they wish.

THANK YOU TO THOSE PET OWNERS WHO DO THE RIGHT THING SO OTHERSCAN ENJOY A PLEASANT WALK IN WANGARATTA. Sorry other dog owners show you no respect.

TO THOSE IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS WHO LET THEIR DOGS POOEVERYWHERE AND WALK THEM OFF THEIR LEASH

We can only live in hope!!!

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN GET FINED!!!!!!!!!

Just don’t have them on their lease walking to our walk/bike pathskeep them on it at all times. It is dangerous for them to be able torun off when ever they wish, jump up and all over other membersof the community who are enjoying the walk/bike paths and chasenative animals and birds who also enjoy and live in the localenvironment.

    TO ALL THOSE LAWN KEEPERS.

You always see people who care how their lawns and gardens look and take such pride in the great jobthat they accomplish and I congratulate them..

BUT to all those who blow the grass clippings and leaves into the street gutters. Some Lawn mowingbusinesses are also guilty of this bad habit
