BrightView Tree Company to Host Area Chapters at Two Educational Events• August 24, Specimen Tree Preservation and

Relocation Yard, Sunland – Tree Preservation, Relocation and Installation

• September 7, BrightView Tree Company Nursery, Fillmore – Nursery Tour and Talk

Area CLCA chapters will be treated to a two-part Educational Event hosted by our friends at BrightView Tree Company.

What’s unique about this event is that it will be held in two parts on two different days.

On Thursday, August 24 members will learn about specimen tree preservation, relocation, installation and care at BrightView’s Specimen Lot and Growing Grounds across from Angeles National Golf Club. That address is 9500 Foothill Blvd., Sunland. The program will get started at 6 p.m. and will include dinner.

On Thursday, September 7 members will take a tour with comment from tree experts at BrightView Tree Company Nursery in Fillmore. That address is 3200 W Telegraph Road, Fillmore. Arrive at 4:30 p.m.; tour begins at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

All CLCA members and friends from chapters in the region are invited to these special Educational Events, but you have to RSVP to [email protected] or Dan Dvorak (310) 480-7803 to reserve your spot. Cost to attend is $20 per person for each location.

Don’t miss out. Here’s where landscapers can learn “everything you ever wanted to know about trees and tree installation, but are afraid to ask.” Really.

Check your emails and the next issue of this newsletter for more details as they become available.

Weather’s Heating Up…Likewise CI Activities

I understand that there usually is a “summer lull” in the activities of most organizations.

With graduations, vacations and all, I can see how that can happen. Well, not at the Channel Islands Chapter. As a matter of fact, we have first class activities already scheduled throughout the summer and fall…with more to come. And you will not want to miss any of them.

First of all, you have to plan to attend BOTH BrightView Tree Company Educational

Events coming August 24 in Sunland and September 7 in Fillmore. The first will focus on Tree Preservation, Relocation and Installation. The second will feature a BrightView Tree Company

Nursery tour with comments from BrightView tree experts. This has to be one of the most unique and most informative educational efforts put on by any CLCA Chapter in recent memory.

The BrightView Tree Company Educational Events are being promoted regionally, so we expect good attendance from surrounding CLCA Chapters. Tell a friend and bring a friend. (See story on page 3).

We will also be participating in SFV’s Marketing Educational Event and Membership Night on September 28. Discussed by pros in the field will be standout company websites, reaching customers through social media, and more. There will also be a brief discus-sion about what’s going on at State HQ and what to expect at the November Convention November 15-18 in Scottsdale, AZ.

That brings us to our Third Annual CI Deep Sea Fishing Trip set for October 13. (This is a new date, so put it in your calendars now.) This was one of the most fun-filled activities your CI Chapter was involved in last year, and we are looking to make this year’s Fishing Trip even better. We are starting early to promote it here and to surrounding chapters, because WE ARE LOOKING FOR SPONSORS. Sponsors will help bring the cost down for our fishermen and women, and will provide our suppliers a unique and FUN way to reach landscape contractors from throughout the region with pre and post publicity of the event. There will also be opportunities to interact with attendees to and from the fishing grounds. (See page 11 for more information.)

Like I said, things are heating up around here, and it’s not just because of the weather. See you soon. – Dan

Ewing Irrigation Controller Recycling Program Expands Nationwide with Rachio and Blue Star Recyclers By Jennifer Klemmetson, Ewing Irrigation

Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply, Rachio and Blue Star Recyclers have expanded their irrigation controller recycling

program to all Ewing locations to encourage contractors to replace controllers with more efficient and fully-featured options.

By partnering with Rachio, Ewing is able to provide customers with another advantage: controller recycling for any type of controller. When replacing or upgrading to a new controller, simply bring the old unit in to any Ewing location. During the 6-month pilot program, 10 Ewing locations collected more than 400 pounds of controllers for recycling.

“With the success we had in the spring pilot program, we are excited to offer this opportunity to all of our customers,” said Warren Gorowitz, Ewing’s Vice President of Sustainability. “This program is one way of working toward a more sustainable future.”

When an old controller is replaced with a new one, it is often thrown away to sit in a landfill. Through this program, control-lers are sent to Blue Star Recyclers, based out of Denver, Colo., for recycling.

“Sustainability efforts benefit us all, and this program in particular keeps outdated controllers out of our landfills, while also providing jobs for individuals with autism or other disabilities – two great outcomes that require very little effort!” said Brian Ewing, Vice President of Sales at Rachio. “Rachio loves the way communities have embraced controller recycling, and are excited to expand the reach of this impactful program nationwide.”

Blue Star Recyclers, founded in 2009, recycles electronics and other materials, while creating jobs for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or physical limitations.

“This program means more controllers are recycled and more jobs are created for individuals at Blue Star Recyclers,” said Bill Morris, CEO of Blue Star Recyclers. “The community wins by keeping this material out of landfills. Our workforce wins by having meaningful employment and reduced dependence on taxpayer funded benefits. Everyone wins when those two things happen.”

To recycle old controllers, simply bring them to your local Ewing store.

Water Storage

Eight Foolproof Water Storage Tips By Richard Restuccia, Jain Irrigation

Interest in water storage is spiking for a couple of high profile groups. The first is the group of people who are preparing

for the end of the world and hoping for the best (better known as preppers) are interested in storing drinking water for long periods of time in case we lose access to clean water supplies. The other group is water conservationists interested in using alterna-tive sources of water for their landscapes and gardens. Below you will find storage tips pertaining to both groups as well as all of you who are interested in clean abundant water.

Drinking WaterThe FDA tells us bottled water is consid-ered to have an indefinite safety shelf life if it is produced in accordance with CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) and quality standard regulations and is stored in an unopened, properly sealed container. I notice that almost all bottles of water I see have an expiration date; manufacturers publish this date voluntarily. So, bottled water is a solution to long-term water storage for drinking in an emergency. If you are drinking bottled water on a daily basis you really need to read this article.

For those of us who have sworn off bottled water it’s important to know most scientists agree tap water has a shelf life of around six months. Zane Satterfield, an engineer scientist with the National Environmental Services Center at West Virginia University, explains, “The chlorine dissipates to the point that bacteria and algae start to grow.” That growth will speed up if you store your water in a warm or sunny spot – or in a glass container that hasn’t been thoroughly washed or sealed, he adds. Keeping water in an open glass will be okay for a few days, but remember each day the water is exposed to the elements is another day it can be introduced to contaminate. You should really keep in mind how often your hands come in contact with the rim of the glass and where those hands have been.

Before heading out to the store to buy bottled water or start filling bottles from your tap you may want to consider how much water you are going to need. After taking the 4 liters challenge last year I learned we need at least one gallon per person per day. If you have a big family that is a lot of water you are going to have to store.

Keeping contaminates out of your stored tap water is your biggest issue. 55 gallon water barrels are an excellent solution. They are made from food grade plastic, BPA free and UV resistant. They aren’t cheap; I have found them as low as $65 each. They have excellent caps you can secure to keep contaminates out. These barrels are an excellent alternative to bottled water, but you should keep them on a 6-month rotation.

Water for LandscapesA few years ago there was a very high profile resort installing water tanks to catch the rain runoff from the parking lot and parking structure. This water was used to water the landscape around the resort. When rain is falling you need very little if any supple-mental water so it is usually days before the water in the tanks was

used. Quickly there was a detectable odor coming from the tanks, something you did not want at a high profile resort.

The secret here again is keeping contaminates out of your water. Filtering water before it enters your rain barrel is a good idea. There are “first flush” devices you can add before your rain barrel

that diverts the first 5 to 10 gallons of water coming off your roof and does not allow it to enter your rain barrel. The water coming off your roof first contains a high percentage of contaminates.

It is important to clean your rain barrel regularly, which means at least at the end of the growing season and when you can during the summer. Also make sure to have a barrier to keep mosquitos out of the water. Your water will last a growing season and then you will mostly have to supplement the rain water with another source of water so long term storage will not be an issue.

Flushing the initial surge of water and using the water within a few weeks solved our problem at the resort and will solve most of your rain barrel landscape problems too. As far as drinking water you are going to have to determine how much of a reserve you need. Are your prepping for a three-day shortage from an earthquake or the apocalypse? No matter your reason for wanting to save and store water, now it’s time to make your appropriate choices.

Legislation Update

Federal and State Legislation News Briefs Affecting YOU• A glimpse of current or pending legislation that may affect your business.

Submitted by Mickey Strauss, SFV Legislation Chair and Past State President

Report: California Wage Increase Will Require Hike in 2018 Comp BenefitsCalifornia’s State Average Weekly wage rose more than 3.6 percent to $1,206.92 in the year ending March 31, which the California Workers’ Compensation Institute said will boost temporary total disability and permanent total disability rates for 2018 work injury claims and other workers’ comp benefits tied to SAWW increases.

Where Are Your Gas Tax Dollars Really Going?Senator Scott Wilk says that a significant portion is going to places unrelated to roads. He reminds us that the Legislature has passed a record setting $183 billion dollar state budget. And that every single ono of those dollars came from hard working, ordinary Californians. What has happened is that recently the Legislature siphoned away 30 percent of the new $52 billion gas tax for training of felons, bike lanes and a host of other non-road related projects in the budget. Senator Wilk voted no.

I-9 Inspections Dos and Don’tsIf ICE agents arrive at your business to conduct an I-9 document inspection, there are several things that you should know and do. Be aware that this is often the first step of a criminal investigation, so you should contact legal counsel immediately.

A detailed article explaining much of this is available from CLCA, and appeared in a CLCA In the News release. It mentions things like understanding your Constitutional rights, and knowing how many days’ notice ICE must give you depending on the type of inspection they plan to carry out. It also suggests that you contact

your attorney if the ICE agent is seeking to expand the investiga-tion beyond the scope of the warrant or subpoena. Call CLCA for details.

California Senate Passes Single-Payer Health CareCalifornia lawmakers approved a $400 billion-a-year program recently that would completely overhaul how Californians receive their health coverage by creating a single government-run, universal-care system for everyone in the state.

The state Senate approved the bill to create the Healthy California system 23-14, despite many lawmakers acknowledging that signifi-cant details remain unanswered, including how the state would pay for and provide care for its 39 million-plus residents. A legisla-tive analysis of the bill warned that the $400 billion-a-year cost estimates “are subject to enormous uncertainty.” A legislative analysis said that about $200 billion could be raised from a new 15 percent payroll tax.

SB562, by Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens (Los Angeles County), now heads to the Assembly, where it’s expected to face tough opposition.

Deception in Business

Lie to Me – The Final Chapter: Dishonesty & Power By Rich Gordon, Lindquist CPA

Having seen too many successful movie franchises, I do not want to push my luck any further – so this will be the last

entry in the “Lie to Me” trilogy.

In Parts 1 and 2, I addressed common traits of deceptive people and common methods of lying in the business world, respectively. In this final installment, we will consider the potential effects when those from Parts 1 and 2 graduate into the spotlight and rise through the ranks of corporate America.

It is obvious that as individuals advance in position with an organization, they acquire more responsibilities, more trust and more access to do some very serious damage – not only to the company, but to the economy and even the public’s confidence in the systems that are supposed to help prevent such large corporate and organizational frauds. Management and owners account for over 50% of reported fraud, but the median dollar loss created by those in higher positions is five to six times greater than by losses caused by those in subordinate roles. As for catastrophic damage perpetrated by power, I only need to type two words to make my point and spare you a history lesson: Enron and Madoff.

Harvard and Columbia Universities also find the topic of, and psychology behind, lying in business important enough to do research studies on the subject. One study’s experiments revealed that “low-power” individuals show the expected emotional and behavioral signs of deception; in contrast, powerful people demon-strated little to no evidence (emotionally, physiologically, behavior-ally) of lying. Power acted more as a buffer that seemed to allow

the powerful to lie significantly more easily and effectively. It seems that, while power does not lead to lying, dishonesty seems to come easier to those in power. Is there, perhaps, a correlation between climbing the corporate ladder and being able to conceal one’s true motivation? Once at the top, do those individuals then find it easier to abuse and misappropriate assets for their own motives?

Disturbing as well is the influence and impact on those learning from such “leaders,” because working for a deceitful boss can be dangerous territory. For those in that unfortunate situation, the “one-at-the-top” challenges everyone’s ethics and moral compass – and negatively influences those who will choose to follow the same path in a means to succeed or advance.

This is where whistle-blower policies, employee hotlines and boards of directors come into play. Employees need an outlet and safe haven to feel open and safe enough to report abuse occurring and being conducted by those that have power over them in the organi-zation.

I’ll finish my series on lies with a sobering example – which demon-strates that lying in business can ultimately result in the loss of not only dollars, but of human life, whether based upon efforts to avoid discipline or embarrassment, the pressures to perform, or just pure greed. During a congressional hearing in 1994 on the health risks of smoking, executives from the seven largest tobacco companies admitted that there “may be” some health risks to smoking, but denied that cigarettes were addictive or that they manipulated nicotine levels to make them more so. According to written testimony submitted at that time, the CEO of R.J. Reynolds stated “Cigarette smoking is no more ‘addictive’ than coffee, tea or Twinkies.” Lie to me.
