Football rivalry drives fans to art galleryFaculty, students, alumni and fans came out in droves to support WVU and

Marshall at the free public opening of the “Gallery Divided” art exhibit.

People of all ages showed their school spirit by dressing in the old gold

and blue or kelly green and white and casting their votes for their favorite

pieces. Exhibiting art faculty members from each school were on hand to

chat with visitors and share their artwork with guests from across the state

and around the community.

Prior to the reception, the artists mingled with members of the Chairman’s

Guild at a special reception at the home of Clay Center President and CEO

Thanks to the efforts of young gardeners

from Piedmont Elementary School and our After School Explorers Club,

the Clay Center has donated more than 300 pounds of food to Manna

Meal. Veggies like squash, peppers, lettuce, onions, potatoes and lots

of tomatoes grew throughout the summer. As we head into the

fall season, there’s still plenty “growing on” in our garden.

Approximately 150 guests dressed in jeans and boots celebrated summer in southern style at Backyard Bluegrass:

Mandolins & Mason Jars, the first Night at the Museum event presented by Friends of Clay Center.

The evening began in the art gallery as guests sampled Smooth Ambler Spirits’ White Whiskey and Old Scout Bourbon

as they voted for their favorite team and artist in the “Gallery Divided” exhibit and explored classic and contemporary

photography in “Artist to Icon” and “The Edge of Vision.”

The main event was planned for the Susan Runyan Maier Sculpture

Garden, but impending rain moved the party to the Maier Foundation

Performance Hall stage. This change of location didn’t seem to slow

down the night, as guests danced to live music from local band the Fort

Hillbillies, enjoyed handcrafted specialty cocktails from Smooth Ambler

and tasted southern bites like pulled pork on cornbread rounds and

fried green tomato bruschetta prepared by Embassy Suites.

Friends board member Tim Gibson said the first-time event was a huge

success.

Backyard Bluegrass was the kick-off to a new series of evening events for Friends of Clay, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome, everyone had a great time, and we can’t wait to plan the next one.

Friends of Clay is an active volunteer service and fundraising organization that supports

the education programs of the Clay Center through special events for its

members and the greater community. To become a member or add Friends
