Summer Residential Volunteer working to engage and educate members of the public on coastal maritime heathland importance and Auk species nesting on the high sea cliffs.

Extensive monitoring of the Chough, Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax, as part of Anglesey Reserves Ecology Chough Project.

SKILLS PROFILE

Collaboration and management skills enriched throughout my year at Slimbridge where working cohesively within a small team was essential. I coordinated and lead corporate work parties in addition to species surveys to ensure projects were undertaken efficiency and safely.

Strong analytical skills gained through research projects undertaken developing my use of Quantum GIS software, R programming language and Artemis genome annotation tool.

Effective communication skills developed through presenting to school parties and visiting public during wild swan feeds and teaching groups at Slimbridge. I have since presented my professional training year research findings to Cardiff Wildlife Trust.

Field skills developed during extensive and varied experience, most notably, species sensitive habitat management of Slimbirdge’s 800 acre SSSI and Ramsar wetland reserve on the Severn Estuary and nocturnal mist netting on the south coast of Portugal. At Slimbridge I conducted monitoring of avian migratory numbers and breeding behaviour; in additional to botanical surveys of species including Grass poly, Lythrum hyssopifolia, and Water Voles, Arvicola amphibious, across the site.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND INTERESTS

Species and Habitat Conservation: Weekly monitoring of moth populations at reed bed sites for Gloucestershire Butterfly and Moth Group. Gained Lantra awarding for tractor and brushcutter maintenance and operation, in addition to having a full clean UK driving licence.

Bird Ringing: Ringer for A Rocha Portugal and Cardiff University joint Storm Petrel project and at Abbotsbury swan round up; fitting metallic BTO and Darvic rings in addition to sexing, weighing and ageing over 40 individuals. Mist netting of passerines through summer 2015 as part of the BTO Constant Effort Sites Schemes and for public engagement through A Rocha Portugal.

Scuba Diving and Swimming: Have completed dives both within the UK and abroad, gaining my BSAC Ocean Diver certificate. Attended a field course to Tobago in Summer 2014 to examine the social interaction of Whitespotted filefish, Cantherhines macrocerus.

University Choir and Acapella: Elected as Raising and Giving Officer for the University Choir for 2014-15; through which I organised charity carol singing and concerts. I also have a distinction Grade 6 Musical Theatre and enjoy performing at part of an Acapella group.
